Because he's the nerd that got to beat the shit out of aliens and commandos.

What does Mario do?
Fail to get laid and step on overgrown mushrooms.

Not I, /b/. Things didn't go as planned though.
Ahhh, well I haven't followed /b/ like...ever, actually. Shame, that would've been a lot funnier.

Fanboys and people who can't accept that a character isn't great just because their game is fun. That is all.

So to review. /b/ loses, Mario loses, Freeman wins because Valve "bribed" people. Nevermind the fact that this shows Valve has a dedicated fanbase, this also shows people will be outraged about a company swinging votes on a website and yet not so much as put up one word of consternation when a company bribes another to make sure their new hi-def disc format wins. I am of course talking about Sony bribing Time-Warner. Which do you think would be more worthy of complaining about? Seriously people, learn to relax a little.

You have a point. But, I don't care, I just got 8 games for $21.99.
You must tell me how.

OT, that's bullshit. They specifically designed Gordon Freeman to have almost zero personality so that you can put yourself into that character. That does not make [b/]him[/b] a good character. It basically makes [b/]you[/b] the good character.

Lets see, the dicision was between an Italian plumber who does the same damn thing every game, or a mute who doesn't really have a personality...

Yeah, didn't vote, because both options sucked.

I really don't see how he won. Wait. Scratch that. Here are a couple of theories.

1. Being the very blank slate that he is, some players eventually feel as though they are indeed Gordon Freeman, and thus they are voting themselves the greatest hero in video games. After all, I'd much rather be led in battle by a relatively scrauny, inexperienced, nerdy 30-something scientist with fancy weapons than a snarky supersoldier built for warfare with fancy weapons.

2. He's a nerd, thus making him more relatable to the stereotypical gamer. In their minds, that automatically makes him better than the aforementioned supersoldier with the fantastic armor, in spite of the latter actually having a definite personality. It also makes him better than other heroes, apparently.

Of course, these are only a couple of theories, and I'm not assuming that either of these is true. I just consider them remote possibilities.

i agree, i dont think he belongs there. sure, his actions are great, but hes as bland as non space marines gets.

my personal choice for this award would probably be Soap MacTavish. he has characterization, and he actually saved the world from Zakhaev´s nuclear strike.

im not saying this as a COD4 fanboy, but think about it. he saves the bloody world, and survived the incredibly cruel ending.
/facepalm

I can't believe what you just said... you complained about a silent protagonist with no dialog going around and saving humanity and replaced him with a silent protagonist who relies on a squad of completely unmemorable and unlikable to go out and save the eastern coast of America from a crazy Russian.

You sir are a fanboy
/facepalm

And I can't believe what you just said, memorable characters eh, well captain price is for starters he has the epic sniping mission, you have gaz the sort of weapons expert he's memorable for starters he has the retarded time for you to beat in the training mission you also have an epic final mission with the mile high club.

I can understand the memorable characters from half life, but not many levels stick out in my head as outstanding or memorable.
I must disagree, while it's kind of cool for gaz's record and all that all they are happens to be back up with accents, there isn't a single piece of character development throughout anything, it doesn't mean that the game isn't one of my favorites games, because it is, but lets be realistic the game is set over a fairly small amount of time, all of which is in a combat situation, which makes it harder to establish character development or any universal back story

Call of Duty isn't better than half life, just better at different things than half life, for example, being a varied non stop adrenaline ride. But while the story was great, it never held me to the standards that half life has.

Which is funny because he's the only character who doesn't have any character. He never speaks and we know practically nothing about him. Even Master Chief has more personality than Gordon.

I think he won because he's basically the "you" character. Everyone wants to be the hero of a story and they do that through him.

People are still arguing over this?
That contest was a popularity contest pure and simple, nothing more, nothing less. It shouldn't have been named "Which is the greatest video game hero", it should have been "Which is your favorite video game hero".

Reading some of the comments earlier on gamespot, bashing each other over the heroes backstory and such was pretty pathetic, and the hypocrisy of some of the stuff was somewhat hilarious. Like for example when mario fans were bashing Gordon for having no personality. Or the Link fans bashing Gordon for not talking.

As someone on the Gamespot forums said. "If this was about which one that is most powerful or has the deepest backstory, The Nameless One should probably have won by default. But he went out in the first round."

And yes, I voted Gordon, and while he might have beaten Link without that Steam message (They did not promise any discounts on it, it was a cool surprise when I saw that, even though I own all the HL games), I think he would have had troubles beating Mario.

It also surprised me how so many people over there had never heard about Freeman before. I saw quite a few people saying that they should test out the HL games, since seeing as he has such a huge following the games had to be pretty good at least. These people seemed to be some of the most reasonable people there, and I tip my hat off to them.

As long as Master Chief didn't win, I'm happy enough.

I would, however, like to see why Dr. Freeman won.

I mean you could vote for a badass with a gravity gun or some crazy italian that can't even keep track of the princess long enough not to lose her every 10 minutes. My vote goes to the badass that the best video games ever released on the PC centered around.

I think he is over rated for a video game protagonist. Alyx is a far more interesting character then Gorden.

Personally I would have voted for dog.
