In your opinion what is the greatest guitar solo you have ever heard on a CD or LIVE.
My personal favorite is a tie between Avenged Sevenfold's "Afterlife" and "Dancing Dead". They are really freakin good at sweep picking and I think that's what makes their solos wonderful to listen to.

I know this sounds geeky, but Devil Came Down to Georgia's solo is just freaking insane

Are you talking about the Charlie Daniel's Band or The guy that re-did it for guitar hero. Because if so, then yeah, that solo is nuts.

I can't believe you guys haven't even given Lynyrd Skynyrd's Freebird a mention. And this is very early on in the discussion.

Personally Megadeth Solos are always brilliant as is Chuck Schuldiner's. And I happen to like Slayer solos even though they're just a random assortment of notes.

As much as I love them shreddy metal solos, I'm gonna have to say that I prefer the slower more melodic solos. Something like good old Blue öyster Cult just can't be beat. Really heavy bands like In Flames or Carcass have some awesome solos too.

Bleh, there are just too many to list xD

Besides the obvious ones (Iron Maiden, Ozzy Osbourne songs, Freebird) I have to say that the guitar solo on "Take it on the Run" by REO Speedwagon is simple, but nearly impossible to not air guitar to.

Almost all the ones in the Avenged Sevenfold songs, they just rock...
Especially in "Afterlife".
If you listen for all the solos in all their songs, they're freakin insane. I'm not exactly sure about this, but I listened to one of their not-really-that-famous songs and the solo was crazier than Painkiller's solos... Too bad Avenged Sevenfold is underrated. :/

Children of Bodom and Machine Head have some wicked ones too. I tried to play the solo for "Halo" by Machine Head and just gave up on the first part. It's too fast and hard to keep up with.
