Its only okay if its really really funny. There really has not been a play session of battlefield for me when c4 didnt end up in a helicopter.

Because there's no rules about new stuff until someone makes one?

Anyways, I think if you do something mean once and it gets a laugh, fine, but it's usually the repetition of the act that makes it unfunny and unacceptable.

i usually don't have a problem with griefing as I would just leave the game and join a new one. Generally though I actually find it funny, even if it is being done with the intention of ruining my experience. That fades though if it happens too often though.

Griefing is a form of bullying, bullying is not OK, so neither is griefing, see?
Bullying is only bad in real life or where it can physically or mentally harm you. Yeah, cyberbullying is somewhere there too. But griefing is different. Your character is not you. You will not commit suicide or get seriously physically or mentally hurt just because someone killed your "awesum elf huntard named leggolas, lolz". Well, if you do, that only shows that you have some medical problems you should consult a doctor for.

There is nothing wrong with survival for the strongest system. It disrupts the way society works, so it's unacceptable in real life. But online, where it's ultimately disconnected from real life, real life laws or consequences, why not? The weaker one dies, or gets better.

Griefing is fine. As long as it doesn't cross a certain line. Using hacks for the sake of griefing is wrong, but then again using hacks for any profit is wrong in my eyes. Griefing people in real life is wrong, for the most part. But strictly online? Sure, griefing is fine.

And I'm a really friendly person, too. But it doesn't mean that I shouldn't gather up some new made friends in an online game or specifically an MMO of your choice and go on a hunt. It gets amusing, even. When life threats and whine, lacking proper grammar and punctuation, start pouring in from those people... mmmmm, sweet.
Nice analysis there, Freud, but that doesn't change the fact that it's fucking annoying and it pisses people off.
Also, by your logic, trolling on the Escapist would be Ok, are you really saying that it's okay to grief a site you've made 1000 posts on and enjoy using? By that logic, griefing a friend is ok.

Or killing someone in an MMO when they are killing a rare monster, a few seconds before they actually score the kill over and over again.
mate, seriously. thats harsh. that is the kinda thing that makes people think that online games are cunts. if your gonna grief people then why not do it in real life. go out into the street and piss off random strangers. because thats essentially what your doing. just because you cant see the other person doesn't make it ok
Actualy thats another thing.. but in a whole notha thread.

RANDOM STORY ALERT!

While i was playing Flyff, I used to join partys with high level players, and then i would hover around while they would fight higher leveled monsters to gain fast experience. Sometimes they did not notice, and i was able to gain several levels before they realized what was happening.

But seriously, if you ever played that game, i guarentee you would do the same, its an absolute ***** to level.

I feel as if its ok for me to grief, but when im playing for real, it realy pisses me off when someone does it to me. Its a Win/Lose situation.
No offense meant, but that makes you sound like a little *****. "It's okay for me to do it, but if someone does it to me, they're a jackass."
That's some bullshit, right there. If you think it's okay for you to do it, you'd better realize you deserve it when it happens to you.
That was the intended reaction. I'm simply untouchable.

Why do it, it's really not funny. I don't do it and I have fun playin the game, but thats just me. Other people seem to get a kick out of being bastards online, but I say if they wanna do it thats fine, just do it FAR away from me, I don't have the tolerace for it
Those are my sentiments exactly.

Damn. I fell for it.
Now you need to die.
Fine, i'll go crawl into the conventional oven. Happy?

I play TF2 and L4D. I'm positively ENCOURAGED to grief. TF2 earns you "domination" for killing the same person 5 times, and there's an ACHIEVEMENT for making someone ragequit.

TF2, you spend versus trying to screw up the opponent's game via rushes, wipeouts and quick skirmish attacks.

Griefing is essentially poisoning the well. You think you can behave like a fucktwat in anonymity and have fun at the expense of others - however, by this you are turning the multiplayer for any given game in the stinking cesspool it is in many instances. So people (usually the nice ones) will start to turn off and go play something else, new players won't join and you are stuck playing with the same breed of even worse fucktwats day in and day out. Congratulations.

There's a lot of different kinds of griefing.

If the game developers design a game with griefing in mind (e.g. EVE) then yeah it's OK.

If the game has bugs that can be exploited and people exploit those bugs to win then that's the developer's fault. In this instance people should be complaining to the developers, not the griefers.

If the game works as intended and people intentionally sabotage their teams just to see the reactions they get, well... did any of you grow up with siblings? Remember what happened when your kid brother or sister got bored? They'd find some way to annoy you just to see what you'd do, of course. This sort of griefer either didn't have any siblings (and is only now discovering the "joy" of annoying people for the hell of it) or they did but, for whatever reason, they just haven't grown out of it yet.

Recently I found a bug in an MP game which could be exploited, so I recorded a video of the exploit to post on the official forums so that the devs would hopefully fix the problem. The bug allowed me to turn invisible and "wtfpwn" everyone, and I admit that for the first five minutes I was laughing out loud at the way people were spinning around trying to see where the hell they were getting shot from. I killed one guy by throwing a grenade in his face, which was hysterical because I knew that from his point of view that grenade must have appeared out of thin air. But I have to say that the amusement was very short lived. Within ten minutes I was bored and wishing I could just be rid of the bug (which unfortunately had a tendency to happen whether I wanted it to or not) so I could go back to playing normally. So yeah, I can see the funny side of griefing, but I do wonder at the mental age of anyone who finds it funny for more than a few minutes.

Sometimes hacking is injected into griefing, makeing it all the more volitile.

My favorite was the good ol CS namespoofer. I would inject realy annoying sounds into my mic port and spoof the name of another player. Hilarity ensues.

First, everyone would be like "SHUT THE PHUK UP NAO!". I would not stop, so obviosuly they kicked the person i spoofed, and when he rejoined, oh boi theeere waz sum phun timez there.

Yesss sirreeee reee bob. It did get boreing after awhile so i had to change it up a bit, and then when i was done, DIE OF BORDOM. So then i just started to edit wiki, which is far more entertaining.
