Greatest Movie You Didn't Like

What is the most revered piece of cinema you just didn't care for?

For me, it would have to be Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. It was revolutionary in it's day, the effects hold up surprisingly well even now and there's a lot of tension and atmosphere, but it failed to engage me beyond that. The movie lingers unbearably long on boring background events yet the main story (if it can be said to have one) feels surprisingly rushed.

Alien. People treat it like it's one of the gods of horror/sci-fi cinema, but it did nothing for me. I sat back in my chair and tried not to fall asleep during it.

Aside from dodging some horror movie cliches, it really didn't do much that was that great. The characters were unlikable, the acting was stiff, just mediocrity all around. I will say though that, considering when it was made, the special effects on the Alien are alright.

What shocked me was that the sequel turned that completely around and now that film ranks as one of the finest action movies I've seen.

You could practically hear the "hardcore" Star Wars fans dying painful deaths every time you watched an episode.

Goodfellas.

I could appreciate it was a well acted, technically brilliant film, but it bored me. I managed to watch it through, but by the end all I could think was, 'well I know what they were trying to do, but this didn't grab me.'

I've never understood why it's so loved, though to be fair I only saw it some years after its release, and after six years of watching Oz any prison movie was going to feel cosy and bland by comparison.

Titanic was kinda meh too...

Does Terminator 3 count? I mean the Terminator series was pretty big, and T3 was a massive steaming pile of fail.

Schindler's List.

I dislike how the main character is set up as basically a Greek god capable of wooing nearly any women, charming any Nazi, saving all those he comes across etc.

Then at the credits we see a totally different guy who couldn't keep any businesses nor his marriage afloat. I'd have loved to see a movie about that guy, a guy with actual flaws.

But the movie itself that guy seemed to have been replaced with a half-god. And it's not really amazing when a half-god achieves something incredible.

Edward Scissorhands. The birth of what I consider typical Tim Burton demi-goth Hot Topic merchandise wankery, like it rested on the laurels of just being weird. Everything he's "remade" or "rebooted" as well. Just him calling up Johnny Depp and grinding it through the demi-goth 25 dollar t-shirt machine...

Avatar.

While it seems redundant to bash this movie further (especially on the Internet), it really is a newer, shiner version of Pocahontas to me.

The Godfather.

Its an enjoyable film at best but all these people who hold it up as a cinematic masterpiece must be watching a different film to the one I have.

Agree with the bladerunner person too, good film but cant say I ever found it better than "average". The jaw dropping thing about that film was its vision and style.

Blade Runner.

Although I do like this film because of it's soundtrack, cinematography, special effects and atmosphere the story sucks major balls and the acting subpar in alot of areas which is a shame because there is some great script writing. The story seems very rushed and the "is Deckard human or not?" storyline barely exists (because of reasons and disagreements in development).

Pulp Fiction.

Sure, it had its moments but overall, I don't care much for it. It's just several, boring storylines. I won't die a sad man if I never watch this movie again.

Natural Born Killers

Can't believe I forgot this. I hated NBK, for much the same reason as you described. Thing is, I absolutely love American Psycho, a movie who's protagonist is even worse. The difference, I think, is that American Psycho doesn't expect you to like or sympathize with Bateman, whereas Natural Born Killers tries to paint Mickey and Mallory as the good guys.

Plus, Bateman's more entertaining to watch. M&M just irritate me.
