My favorite comic series is definitely Fables with Maus being a close second. The first is a fun series with good characterization and the second is just a brilliant telling of World War 2.

Kingdom Come by Mark Waid and Alex Ross was awesome in terms of style, story and characterisation.

Also the five 'Batman No Mans Land'serials was great for complete look into the Batman's universe.
