First of all, the cake and the portals aren't characters.

Secondly, if you include them, that brings the total to 32.

They're just "goodies", extra references they had put in to make it more interesting, like the red balloon (that Ethan bought Jason in the beginning of Heavy Rain, for those who didn't catch the reference there).

well.. i didnt know about the balloon but the portals and the cake i knew just wanted to let ppl know they were there, also some have been thinking about the little ball next to Master Chief on the table to maybe be a pokemon ball
