I tried approaching the GG discussion with a relatively neutral perspective and got slammed by my friend. I'm just curious about any kind of discussion this could bring.

You don't show us your original post. Is there a reason for that? If your not a misogynist, then don't worry about it. Though I can see why someone would assume you would a misogynist if you associated with GG. Fair or not GG has reputation for being a venting platform for people who have problems with women.

Edit: Also no one called you a misogynist. They called you a sucker who was duped by misogynists.

You know where they're talking about people involved in GamerGate being called misogynists?

All of the other GamerGate threads. XD

That's even worse. They're assuming he lacks the capacity to think and make decisions on his own accord.

Yeah. It's funny the antiGamerGate people seam to be the ones pushing people to the GamerGate side. But I do get why it happens. When people think they are fighting on the side of good, tolerance, knowledge whatever, they tend to dehumanize the "other." And make no mistake both, I hesitate to use the term sides, are doing this.

Well you jumped in the deep end with a shark spoiling for a fight... did you seriously think this would end without injury?
There is really no more to say, you can never expect an emotional person to act rationally, emotions trump rational with humans absolutely every time.

Not at all. Smart people are just as capable as being duped as stupid people. As for the OP, your friends seem like they care about you man. If they really thought you were a misogynist (and cared), I think their tone would have either come across much angrier, or they would have cut you off altogether.

It's definitely a two way street since you mentioned that both sides are doing this. Just like some elements of the Anti-GG side are pushing people into being Pro-GG, there are elements of the Pro-GG side who are pushing people into being Anti-GG.

At least, that was the case with me where I was encountering some very unpleasant Pro-GG people who were gradually pushing me towards the Anti "side". At that point I took a bit of a break from the Escapist and the whole GG affair since I prefer to be neutral.

You have like a giant thread dedicated to this stuff, this literally is nothing but I'm sad cause a friend wasn't nice to me. Why does this need it's own post?

"You're too ignorant to function" doesn't sound like what a friend genuinely worried about another friend would say. Instead, it sounds more like "if that's who you want to join, you and me, we're done".

I mean, assuming it doesn't just continue as an openly-abusive relationship where one friend can't tolerate the other.

Who said that? I just reread the whole image, I don't see that quote.

edit: Ah, it was in the opening post. The comment wasn't made directly at him, that was a general statement made before the conversation even started. Way to be dishonest about that. I stand by my original statement.

Okay, look... can we just stop this?

I'm not talking about Gamergate of course. I mean, I'd be all chuffed if we did stop talking about it, but I know that's not going to happen until the new shiny comes around to distract people. I'm talking about screen caps. Can we please stop holding up page after page of screen shots as documentation of an exchange?

Text is a marvelous invention, you see. Text re-formats itself to fit on my screen. I can control the size of text in my browser window to create the viewing environment I prefer. Text can be copied, pasted, and quoted to enable us to actually discuss what's being said meaningfully. Text can be sent through translation services so that people who aren't completely fluent in our language can still understand what's being written. And text can be directly pasted into this page so I don't have to go somewhere else and download someone else's file to see what the hell everyone's talking about.

What purpose does a photo file of another person's argument serve? Ever since photoshop existed, it's not like it's any less possible to falsify a screen cap than it is to falsify text. So why can't we have these discussions in text? Text is wonderful. Text is beautiful. Text is what built human civilization. You think sir Isaac Newton made his models of physics by prt scring the great thinkers that came before him? No! He wrote words! Words are wonderful! Don't be afraid of them!
yeah... but what if formatting is important?
Hmm... perhaps a compromise, everything should be a searchable PDF with embedded LATeX source. *nods sagely*
:3

I also don't like screenshots to be honest. I can't easily quote it, it takes up too much space and bandwith and unless there is some visual odity that is paramount to the discussion it doesn't actually add much...
Well, other than ancillary context I suppose.
And it is a bit easier than having to Copy Paste the whole thing, then reformat it to look good as plaintext...

How does one "associate" with GG? From what I have seen, it is an event that happened and started lots of debates, arguments, threats and violence, not a movement or organisation to be joined or opposed.

This is exactly why I without my opinion on the whole GG thing. And why I keep away from threads/etc discussing it. Nothing good is coming out of this...ahem "movement". Name calling, threats, flame wars, etc on both sides. How is this useful? =/

If there was a proper discussion about gaming media, the industry and sexism in games I'd be all for it. But not GamerGate.

And this is why I don't discuss Gamergate with friends. I am still very afraid of their responses.

Guilt By Ascoition is the most powerful debate win/bypass button and many are eager to spam it, like a quick, unblockable attack in a fighting game
Though in my opinion it says more about the person making the assertion than their target. The sort of tactics both side have been using to "debate" is the primary reason I've been sitting this out for the most part.
