I was just browsing when I bumped into the people of Intoxicate, an indie developer who hopes to ship their first game in November. Since that timeslot is already taken by roughly the rest of the gaming universe, they decided to pre-sell their first game, Afterfall insanity, for just one dollar.

If they don't sell 10 million copies, all money will go to charity. If they do, 10% will be donated and the game will permanently be sold for 1.

Here's their site where you can get a better explanation (in Polish accented English):
www.afterfall-universe.com

I already ordered I'd like to know from my fellow escapees: Do you tink this might become a new business model for developers or will this just be a one time stunt?

BTW: I already bought 4...

Edit: Some people got the wrong idea of the pre-order. I blame their Polish-ish-English for that. You pre-order for 1$. If they don't reach 10 million, you still receive the game for 1$. I pre-ordered and I already paid. They can't raise the price on any condition, that would be misinformation and/or unintentional gambling which they can be sued for. Or I might've gotten that wrong, but oh well, it's just 1$.

They believed that I am 1337 years old? hmm...
Also, I have no idea what that game is, but I just can't say no to a dollar.

i couldn't find it, but does it say what the game will cost if they don't get 10 million?

I want to get 4-5 pre orders...but i don't want to if it'll end up costing me 180 dollars down the line.

No, I don't think it says how much it'll cost, but I'm fairly certain that they're not going to force you to buy every copy you preordered. If all else fails and they only let buy all 5 preordered games at the same time, you can just buy the game without the preorder.

Hmm...so it's a gamble. You give them a dollar, and hope enough people do the same so that they give you a game. If not enough people do then you either have to pay them another $34 for the game, or you just lose the dollar you already gave them. Either way they come out ahead because many of the people who will give them $1 are people who wouldn't have bought the game regardless, and therefore they're getting more money than they would have had they just sold the game outright at the discounted price of $34.

Huh, from an economic standpoint this is actually a brilliant business strategy. They know that most people won't miss just a dollar, and therefore will be willing to gamble on the outcome. They also know that something like this will get the word out on their game through word of mouth even better than actually making a good game.

I really have to give props to these guys, this is some great market strategy.

Down the line, if they don't get the 10 million orders the game will cost $35 dollars (it'll cost $35 normally, and $34 is the discounted price, since you would have already given them the first dollar). To buy the game with the discounted price they'll email you a code for each preorder that you have, which you will be able to apply at checkout when you buy the game to get a dollar off.

Basically if you preorder and they don't get the 10 million copies you aren't obligated to actually buy the game afterward, you'll just lose the dollar you spent on the preorder (or in your case, the 4 or 5 dollars you spent).
