Invader Zim is one of my favorite cartoons ever created. It was dark, twisted, and provided hillarious social satire. However, it was bogged down by the network it aired on, Nickelodeon. Nick was aimed at kids aged 2 to 14, Invader Zim was more made for the 15+ crowd. And when Nick began marketing the show at the usual Nicktoons demographic (children ages 6-11), Invader Zim was doomed from the start. The show wasn't really for kids, but Nickelodeon got Jhonen to make it anyway dispite not reading Jhonen's previous work.

However, we may be seeing a simmilar event happening, Disney's Gravity Falls. I like this show, it's dark, twisted, smart, and hillarious. But I'm starting to question whether it's really a kids show or not. The show gets away with death, murder, teen partying, hallucinogens, and money related crime that I'm supprised it's even on Disney Channel. Plus, if you haven't noticed, Disney barely even airs the show if at all, its time slot is sparatic, and there's very little advertising for it. So how is Disney Channel the wrong place for Gravity Falls. Simple, Disney Channel targets (and panders to) little girls (5 to 10) with its laugh track filled pre-teen sitcoms filled with unrealistic teenage life and horrible jokes. These are simplistic shows that pander to 9 year old girls. Gravity Falls isn't one of them, It's dark, sophisticated, has real continuity, and has smart, and often edgy humor. So this means that a show that feels more suted for teenagers is on a channel whos target audience won't really get half the jokes. Did Disney realize what they were getting into when they picked up a show from one of the writers of Flapjack?

Gravity Falls would feel more at home if it was on Cartoon Network, or MTV, or hell maybe even The Hub. And with season two promissing to be darker, and have more development on the secondary characters, it may just be enough for Disney to cancel the show. And I would be pissed if that happened. I think Disney should just move the show to Disney XD if it's going to get too mature for the ANT Farm crowd. So, do you feel GF is the Invader Zim of Disney Channel?

Every network gets at least one edgy cartoon, mainly so it can be used as a draw for the next edgy cartoon
. What you should look out for is whether or not wander over yonder and the Mickey minis can help produce the next Phineas and Ferb.

Besides, shows like that cater to a more digital audience.

Haven't and won't be seeing Gravity Falls any time soon but I'm glad something similar to IZ is playing these days.

Didn't one of the episodes of IZ inspire some guy to harvest organs? At least, that's what he said in court.

What would you say is/was Cartoon Network's edgy cartoon? Courage the Cowardly Dog?

I'd say Billy and Mandy, it borrowed a lot of the insanity and mean-spirited humor from Invader Zim IMO.

TDI had a censorship of tits joke, reg show has soda being carried around like six packs, and adventure time literally showed a cookie attempt suicide. Take your pick

Gravity Falls I would say, isn't as wild as Zim. Heck it's not even as wild as CN's Amazing World of Gumball.

On that show, they tend to use internet terms. Butthurt showed up once in a show, said by the main character. One of the most prominently shown teachers, is a baboon with extremely saggy breasts (complete with jiggle physics).

and they say "curse word". Yep, instead of cursing they just say the phrase "curse word".

Honestly, I feel that Gravity Falls is Disney's answer to Adventure Time.

Gravity Falls isn't as twisted as Invader Zim. And shows with dark content and continuity really aren't that uncommon these days. Adventure Time, Regular Show, Steven Universe, Dan VS...Okay, so I guess most of Nickeolodeon and Disney's cartoons tend to skew younger.

I've heard that the writers have plans for 3 seasons. Since Invader Zim didn't start laying the seeds for it's own long term stories until late in the show, I wouldn't be as worried about it not being allowed to finish it's run.

Wait, when since there was murder in Gravity Fall? I know there was a death with those two eldering store owner couple unless that short with that sideway guy count toward the murder?

Anyway, no Gravity Falls is nowhere near dark compared to Invader Zim and it isn't scary at all. Beside Gravity Fall still got some charms for the kids mainly Mable antics.

I know Gravity Falls isn't as dark as IZ, but since we're talking about Disney here, it's pretty edgy. In fact, one of the reasons one of their old live action shows So Weird was butchered and canceled in it's 3rd season was that it was getting too dark for Disney's standards. I wouldn't be supprised if the same happens to Gravity Falls soon, unless it's moved to Disney XD as the shows on that network are slightly edgier than Disney Channel.
