In terms of being scared, I'm going to go with <url=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.318978-2-50-Reviews-Creep-2004>Creep. Probably the scariest film I can remember watching.

John Carpenter's "The Thing" is possibly the greatest horror movie of all time. Its very suspenseful and has the weirdest goddamn monsters Ive ever seen.
I'll agree, and add that beyond all the effects and cosmic horror, the paranoia and mistrust between the characters makes this film that much more real. And John Carpenter shows he's a master when he makes you laugh at someone's head coming off, but cringe at someone slicing their thumb.

Not quite up to The Thing's quality, bur almost as fun (and perhaps more imaginative) is Carpenter's In the Mouth of Madness. Based ostensibly on both the works of Lovecraft and the Phenomenon of King, it goes in directions you don't expect. Sometimes hokey but always fresh, it also boasts one of the most mind-blowing non-violent scares I've ever seen.
"Did I ever tell you my favorite color is blue?"
Other strong contenders:
Evil Dead 2,
Seven,
Dawn of the Dead,
Silence of the Lambs,
Angel Heart,
Alien,
Tremors,
& Quatermass & the Pit (or Five Million Years to Earth)
.

Haha! I love that picture XD

Anyway, I'm really into Japanese horror. And I've gotta say either Ringu or Ju-On for me. Something about Japanese girls with long hair in their face just creeps me out.

Guillermo del Toro's Call of Cthulhu which released in late 2010 and was so horrifying, it created a rip in the time-space continuum. The master print of the film was lost forever, as were all of it's copies, after having fallen into said rip in Space Time. Before the rip was sealed, Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi were seen for a moment as was Lon Chaney who clutched wildly at his throat. Before the rip closed completely, fire was seen and the only people who remember the event believe The Cthulhu Effect (as it is known) to be the true cause of the MGM vault fire of the early 60's.

Wouldn't that be something?

Greatest horror movie of all time though? I really couldn't say. My favorite is the first Nightmare on Elm Street but is it the best of all time? I couldn't say.
Son of a-

You almost got me with that. I was about to viciously search Amazon, and then I saw the wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff.

OT: I'll go with Alien, I remember seeing that when I was little and it scared the crap out of me. Sadly I haven't actually seen The Thing(yeah I know that's practically a crime).

Since I'm thoroughly surprised that no one else had mentioned this, I'm going to have to say that The Exorcist was the scariest movie of all time. What makes a movie scary to me isn't the 'unknown' factor or a monster being memorable, but the fact that some things can be very much realistic. Any movie like Exorcism of Emily Rose or Silence of the Lambs that presents the element of 'as farfetched as it is, it could happen' is scary simply because it can and has happened before. If you aren't quite sure of what I'm talking about, look up the name 'Anneliese Michel' and look at the bonus features for the Silence of the Lambs DVD and count the number of serial killers Thomas Harris fused to create his characters.

Friday the 13th(2009). It was incredible, and the first horror movie I really got into.
Second to it is eaither Return, Revenge, or Curse of Michael Myers. The story is just perfect.
You best be trolling, son.

Martyrs. That film stays with you for a long time.
Martyrs was amazing. Since you were a fan of it, check out Frontier(s) as well. It has an absolutely mesmerizing soundtrack.

In my not so humble opinion, The Exorcist is the greatest horror film of all time.

The original Nosferatu is my holy grail in horror movies. Love that film.
You sir, win a banana for your excellent answer. The original Nosferatu is not known as well as it should be, it is a masterpiece that doesn't seem to be very popular, though those who have seen it tend to agree it's excellent.

I guess it would either be Stephen King IT or The Shining. Actually The Poltergeist can be scary at times.

IT wasn't scary. Tim Curry was hilarious.

Probably the Shining, maybe 28 days later.

I was also scared out of my mind with Javier Bordaim's character, Anton Chigur, in No Country for Old Men and Kevin Spacey's character, Jon Doe, in Se7en. Those are my two favorite movies of all time, and even though they are not horror movies, I will promise you that they will haunt you for years to come.

The original Halloween is my personal favorite. My second favorite is The Devil's Rejects, damn that movie was intense.

The Exorcist. It's not scary in the modern sense that there's a shitload of mutilation, teenagers and masks. It paces itself and creates the horror gradually, it's fucking disturbing. The same could be said about The Shining, and more recently REC, all of them are good.

I don't know if it counts as a horror movie, but '28 days later' and '28 months later' scared the crap out of me. I think it was mostly the atmosphere, and the fact that it is technically possible.
You must be from the future! I personally loved 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later, but I've heard good things about the third installment.

OT - The Thing, The Shining, Alien Quadrilogy [small](yes, all four movies)[/small], Halloween, Psycho, Martyrs, The Mist, Dawn of the Dead, The Descent, The Exorcist, Audition, Let the Right One In.

I'm sure there are many, many more, but that's all that comes to mind for now.

Second to it is eaither Return, Revenge, or Curse of Michael Myers. The story is just perfect. They really go together, and take the first two into account, and ignore every other Halloween movie, and you have the perfect series.

A lot of the other Friday the 13ths could fit, too.
The fact that other horror movies call themselves slashers and claim to be like Halloween and Friday is an isult to the two film lines. Both are so much better then the so called slasher genre.
You best be trolling, son.
What? No, why? I know the AVGN doesn't like those movies, but I think they are the best.
Well then you're just wrong, eh. Friday the 13th 2009 was the biggest load of bollocks since Jason Goes to Hell, and all Halloweens after 3 were total shit.

Hey you can't say he's wrong, people have opinions. I didn't care much for the remake of Friday the 13th and I loved all the Halloween movies, except for 3, Resurrection, and the sequel to the remake.
