What's the story of Atlas again? I know he holds up the heavens as a punishment, but was that for stealing fire or something? Or was that Prometheus, now that I think about it.
Yeah, the fire was Prometheus... kinda. He loved humanity (he made them, Athena brought them to life) so he took the fire of the gods and gave it to the humans.

ANYWAY Atlas was punished just for fighting for the Titans. Not unreasonable, considering that he was, in fact, a Titan. Prometheus wasn't punished straight-up because he switched sides.

Atlas was one of the instigators of the Titans' uprising against the Olympians; when the revolt failed, Atlas was punished by Zeus to eternally hold up the sky on his shoulders (not actually the Earth as depicted in most instances).
Prometheus was the Titan who stole the fire of the gods and gave it to mankind and was therefor chained to a huge rock and sentenced to have his innards eaten out by a giant bird every day, healing magically over night. (Btw, he was also a brother of Atlas.)

That's it. Now I remember. Congrats on a totally awesome first post, by the way.

Umm... wasn't he... wasn't he the son of Posideon + bull? Or was it Zeus...

OT: Here goes my own question- What was the predicted cause of Ragnarok? How did you (the public) get into mythology?
If memory serves, the Fenriswolf breaking free of his prison is what starts Ragnarok. It's been a few months since I read the Prose Edda, but I think it goes basically like this:

1) Fenrir breaks free and swallows the sun + moon
2) The Midgard Serpent shows up and kills most of the Vanir
3) Thor kills the Serpent but dies from the poison shortly thereafter
4) Fenrir kills Odin and is killed shortly thereafter by Freja
5) The smoke clears and everybody but Brigid (I think that's the name, it started with a B I'm pretty sure at least) is dead

I don't know of any Brigid, but thanks.

How did you get into mythology?
I honestly don't remember how or when I got into mythology; it was definitely in my early childhood. My parents taught me how to read and write at age 4 and there were lots of books around the house, so I dove in. I also remember watching a few Ray Harryhausen moviesat age 6 or so and I was fascinated by the stories, characters and creatures, which further fuelled the fire.
Mind you, I'm not an expert on mythology, there are huge gaps in my knowledge because I only read about the stuff that sounded interesting to me.

Is there a bass god?

(for a better question: who was the god of music again)
EVERYONE, worships their own god of music. I think he is just one person who shapeshifted loads throughout time... Clearly he has been having time off since the 90's.
You must not have heard of Flea, he is the current bass god, undisputedly.

It's probably wrong. I'd look it up, but my copy of Prose Edda is in storage somewhere and I can't get to it. One or two of the Aesir live through Ragnarok though, I just can't remember the names.

Music was divided up, since it is such an important and encompassing thing.

However, if there WAS such thing as a god of music it would be divided amongst Dionysis and the Muses.
actually, I believe Dionysis was the god of wine and Apollo, while also the sun god, was also the patron of musicians

That may be a variation of it.
I recall the prize bull being white and actually being Zeus in disguise.

1) Ehh? probably..
2) Funny one, he made a bed for Aphrodite and when she laid down with Ares the bed transformed into a mini prison.
3) I dont really know. He is just the "ferryman"

You are confusing it with Europe's kidnapping myth.
Minoas- the king of Crete- was given a white bull by Poseidon in order to sacrifice it to him.Because he didnt want to sacrifice it Poseidon made Minoa's wife fell in love with the bull. Their offspring was Minotaur.

1: Yes the Cyclops who raised him.

2. He did know but didn't care.

3. Not really. He is just there.
XD Thanks for saving my thread. Hephaestus was raised by a cyclops? As in... one of the children of Poseidon, or... just... an unrelated one?

Why are Poseidon's children cyclops'? Is it explained?
Can't remember exactly (long time since I opened the dusty Tome that is my Greek Mythology notes) but if I remember correctly the Cyclops were one of the Titans that fought with Zeus on his side in the war against Chronos. They wound up working as the smiths to the gods on an Island (name escapes me) which is the island Hesphestus landed on when he fell from heaven. That fall is also the reason behind his physical appearance.

That's just the way he is. all his children are monstrosities.(as are Hephaistos's kids)
pity the woman that gave birth to 'em.
I believe it was a Naiad, by the way.

Not all of Poseidon's children were monsters, over half were human (in appearance at least). Of the "creature" variety Arion, the ultimate horse was always a favorite. As too was Pegasus (yes I like horses, why do you ask?), and his brother Chrysaor (a winged boar, beware the phrase "when pigs fly" when in Greece). These critter children kind of make up for his freak children like Charbydis, Polyphemus, and Sally Struthers.
okay, okay, but I still pity the woman that gave borth to something with hooves.

I find it funny that the characters in ancient mythology are so... deep. They're complex. Interesting.

WHY DOESN'T THIS HAPPEN ANYMOAR?
The Greeks, Romans and Egyptians were inventive. And cool.

Neither are true of the religions of today ( no offensive to religious ones, just all the mythologies were so much cooler.)

Does he know about Aphrodite's thing with Ares? Does he really mind?
*kicks down door waves classics as-level.*

Yes he knew, and he was very upset so he forged a net out of the same stuff zues thunderbolts are forged from. He then proceded to catch them in the act trap them then get all the other gods round to take the piss which they did.
Then Possidon told him to let them go as it was a horrible thing to do. He did so but only after possidon promised him a temple or something.

Search Festival of Dionysis, or Bacchant, in google.
