Critics love Tarantino because his movies are all homages to classic cinema, critics love classic movies
They aren't homages so much as just tactless "see what I did there?" pastiche.

I'll say Scott Pilgrim vs The World.

Sure, it's not exactly a "great" but considering the amount of positive gushing coming from the internet.....and one movie critic in particular, I figured it'd be pretty good.

Good lord was that movie absolute shite.

There are a lot of things in this thread I can agree with, there aren't many classical films I can say I absolutely dislike whereas everyone else loves.

I can at least see why there's a general positive consensus on certain movies or even find highly redeemable qualities on films I otherwise don't enjoy on their own, but respect in their own right. I seem to have more criticisms towards a lot of movies considered modern classics though like Scott Pilgrim, Christopher Nolan's films or Avatar (I don't think much needs to be said about the latter). I'll spoiler my explanations for these since I get a little ranty here.

Scott Pilgrim was well filmed but it felt too... "hipstery" for me to really like. Just tried a little too hard but it wasn't awful. I just don't get why so many geeky people cream themselves over it just because it references Zelda a few times.

As for Nolan, I think he's a great director and has some fantastic visions but he can sometimes get a bit too egotistical with his movies. Inception was something I really liked when I first saw it but I watched it again not long after and it just felt a bit too eager to show off how intelligent it was. That's not to say it's bad at all and even with that, I get why people love it but, like with Scott Pilgrim, it just tried too hard at times.

I honestly liked his earlier films better. The Prestige, Batman Begins and Memento were all fantastic. It was just at The Dark Knight that it started getting too serious and self masturbatory. Plus, it felt more like a crime movie than it did a Batman movie. The Dark Knight Rises though, was a huge improvement since it actually felt like you're watching Batman.

Okay, sorry for the wall o text there.

Avatar. I guess it was fun while I watched it the first time because of the effects but my lasting impression of that movie is that it was pretty bad.

I've been surfing the thread seeing if anyone shared any of my sentiments and I'd say I have to agree with most everyone here regarding Alien, Titanic, The Godfather, Blade Runner, Up, Avatar and Harry potter (The rest I haven't seen because they sound boring. And I see from this thread that I may have guessed correctly.) and I could definitely see why people disliked the ones I did enjoy, like the Lord of the Rings for being too long, Napoleon Dynamite for being too stupid, and Scott Pilgrim for being rushed and having all the character's arcs removed from the original story. However there is one movie that just didn't do it for me that's probably going to get me in trouble.

The Matrix Trilogy.

I almost fell asleep halfway through.I liked the first movie a little bit, but after that, I just found the whole thing hard too follow and rife with plot holes. I usually enjoy stories set in grim futures that combine philosophy with action, and I do appreciate the Matrix's story and influences form a technical viewpoint, but I just couldn't get into it. Maybe it was Keanu Reeves, I don't know.

Prisoner of Azkabam is often touted as the best one, I assume, because of its more creative take on the book as opposed to the almost point for point way the first two movies went about it, but I think they went a little too far. The later movies were better at striking a balance between sticking to the books and a more original take on the source material.

And like a lot of people, Blade Runner (I like the idea of it but I felt like the noir and the philosophical stuff were two separate halves, and the attempt to bring the two stories together was incredibly rushed), the Godfather, and I'm gonna have to add A Clockwork Orange. Everyone in the entire movie/book is an asshole. Every. Single. One.

Saving Private Ryan. I never liked any war movie, but I thought I would give this one a go since it was supposed to be amazing, but I couldn't even make it past 20 minutes or so. Just senseless violence and gore and explosion for ages and ages. I get that it was trying to set the mood for the piece, to demonstrate how senseless and brutal war really is, but did they really need to fill so much of the movie with it, right at the start no less? It didn't shock or disgust me or anything, it just bored me so much. It just goes on for so long before the plot even starts. The movie goes nowhere, right at a time where I'm supposed to be drawn in to everything. It just turned me right off.

I also agree with Edward Scissorhands. I didn't hate it, it was okay, but not what I was expecting. I thought it was going to be a dark and artistic film about a twisted abomination. Instead what I got was a tame pastel coloured 50s style sitcom with the only "dark" aspects as envisioned by a 10 year old. It was even tame by Burton's standards.

The Dark Knight.
Yes, and not just the movie, Heath Ledger's Joker too.
Hah, his joker was the only good part of the movie. It should have been called "Joker: The Movie About A Really Well-Acted Joker" featuring a cameo by Christian Bale giving a comedy performance of 'a batman'.

Hmm, maybe I watched one of those Sy-Fy Home movies that was like Sin City, either way I hated it.. I don't plan on watching the sin city 2 either.

But thank you for making me feel dumb.. I'm gonna go wait for GW2 to start up..

What is the most revered piece of cinema you just didn't care for?

For me, it would have to be Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. It was revolutionary in it's day, the effects hold up surprisingly well even now and there's a lot of tension and atmosphere, but it failed to engage me beyond that. The movie lingers unbearably long on boring background events yet the main story (if it can be said to have one) feels surprisingly rushed.
I hate 2001: A Space Odyssey. It's boring and incomprehensible. That description is also adequate for Prometheus.

The Blind Side, Marly and Me, The Hangover...Damn.

I also did not find Titanic any good, and I found the Dark knight good, but it was really kind of annoying. I didn't really find the Joker terrifying, and while I agree Heath Ledger was good in the role, and his death was a unmistakingly sad tragedy, his Joker to me didn't seem like a scary enough villion.

Avatar and Titanic definitely, James Cameron is overrated in general.
To be fair it's only in recent years that Cameron has become overrated. His earlier stuff is pretty good.Terminator 1&2,Aliens,The Abyss and True Lies are all enjoyable movies. In fact I would rank Terminator 2 and Aliens among my favourite movies.I agree about Titanic and Avatar though. Two of the most overrated pieces of crap I've ever watched

Titanic, yes let's take an event were hundreds of people died and turn it into a god awful love story
And not just any love story but the most clichéd story around(rich girl falls in love with poor guy.Defies family and other rich people to be with him).God I hate that movie with a passion

OT:Another vote for The Godfather here.Maybe it's because I have no real interest in mafia/gangster stuff in general(videogames being the exception)but I fail to see what's so great about it.I've even watched it start to finish 3 times now to see if it would grow on me and so far nope it hasn't

Didn't care for the Harry Potter films, especially 7 part 2. Considering how good the books were and how talented most of the adult cast were, I was surprised how much I hated them.

Probably for me, I'd say Inglorious Basterds.

I really can't think of any real problems with it. It's well acted, well written, well directed, and all fits quite nicely together, but for some reason, it just rubbed me up the wrong way.

Hmm...

Off the top of my head:
The Godfather
Goodfellas
Just about every Quentin Tarantino film ever
Every Paul Verhoven film ever
....

Oh wait. You said "greatest movies..."

Okay then. Change that list to just The Godfather. (as I don't see ANY of the others as great. In any regard.)

Don't get me wrong. I easily recognize the skill and talent both behind and within The Godfather. It was, in many ways, a "masterpiece" of film-making.

Still, I'm just not that fond of it. I can watch it and enjoy the occasional scene, but overall the film just doesn't do it for me.
