For me personally John McGeoch, the greatest post-punk/new wave guitarist at least :)

Wonderful player, not too flashy and very inventive. His work with Magazine,Siouxsie and the Banshees and Public Image Limited is brilliant. Rather underrated and sorely missed. RIP

Couple of other personal favourites are Robert Smith and Bernard Sumner. In no way at all virtuosos and again their playing is neither flashy nor over complicated but just right for the songs they wrote. and Smiths sense of melody and various guitar tones over the years are brilliant.

Going back further I would say Buddy Holly. Achieved so much in such a short amount of time and had a lovely tone. :)

Edit: Some other personal faves I missed. Porl Thompson,Keith Levene, Mick Ronson, Steve Jones, Scott Gorham, Brian Robertson, BB King and of course Jimi Hendrix :)

Just for the sake of not repeateing names:
Mattias IA Eklundh, Frank Zappa and Bumblefoot. I just love them to death. If you have the time just check them out, your brain will probably fry with at least one of them. Although Zappa is more of a composer than a guitar player but still he is my favorite musician of all time.

Noone's vouching for Stevie Ray Vaughn? I'd have to pick him for the sheer skill he possesses. It's like he has a million fingers XD

Him, Eric Clapton, Bert Jansch or John Scofield.

Yeah, if only they made a quartet.

Actually, no, that's just retarded.

1. Syn ain't bad... but so so difficult to take seriously
2. I Can never ever listen to his music after he butchered Pantera's Walk.
I wonder how many levels of 'No' there can possibly be. A7X is a band that high school kids think is all awesome and metal because they've never heard people who actually ARE awesome and metal.

As for the OP mentioning Dimebag... ugh.

Tony Iommi > All. Honourable mention to Glenn Tipton and KK Downing as the best dual guitar pairing ever.

Urrrrrgh. I dunno. D:

David Gilmour, Joe Satriani, Janick Gers (his sweep-picking is awesome, seriously), Mike Amott/Bill Steer, Dino Cazares (for style, not technicality) and that's all I can think of.

Dude... I Could agree with most things said on this thread but this ain't one, Dimebag will always be a great innovator of metal, he wasn't the fastest, most technical or even the best. But the sheer passsion behind that texan man's riffs cannot be described, before you pick out a guitarist to "ugh" about , think of another , because if you hear the passion behind his playing, you don't deserve to have ears.

Check out the outro to Floods - The Great Southern Trendkill Album.
or
the intro to Cemetary Gates - Cowboys from Hell Outro

and as for the talk about Syn Gates... i agree, he could do so many better things with his playing than Avenged.

and a few names mentioned:
Chuck Berry: Legend
Kirk Hammett: Amazing band/Not that amazing guitarist.
Janick Gers: YES!
Satch: Gotta love the Surfing album.

Technically, probably Paul Gilbert or some other freakily good person that's still boring after a bit.

I don't really know otherwise. Slash always sounds awesome, but I guess it's too much the obvious answer. I think my favourite ever would be Peter Green (Fleetwood Mac). This is the guy who wrote Man Of The World, dammit!

Greatest guitarist ever?

I'd love to say Jimmy Page but in truth, he is pretty sloppy and he'd be the first to point out he isn't the best. Although he is responsible for some of the greatest moments in rock history, oh and that solo.

I always thought Hendrix was interesting and had some incredible ideas which really pushed forwards the way of the guitar, but his execution was horrible. Most live performances I've ever heard sound awful.

So I've got hand it to Stoke-on-Trent's finest export... Slash.

Slash isn't perfect but he rates very highly in the following areas: Originality, feel, speed, passion, technique, tone and hair. He is one of rock's most influential and recognisable figures. He's played with some of the biggest names in music, Michael Jackson, Les Paul, Paul McCartney etc etc... And he's one of the most down to earth people around. Writer of some of the most iconic riffs, member of one of rock n rolls biggest and most succesful acts. His ability to still play the guitar at any level of intoxication is nigh on impossible.

An honourable mention at this point goes to Jeff Beck who would be number one but he didn't write Appetite for Destruction...

"I am the greatest guitar player ever to have lived!" -Ziltoid the Omniscient

An alien with a scullet said this so I'll have to agree.
