GOTY Contenders... Arkham City ignorance.

Does anyone actually care about this Game of the Year nonsense? It's not like the Academy Awards, where there's one universally recognized award system; everybody and their mother has a crappy little ad-filled award show, and they're all equally pointless.

This, until game industry agrees on one game of the year award (with possible multiple categories), any game of the year tag a game might have has as much meaning as individual movie critics opinion, if even that.

There were alot of really good games,but honestly I don't see how Skyrim won't take every possible rewards for the next future.

I don't really care about GOTY. I'll have my own personal favourite games, but everyone's opinions and tastes are massively varied. For example, Skyrim or MW3 will probably be this year's GOTY in many game magazines / websites, but I couldn't really care less about them. Sure I'll get them, when they fall victim to a Steam sale, but Saints Row the Third, Portal 2, Gears of War 3 and SW: The Old Republic are the only games this year I will pay full price for.

In short: GOTY is a useless concept because people are different.

Does anyone actually care about "Game of the Year" editions anymore? To me it just seems like a crap excuse to make a shiny metal "collectors edition" case and sell more copies the game. Does it even mean anthing anymore? Lots of games get GOTY editions, despite the fact that they didn't win any (or won few) Game of The Year awards, like Fallout New Vegas.

Official awards are stupid. The industry uses them as shameless PR, the fans use them to force their opinions on others. Worthless.

If Arkham City is anything like Arkham Asylum, I couldn't care less for it.

Zelda is Nintendo, so everyone thinks it's casual, and nobody really asked for a sequel to Batman, so I guess that's why? I dunno. Plus, SKYRIM AFUHGKSDUFK SO GOOD.

When it was announced everyone was like "noooo, it's going to ruin Asylum! Why would you do this Rocksteady?! Betrayal! BETRAYAL!"
So I guess not everyone was like that, just the vocal minority, which, sadly enough are the ones that everybody listens to.

OT: Arkham City isn't out for PC yet, so there goes a large chunk of the opinions on it, especially here since many Escapists are PC gamers, as for the rest of us more hate threads appear than love threads, and not many people have a strong enough issue with the game to make a thread about it

Meh, I'm sure Skyrim will win every GOTY award this year, which is pretty pointless...there's no universal "scale," no one rates GOTY the same. Besides, as pwn as Skyrim is, I'd rather hole up for a week with the new Zelda game, which looks very promising. I really didn't like Twilight Princess, and I figured the new one would be no different, but it really looks like a true step forward.

Didn't play Arkham Asylum. Won't play Arkham City. Doesn't interest me, so I can't comment on its quality, and many Escapists haven't had the chance to play yet; many of them seem to be PC gamers, and Arkham City isn't released there yet, so that might be why they haven't been talking much about it. I'm sure there'll be much bitching when B:AC releases on PC.

That's because there's someone on the internet complaining about everything at any given time. Name your favorite movie. Then go on the forums on IMDB and watch how many people are talking about how your favorite movie sucks and is overrated. This works for ANY MOVIE. But even if you have a bunch of people talking on a forum about how the Godfather wasn't that great, the vast majority of the people who've watched it think it's exceptional.

I don't know where you saw people complaining about a sequel to Batman but it's actually kind of hilarious how in the minority they were. Another example, if you went by the forums on this site you would think that Call of Duty MW3 would be a complete financial failure because "everyone hates it". This is the game that broke the single day sales record.

Oh no, when it comes to 'crunch' time, Arkham City will be up there... just wasn't as hyped or as popular, also isn't terrible enough to garner hate.

Neither is Modern Warfare 3, but that hasn't stopped the legion of "OMG CANCER KILLING GAMING!" sheep.

well AC isn't out on pc yet...and most "vocal" people on escapist are die hard pc only people.


and for skyward sword? no offense but it requires the use of the stupid wii controls, so i am going to give it a pass...until i am very very dry in my backlog of games (which won't be possible with TOR coming out...)

Now with SR3 on the horizon, I think its time for a serious discussion.

One thing I've noticed is that there are tons of Skyrim threads, and MW3 hate threads, but no one is mentioning Arkham City. Obviously SR3 is speculation only so we can't bring that into the fold... yet. But still, from all accounts Arkham City has scored well in reviews (which means jack shit to most people) and is supposed to be a solid game so why is there no love/hate toward Batman?
Also another one that may miss the GOTY contention... Skyward Sword. I've heard nothing about this game on this site which is supposed to be full of Zeldites.
So why no Batman:AC/Skyward Sword threads? Why is it just Skyrim love, MW3 hate? Are you folks that 1 dimensional?

because its been out for nearly a month already, and isn't nearly as big a deal as Skyrim. Understand that TES fans have been waiting for this game for 5 years. There's a lot of pent up excitement.

Regarding skyward sword, you aren't going to see a lot about it because its a Wii game. Most escapists don't have Wiis. I'm really happy that skyward sword is apparently as good as it is, but i don't have a Wii so i won't be playing it. I want to but i'm not about to go spend 200+ dollars just to play 1 game.
