Pretty sure this thread will have appeared somewhere along the line but i've never personally seen one so i thought i'd throw it out there.

If you had to pick one guitarist who has above anyone else either defined their person genre or you simply believe them to be the best of all, Who would it be?.

Personally i could never define one epitomised guitarist to beat the rest but my choices are.

Rock: Angus Young
Metal : Dimebag Darrell Abbott
Punk: Steve Jones
Instrumental: Jason Becker
Shredder: Jason Becker
All Time Award: Jimi Hendrix

i'd love to hear all your opinions!

Eddie Van Halen. However, if Jimi Hendrix had lived longer he'd probably take my top spot.

One pops up every other week (just like almost all topics,) usually with the two worst tags on them: 'Ever' or Of 'All Time.'

As it stands, you'll probably get quite a few repeats for Hendrix.

I'd kind of already seen it coming dude.. But no matter what anyone else says, i'll always see Dimebag Darrell as the best, he's the reason i picked up a guitar.

Really? That made me laugh pretty hard.

I do agree though, too hard to pick one.

Jeff Lang, Antoine Dufour, Buckethead, Paul Gilbert, Les Claypool (Bassists count too!). I'm sure there are tons I've missed there as well, but thats a random smattering.

If I were to list it like yours by genre, I'd say...

Rock: Jimi Hendrix
Metal: Randy Rhodes
Punk: Mick Jones
Jazz: Wes Montgomery
Classical: Andres Segovia
All Time: Jeff Beck
Personal Favorite: Pete Townshend

I Always mess up what i say.. its a curse.

And gotta say damn great list there, Les Claypool is easily my favourite bassist ever (Redneck Skills!) And as for Paul Gilbert and Buckethead, They're two simply amazing guitarists, because no matter how damn fast they can play, They'll always make a slow soulful song or two as well.

And now i shall go listen to Soothsayer by Buckethead, thank you good sir.

Well if we're talking about the best then I'm obliged to say Jimi Hendrix. I see little competition there. But to be a little more subjective, well, my personal favourites would probably be either David Gilmour or Axel Rudi Pell.

Tough. Andres Segovia was really good, but he mainly learned from the methods of Fernando Sor, which means he could have easily been even better. Jose Feliciano is awesome, along with Paco de Lucia.

We could all point out the ones that shaped the way modern guitar is played, as in Jimi Hendrix, EVH, etc.

These threads are all the same though, so it doesn't matter.

1. Syn ain't bad... but so so difficult to take seriously
2. I Can never ever listen to his music after he butchered Pantera's Walk.
