I picked up Gotham City Imposters during this weekend's Steam sale and I'm finding the game almost unplayable. Long wait times in matchmaking, server instability resulting in game-breaking lag and frequent disconnects, horrible ping, etc.

I'll grant that some of this is probably due to the fact I'm playing from Australia, but it seems to be a common thread on the game's forums as well.

It's a shame, because when it works it's a lot of fun - a goofy, pick up and play arcadey FPS - and at $7.50 I can't complain too much, but still I can't help but feel a little miffed.

Anybody with similar issues have suggested workarounds? Or am I just the unluckiest guy in Gotham City?

Have you played it since the big patch they did? It's supposed to have fixed all the matchmaking and server issues they've been having.

I believe so. I only got the game yesterday and I'm pretty sure they haven't patched it overnight. Tried playing this morning and it was still terrible.

Well, this isn't the first time I've heard of the being broken as all hell. Not really sure of specifics since I haven't played it. But you certainly aren't the only one from what I hear.

Might be some odd problems on your end?
Personally it has been really smooth on my end and I can finally enjoy it with proper fov and not get sick.
Matchmaking length depends on which one you're trying to play, team death match for me is instant almost every time, but for fumigation and psychic warfare it is like 2 or so minutes...which is just because no one is playing them.
Ping/Lag/etc might be an issue on your end.

I'm open to the possibility it could be on my end. I had a hell of a time getting Battlefield 3 up and running, which requires me to disable UPnP and SSDP, and turn off network discovery, all of which I discovered through reading other people's workarounds. And yeah, ping is always gonna be an issue playing from Aus. I don't think I ever got decent bars in MW2, you just learn to deal. ;)

So I'm quite willing to try stuff to make it go, but I'm concerned because the consensus so far seems to be it's just a bit messy for some people. Hopefully the influx of people from the sale weekend will either (a)cause the discovery of player-side tweaks or (b)prompt patches/fixes from the developers.

I'm trying to play it and I keep waiting for ages to find any other players - its like the servers are barren.

Even on deathmatch.

I played the demo and thought it was awful so it doesn't surprise me that the full game is bad too.

yeah, I'm going to have to go with the popular opinion here and say that it's most likely something about where you're at. I picked the game up a few days ago and I haven't had any problems at all. I heard a lot of reports that the game was absolutely unplayable before the huge patch though, so I waited until it was patched to pick it up.

Having a great time with it, infact, it's an awesome game. I hope you're able to get it running so that you can experience it yourself.

and so that I can put a bullet of justice into your villainous skull *cough* I mean... um...

Yeah.

I believe it's because you are playing on PC. I hear it has a shit match-making service.

This is probably the only game where I find the console version to be superior.

I'm having no problems on the PS3. It's too much fun. :3

Yeah, TDM is bad enough, I've only tried the other game modes a couple of times - to no avail.

Heh, I'd be okay with that. I don't mind being outplayed by someone, I just hate being beaten due to things beyond my control, like lag and unstable servers.

And I agree, the game seemed like a lot of fun the couple matches I had that were half decent. But its 5% fun, 95% frustration at the moment for me.

Glad you're liking it, but I still wouldn't be able to play on PS3. I'm no PC elitist, I just can't do shooters on console. I simply cannot aim with a gamepad: has to be mouse and keyboard.

Its fun. When I finally get to play it.

First, it took an insanely long time to download and install.

Then, I had to sign up for a new GFWL account because it wouldn't accept my old one.

Then, I had to sign up for a Warner Brothers account for no apparent reason... isn't my steam account, AND my GFWL account, enough already?

Then, every time I load it up, I have to wait for both those accounts to load and for it to check for updates.. when Steam updates it automatically.

Then, I have to wait for that matchmaking system to throw me into a game.

There's no windowed mode, so I can't easily do anything else outside of that :/

But its fun when I play it....

It may be just a PC problem. I haven't heard of consoles having the same issues.

Seems to be a trend nowadays. I recently picked up Star Wars: The Old Republic, and it was insane the amount of hoops I had to jump through to get into the game.

But yeah, three different accounts (Steam, GFWL and Warner Bros) before you can get a game is pretty silly.

For MMOs, I kinda get it, especially considering most of the hoops for SWTOR were account security things.

But I'd rather like it if, when I buy a game through a secure service like Steam or Origin, for it to just use that login system >.<

Same, I spread out my games across PC and xbox. Anything FPS (especially multiplayer) goes on the PC. I hates the controller.

Try following the steps here: http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Gotham_City_Impostors

The biggest change which helped my FPS was running the Impostors.exe outside of Steam. Apparently the Steam overlay adds a lot of overhead. Went from stuttering to playable for me (on a laptop with a 6630M).

Secondly, for matchmaking problems, I have read that opening certain Xbox ports will help: http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Gotham_City_Impostors#Matchmaking_Issues

Thanks, will try. As much as it pains me to admit, it's getting to the point where I'll put the game down and not come back. Hopefully this will help.

Actually, I play the game on PC and haven't had any problems at all. I can vouch for the fact that it's not PC that's the issue. Check my profile if you don't believe me, I wouldn't have spent 9 hours being frustrated with a game on steam.

Bought it after watching TotalBiscuit's video.Horrible matchmaking, constant stuttering and fps drops.I can run Battlefield 3 on High, but can't play this awful joke of a port.Played it once though, and it was so much fun.Would buy it on PS3, but it is absent in russian psn.Can anyone suggest similar games(PS3/PC) besides obvious ones like TF2 and such?
