The lines themselves are okay. If they had actually damaged the lines, I'm sure this would have blown up more. Sorry for the first title.

Greenpeace in order to draw attention/protest, martched into the Nazca lines and set up flags and banners right next to the Humming Bird lines(or just the bird one that most people know). It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site and you need permission and special shoes to walk around them. Greenpeace didn't go through the channels, they just showed up and did their thing. Now the actual lines are okay, but well here's a picture showing what they did.

See given the properties of the soil(large amounts of limestone) has allowed the lines imprints to last this long. Thus the shoes worn around the lines are designed to not leave imprints. All the walking around and flag poles indentations are there right next to the lines for....however long it takes for them to go away. Granted the lines themselves have been around for 1500 years at least so Greenpeace's presence will be there for a long time.

Naturally, Peru is ticked and is pressing Greenpeace for names. Only carries a 6 year jail time though. Still, weird to see the message 'Energy is renewable' right next to things that aren't.

I'm pretty bad at starting topics like this but;

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2014/12/12/greenpeace-peru-nazca-lines/20318005/

Or just google Greenpeace and Nazca Lines. Escapists thoughts and opinions? Personally I feel this was really stupid of them and will blow up in their face even more as this story is carried.

I'm an environmentalist and I think these guys are idiots, just to put this clear. You always go through proper channels since an inept environmentalist does far more damage than someone who is just apathetic. I'm more for finding environmental solutions within the system by way of restoration projects, regulations and perhaps incentives, so these 'shock' moves seem completely unnecessary and even harmful.

I just hope that there won't be a big backlash, since these guys are to environmentalists what the PETA is to Animal rights.

The term "imbecilic" comes to mind. They probably could've done something similar by asking for permission, and now they've damaged their own mission- not to mention a priceless historical site.

Imagine what the reaction would be if, instead of Greenpeace, it were, say, Coca-Cola. People would be calling for the marketing department's heads- and not just the government of Peru, either. I say throw the book at 'em.

What a bunch of assholes.

It's one thing to do some kind of protest, it's another thing to risk a historical site like that just for the attention.

I hope EVERYONE involved is tossed into the darkest hole they can be.

So, what was the point of this action? I really don't get it. "Let's go fuck up a priceless piece of ancient human culture to spam a generic as hell message in really big letters." It's not even artistic or notable or interesting aside from the assholery of the actions themselves. It's just a generic as hell message in a generic as hell font. They could've just made a meme pic of that exact same thing and basically nobody could tell the difference, except for the lack of damage to the site itself. And why the fuck would they sign it? Are they actually proud of this stunt?

Huck 'em in a cell, fine the organization itself for approving this little adventure, and be done.

Doing crazy shit for your cause will just make your cause look crazy all together. Also they essentially just put their advert on someone's monument... now even fucking Walmart goes that far.

Not gonna lie, I read this as "Greenpeace Damages Nascar Lines" assuming they damaged the brake lines or something of a car. So I came into this thread going "WTF why are people so stupid you idiot dickheads banana boat" Then I read the OP. My thought process only got more angry.

Seriously, WTF greenpeace?! You damage something that simply cannot be replaced just to stick a couple of fancy letters on the ground around it?! All you have done is make people hate your cause for doing something stupid for no clear reason.

This was just after that "interruption protesting" thread, rather well timed it seems.

I can't even pretend to give a shit. Do I think they should have done it? No. But what about all the pristine, irreplaceable habitats and sacred heritage sites that have been completely destroyed and defiled by private companies? Are the oil tycoons going to jail? Of course not. But some dickheads do a bit of graffiti and suddenly everyone's up in arms. People just love to direct their outrage at the powerless, when the rich and powerful are doing the same thing on a massive scale, on a daily basis. I'll never understand such hypocrisy.

Big difference between "Nazca lines" in the headline and "or the area around them".

Actually it's quite the opposite; if you get angry with the despicable, exploitative shit pulled on a regular basis by the corporations and the powerful, you'd be a hypocrite if you didn't apply the same standards to Greenpeace just because they are committing their act of vandalism in service of "the cause" rather than base greed. It's a better motivation certainly, but in practical terms it doesn't excuse this kind of behaviour - spraypaint your message on some horrifying postmodern concrete & glass corporate penis-substitute HQ building? Yeah man, go for it, it's illegal but I would seriously struggle to give a shit; but causing damage to a UNESCO World Heritage site, particularly one of this significance? Eh, naw, that's no on.

Here's some truth for you. Activists are idiots. All they do is symbolic gestures that don't change anything. They're stupid. Their intentions are good, but they're stupid. If you thought that individual people are dumb, put them in a group and give them a common goal. That's a whole lot of stupid.

Same. From the images I've seen they damaged the area next to them? Although it's still bad and you could argue they damaged the artwork just as much you'd damage a painting by doodling on a part of the canvas that had nothing on it.

But I think that makes a difference in how easily it could be restored? I'm not seeing any reason why that couldn't be done, but it will take money and time. Make Greenpeace pay for that.

I'm not against publicity stunts on principle, even if they might break the law (but we're getting on a shaky ground whenever that happens, especially if it's by activists from other countries etc) but this is vandalism, plain and simple.

At a rally of theirs I thought them to be an environmental PETA. I am not a fan of PETA I think PETA is horrible and care more about shouting the message far more than the message being understood. This confirms I was correct.

For a bunch of nature expect, they poorly perform their stunt without pior knowledge of the area itself other than it's a forbidden area (did they think the lines were like that cos it was untouch for many years?).

Beside couldn't they photoshop the area to get their point across?

Greenpeace have been responsible for some pretty stupid shit in the past, thankfully only hurting their own dumb supporters.
But this kind of protest is just bloody wrong and someone should be locked up for it.
