The title really explains it all here, what are some really great horror movies that you've seen. Things that really get in you and make you afraid. My personal favorite is The Descent; great atmosphere and some decent character development (for a scary movie).

So, Escapists, what is your favorite horror movie... and why?

'Let the Right One In' is a great film.
'XTRO' is also an excellent film.

i would add 'IT' there as well, its just kind of a fun film, sort of freaky, Tim Curry is awesome in it.

I prefer the old ones, y'know the ones that most people rave about (with good reason): The exorcist, The Omen, Texas chainsaw massacre, Dracula (Christopher Lee ftw!) and the House of wax (the Vincent Price version) are the ones that come to mind. Others that I watch fairly often are It, 30 Days of night, Saw, the Ring and the Grudge (Japanese versions)

There are a couple of horrors that have stuck with me.

Arachnophobia: I was always slightly afraid of spiders before this movie but now I'm full-blown Arachnophobic.
Perfect Blue: This movie shook me to the core. It sits proudly in my top 10 favourites of all time.
Jurassic Park: Not quite a horror but truly a scary flick (and book). Especially if watched when young.

I really enjoyed "In the Mouth of Madness" One of Carpenters best in my opinion.
"The Thing"
"The Omen" (original one)
Some of the Japanese horror movies are right creepy too.

Definitely the Evil Dead movies, particularly Evil Dead 2. The Exorcist is always good. Paranormal Activity was pretty creepy. The original slasher genre movies like the first Halloween, Friday the 13th, and Nightmare on Elm Street movies were pretty good, even if they weren't always very scary and they spawned countless crap sequels.

The Japanese Ring Trilogy, Dark Water and the Grudge. British films 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later are also pretty good, but I don't know if you'd call them horror. Korean film Hanzel and Gretel is pretty good, but its more psychological than horror. I personally like the Haunting.

When I was younger I really liked 'House on Haunted Hill', but I watched it again rescently and realised it was full naked women for absolutle no reason. Sadako proved you can be a scary ***** and keep your clothes on.

I'ma big fan of "Evil dead 2". God what a great film
As if my avatar isn't enough of a clue, this. Definately the best of the series.

Also, The Shining was very scary the first time I saw it. Not so much the next few times, but still a great film.

+1 to Jurassic Park

I'm 23 and still have nightmares about those stupid dinosaurs.
