i like good graphics in a game, it makes in more intresting and fun.
i just thought id stress my one issue i have with good graphics:
its stopping me from enjoying the classics, i feel partly ashamed of this... since i love playing the old marios most 64 games and things like deus ex. but since the recent sudden improvments (bioshock crysis to name some) ive enjoyed the visual experince so much that when i go back to play games i know i love and have replayed many a time, i cant. i know i would be able to seeing as i still played them alot before these recent advances. they have stoped me from appreciating older games, i will play deus ex and after 30 mins have to stop because its just so hard to enjoy the whole way through noticing how bad it all looks. its shallow of me i know but i cant get round it, others must have experinced it im not asking for solutions or anything as i know there just personal issues to myself and its merley my perception, i just thought id try and start a debate about it.

lastly id just like to add this hasent made me hate good graphic based games as there still great to me (i havent stoped with crysis especialy with the editor)

I would like to see some industry out there that could retro fit old school games that fix the bugs and improve the graphics. Wouldnt be a bad place for new graphically clever programmers to get a foothold.

Some of the older game stories are awesome, Fallout for example. if the interface for that was cleaned up, some more sexy graphics going on it would be the 'new classic'. How many prettied up versions of Pacman are out there...

Perhaps i dont know enough about the sophistication of retro fitting a retro game. what do you blokes reckon?

heh it's an interesting phenomenon. graphically, some games age well, some don't.

some games that aged REALLY well, imo: x-com, super mario bros, street fighter 2. all those games still look really, really good to me. i guess one thing these all have in common is great 2D pixel art.

as you mentioned, Deus Ex didn't age so well. it looks pretty silly to me now. why is this? i dunno.

is it something to do with 3D? that polygons don't age as well as pixels? maybe...what about DOOM 1/2? or wolfenstein? hard to say..cuz i still enjoy doom, but i play using one of the source ports (that upgrades the graphics quite a bit).

just to add to discussion..it may also have something to do with modern displays. PS2 games look HORRIBLE on an HDTV, imo. and playing an old DOS game fullscreened, on a 19" monitor just makes the pixels even blockier. luckily, things like DOSBox let you play them in a window, and i think this helps.

so..i've no answers..but hey, if the industry figures it out..maybe they could make quite a bit of money updating old games!

Like stevesan says, some games age well (graphics wise) and some don't.

I think it comes down to the quality of the artwork. That's as true for bump-mapped volumetric nurbs surfaces as it is for pixel art. Good artwork will still be good artwork, even if soft particles and cool shaders can put a wow-factor on the mediocre. Compare Super Mario 3 on the NES and DinoHunters (Source engine). Lovely 8bit art to horrible 3D art with particles and glow.

About modern displays ... I dunno, I agree when it comes to digital flat panel displays, but playing Battle Mode from Super Mario Allstars projected on a wall is awesome!

As a PS2 owner, I am no stranger to craptacular graphics. However, if I had let bad graphics annoy me, I wouldn't have been able to play such great games as Psychonauts, Battlefront, Timesplitters 2, Destroy All Humans 2...the list goes on. Graphics are a nice addition, but they don't mean everything to me.
