Alright let's see what we can come up with...first off let's get the obligatory Sandman and Watchmen recommendations out the way. Some other suggestions:

Hack/Slash (5x Omnibus volumes)
Lazarus (2x volumes)
Ravine (2x volumes)
Aphrodite IX (2x volumes; recent version)
Echo (1x large volume)
Empowered (9x volumes)
Scarlet (1x volume)

That last one is one that I don't recall having seen mentioned in these sorts of topics and I feel like it's a decent book that was very, very zeitgeist-y with its premise and I'm kind of interested in what others think about it and have been generally kind of disappointed that its second volume has been repeatedly delayed. For reference its premise is basically "What if 'Occupy Wallstreet' had evolved into a violent rebellion?" so if that's not your thing then definitely skip it (obviously I stand behind my other recommendations) but otherwise I'd be interested to hear what another human being thinks about it.
Aphrodite 9 is worth it? How so? I saw some promise from the new Cyberforce series.

Tell me more about this...Lazurus.

I used to read Hack/Slash...until my mother got her hands on it. It can suck sometime to get the print version of comic you want and like, only for someone else to get it, see inappropriate stuff inside, and that's all they see. It's why I'm kind of glad I can't get an English translation of the Franken Fran manga. She'll see the cover and get upset. Which also sucks, because despite what the covers show, it's not a pron manga, it's a Horror Anthology series. And a dang good one, too.

Wow, Image has really turned around since the 90's, haven't they? Chew, Five Weapons, Revival, Cyberforce, Danger Squad, Rise of the Magi, the list goes on.

Solvemedia: "Love You" ...You too.

Powers. Screw the rules. Powers both is and isn't about superheros. Its about the homicide decitives that have to deal with the death and other consquences of people with superpowers. Its an amazing. Its funny, dark, has a great story, great art and the dialogue is extremely snappy. Say what you will about Bendis that man knows how to write great dialogue.
Agreed, Powers is an enjoyable comic. I stopped reading it several years ago, but it was really fun.

Alice in Sunderland: its sorta a novel slash documentary, describing the history of a surprisingly interesting city.
Red Son: What if Superman was a Soviet, and our only hope was a genius called Lex Luthor?
Corto Maltese: Tin Tin for grown ups, about a globe trotting sailor who fights, shags and recites poetry through the early 20th Century.

Note that strictly speaking, none of these are really graphic novels, but also strictly speaking, I hate how people try to distinguish their big-boy-grown-up-comics from normal comics.

Planetary has an omnibus, and two Absolutes - not that you'll actually find first one anywhere for reasonable price. It has the typical Ellis protagonist as in smokes, snarky etc and is overall metacommentary on comics and the like for 20th century.

Branching from Sandman, Lucifer reprint was recently completed with fifth book. Yahweh hires Lucifer for one job, which leads to some serious changes to Creation's nature.
