I agree it's popular, but it's not mainstream.

now please no flaming about "HALO RULZ AND blah blah blah" because I will dismiss you as a fanboy
Well, isn't that nice? Dismissing people as fanboys while dissing the games they like for no adequate reason.

OT: I don't think F1 2010 is particularly mainstream.

If it is, however... eh... Stranglehold is really fun.

And that one.
Agreed

and a good argument I'll put up with, it's that "HALO RULZ AND-" that I won't deal with, if you get offended by my opinion that you make a bland statement and don't back it up with anything other then trolling me because I said the over-hyped space marine isn't as good as you say he is... then yes you are a fanboy
See, the thing is, what you're saying isn't backed up by any information either. You tell people that their opinions are wrong and that yours are facts. YOU are trolling but then plugging your ears going "LALALALALALA!"

Frankly, I'm sick of people saying everything that's mainstream is bad. It's mainstream for a reason. If you don't like it, that's great, but don't say everyone is an idiot because they do.

I'm far from a Halo fanboy, and I've never even played Black Ops or Minecraft, but just because I defend a game because I don't think it's trash doesn't make me bias. They're opinions. EVERYONE IS BIAS.

Anyways, as far as mainstream goes (definition-wise), I'd probably say Mirror's Edge. That game never got too popular, though it has been awhile sense it came out. I'm sort of obsessed with it though.

Warcraft 3. No, seriously, a lot of you still don't even know about it.
Sad but true. I must have sunk four hundred hours into that game. More recently, I'd say Mount and Blade Warband and Escape From Butcher Bay.

No idea if Homeworld counts, but I'd like it to do.

Homeworld. Best game ever. I personally think it's a tragedy that it isn't mainstream. I've already ranted about Starcraft unfairly stealing its spotlight.

As an aside:

You honestly expect to get flamed by raving Halo/CoD fans on this site? Mate, this place is an unholy pit of seething hatred directed towards those two games, as well as Final Fantasy. Minecraft fans on the other hand, you may have a problem with.

As an aside, do you just hate games because they're mainstream or is it a coincidence that you find the more mainstream games don't appeal to you?

(And seriously, get Homeworld, I've nagged enough now.)

Gunman Chronicles, The Thief games, The Penumbra trilogy (made by frictional games also famous for making Amnesia) and a quite odd game called Pathologic which got probably one of the best stories ever seen in a video game sadly ruined by it´s poor translation. Oh and you have to import Pathologic from Europe or Russia.

I'm not sure I appreciate how aggressive and judgmental the opening post is, personally. Beyond that, I like the idea so...

I've been pretty caught up in a handful of cult classics, so these are games I recommend heartily despite an unhealthy lack of mainstream knowledge. Without thinking, Earthbound, Shenmue, and Jet Grind Radio all spring to mind. The fact that two of those are on the Dreamcast should probably say something about me.

Beyond that, I've always been a fan of the odd RPG. Grandia and Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete round out my Playstation far better than Final Fantasy VII and IX did, and certainly gave me more variety of gameplay elements. While on the topic of RPG titles, Breath of Fire series has nothing but good titles.

Past those, I could heartily recommend Rogue Galaxy for the PS2. Custom Robo, Chaos Field, Eternal Darkness, and Beyond Good and Evil for the Gamecube. Cave Story, Worms Reloaded, and Plain Sight for the PC. Even though it's popular enough to classify, I feel like Psychonauts is another honorable mention.

I could sit here and do this all day, but there are easily hundreds of games worth mentioning that aren't exactly "mainstream." If anything, I just say check out reviews, look around, and stop being so aggressive with your opinions.

Just because you disagree doesn't mean you have to be rude to everyone who likes things in the mainstream.

Yeah, Homeworld was great. Cataclysm was a bit weird, but it still was an interesting twist. I was kinda disappointed by HW2 tho. I think it's hard to retrieve that atmosphere of fighting your way through a shitstorm because you want to go home if now the scenario is to defend what you have. I heard the Homeworld licenses changed owner back to Relic couple of years ago, but I haven't heard of a HW3 and sorta doubt it. Too bad.
I also loved about the game how much backstory you were able to find when digging through the manuals, both in the strictly story-related chapters and when looking around the ship descriptions. Every ship model has an entire little history attached to them and it's actually not just some extra they came up with after the game was finished. In Cataclysm for example, the description for the Sentinels said that they use women because they're smaller and there isn't a lot of room in the little ship, so guess what, Sentinels always had female voiceactors.
It's little stuff like that that always brought alive a universe for me.

Not mainstream? I'll leave out the contested Minecraft and take a look down my games collection. Alien Hominid, Trauma Centre (the first DS one before the series became more well known), Penumbra and Gish are about the only games I can see that probably wouldn't be classed as mainstream. Maybe Shonen Jump Ultimate Stars, but that's only unknown here because it was a Japanese only title.

I'm gonna agree to disagree on this one. Wikipedia isn't a credible source in my view.

Back on topic however, the Gothic series.

*gasp* someone who knows Fallout 3 wasn't the first!

Just wondering, what about Fallout 2 did you like the best?
I liked Fallout 1 better personaly, but Fallout 2, I LOVED getting the Car.
Mmmm let's see. Probably the freedom of the game. I mean you can do what the hell you want. You can do the towns in any order you like, you can do quests in any order you like, you can skip towns if you damn well please, there is always more than one way to solve a quest(Well, most of the time), The game actually rewards you for choosing good dialog(high int and speech) and punishes you for bad ones. I also love the car, but mostly because I'm such a hoarder that I needed the trunk for all my excess ammo, guns and random stuff :)
Also, the humor in the game is excellent and the story is pretty good as well. The npc's are also funny as hell. Especially Sulik and Myron.

Myron: I feel like I've passed an arbitrary experience point limit and gained more power.

Chosen one: Keep close to me.
Myron: Eh... all right. You ain't hitting on me, are you?

I also downloaded a patch that added some content that was removed from the original game (The abbey, Another military facility + another area of the Den with more quest options and some other stuff) which gave the game a cool new breeze even though I had played it many times before.

Now as for the original Fallout, it might just be because I played Fallout 2 before I tried Fallout so maybe that's the reason why I think it's better. I don't know, I just liked Fallout 2 much better I guess.
