So i have been playing the new RTS Game "Grey Goo" from Petroglyph recently and it's pretty good. Which is surprising, because before the release i haven't heard a single thing about this game. Seriously i don't know if i have just not been looking very well but there was nothing.
Considering there are basically no new RTS games out there that don't begin with S and end with tarcraft i find this quite surprising.

So i mainly wanted to make this thread to spread the love a little bit, i enjoy this game very much and i think a lot of rts-players would too.
So far i have just been playing the campaign and the quality is pretty excellent. They have very high quality cutscenes between missions, a pretty good story and interesting missions with varying objectives.
Additionally the game has tons of hotkeys implemented right from the start making the makro gameplay as comfortable and easy as possible.
There are three different factions, two of which play have some minor differences, but the third, the goo, plays itself very differently with no real basebuilding, although i only tried them in skirmish once and didn't do their campaign missions yet.
From a value standpoint, though i am not through with the campaign yet, comparing how much i allready played and how much i have yet to play i would say that the campaign would be about 10 hours, less if your really good at rts.
I haven't done multiplayer yet, but the factions seem to be very balanced and i think there is quite some fun to be had in multiplayer battles in the game.
So, yeah, aside from the just plain bad name, the game is pretty damn good, if you like rts game try it out!

I also got grey goo and I think it's fantastic. I would describe it as an RTS that has been boiled down to it's essentials there are no workers, only one resource, no supply depots, no unit abilities, only about 12 units per race but it all holds together so well, it's streamlining at it's very best. And absolutely best of all if you are like me and love RTS but shit at micro and APM stuff, this game has a perfect slow and defensive focus that you will love

I really like the name, at least it doesn't have the words "shadow", "rise", "guardian", or "fall" in the title or a dumb subtitle

Now that you say it, yeah it is pretty streamlined, but really in the best way possible.
It might be because it's been some time since i played an rts, but i didn't even really notice the lack of workers. The building just works so well and feels just right.
Since the units work very well in a rock, paper, scissors kindof way there's no complexity lost through the streamlining.

About the name:
It just doesn't sound that interesting. Nothing about the name itself suggest something about the game, besides one of the factions. It just doesn't really fit to a strategy game.

I watched Total Biscuit's WTF on the game, and have had a bit of a look at the official website, and while it may be a good RTS, it's not for me. For me, the lack of character is a deal breaker.

Yeah, I'm intrigued by it as well, and had never even heard of it till I saw an ad for it on Escapist.

Horrible name aside (seriously? That's the best they could come up with?) I definitely want to give it a shot at some point. I've been yearning for a good old-school RTS. I like StarCraft, but everyone in Multiplayer plays it at the fastest speed and it feels more like an arcade game than an RTS game to me.

Yeah, the names shit (though I heard it means something cool, but it still sounds like shit), and from what I've seen, it looks pretty average.

I wouldn't mind trying it out though. Is there a demo available?

I hadn't heard of it until I saw it on a few of my friends wishlists. Once I've worn down some of the other strategy games on my todo list, I'll have to give this one a crack.

Also, I think the name is fine. The name refers to a hypothetical end-of-the-world situation, where out of control self-replicating nanotechnology would consume all matter on earth. (link for those interested). [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grey_goo] It seems appropriate for the game, tbh.

I was actually looking at this like an hour ago.

How does it actually play? Is it system hungry? Are its lower settings a waste of time? (Can I play it on a weaker system?)

One major complaint I have about the game is that it's a bit poorly optimized, with framerate drops all over the place. Hell, the CUTSCENES have trouble maintaining a decent framerate. I've been able to work around that by switching back and forth between windowed and fullscreen, but the game definitely needs a patch for its somewhat poor optimization.

As for the game itself, it's solid. Not great, but still pretty good. Instead of the traditional 3-race split to expensive-but-powerful, cheap-weak-and-plentiful and somewhere-in-between, the factions are diversified more by their approach to base building. This is a nice change of pace, but the devs didn't follow through when it comes to the unit selection. In fact, the unit roster for the Humans and the Betans is pretty much the same, and the Goo has only some variety in that regard. That's pretty much the game's weakest point - lack of unit identity. The lack of active abilities adds to this. It's a macro oriented game, but the maps aren't all that big and fail to play to that strength. I also dislike having to decide which upgrades to get. It's not like the game has a ton of them. In general, it feels a bit bare-bones in the feature department...

Reading this post, it sounds like I hated the game, but I didn't. As I said, it's not a bad game, but I can't help but feel that most of the praise it's getting is mostly due the genre being a barren wasteland recently. And the campaign cutscenes are nice...

If you're into sci-fi, Grey Goo isn't that bad of a name. It's a bit silly to try to sell to a broader audience under that name, but this is an RTS that doesn't end in -craft, niches are what they are looking for.

When I get in the mood for an RTS, I'll probably look it up.
