First let me just apologize, I know there must be a lot of these sort of threads here. But the jury has been out on this particular "this or that" among my friends who usually have definitive answers which has always left me wondering. Who would win, a full grown female grizzly bear defending her young (height of aggression) or a hungry male African lion? The terrain would be neutral, lets call it a simple arena.

Well male lions typically don't hunt, so while they're still dangerous they're not going to have much experience. IMO a tiger would be a better challenger.
In either case though, bears are typically the most dangerous thing around and don't get messed with very often. On the other hand both tigers and lions live around other animals that can kill them and would probably have had more experience dealing with a situation like this.

Well for on thing it just isn't likely to occur, not because they don't live in the same regions but because neither animal would want to take on such a challenge.

That being said I would have to say the bear. Having stood on the other side of a wall from a nearly adult kodiak bear I really have an appreciation for their immense size and strength. Also all that fur and fat acts as very effective protection.

But seriously, those animals are the size of a small car.

Im pretty sure the bear would win. Isn't there a bunch of tests/simulations/historical evidence that proves this?

um, i still put my money behind the bear, but you have no idea what your talking about, a male lions life is about 2 things, fucking and fighting, they often fight other males for there pride, so experience, male lion is not built to hunt, its built to fight, and it fights well

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2kOmTjbFM0&feature=related

pack of females chased off, one male lion walks in hyenas chased off.

best part is, the male lion knows how to beet them fast, goes right for the queen of the pack bam rest are oh shit, male lion vs huge pack of hyenas, male lion wins, pack of females hyenas win

p.s. quote, unconcern for food, his main drive is to kill.

Male lions dont usually hunt unless they're older and thus out of the pack or younger and not yet in a pack. Generally if they're in a pack, they dont hunt.

So you have any one of three lions:

a) the more experienced but aged and more feeble lion
b) the less experienced but younger generally more fit lion
c) the varied level of experience and age lion that is sick or injured and thus lost his pride support.

Looking at the bear, it gets the treatment of being raised by mom, and fighting all its life for its own food after mom says get the hell away from me. So at any age (within reason) it has the experience to use it.

Looking at age, it stands:

bear: generally lives to be 30 years old (average, good conditions).
lion: 15 years (in the wild, where it would get the best "training" for this fight).

So alraedy the bear can live to be twice as old as the lion and still in prime state.

Grizzlies also have a more balanced diet, do I have to give the bear the nod for that.

Then you have size. Now, since we're talking a bout a female grizzly, its somewhat hindered, and its protecting its cubs, so its mind will be divided. but we'll go with it (though itd be better and more fair to say a male on male fight):

bear: can be over 5 ft standing, 3'5 on all fours, 6'6 long, 440 lbs.
Lion: 4 ft tall, 5'9 long, 550 lbs (average)

So while the lion is heavier, the grizzly is taller standing, and with a powerful swipe can just knock the lion aside (with potential to serious injury landing).

and just from some personal experience, i've seen black bear, and at one point hunted one. they are NOT fun to hunt, and it was quite literally life and death when it came down to the last moments. and since grizzly get the nod for being tougher then black bear, I'm going to only assume that the grizzly would have been twice as bad. Just from that, and what i've read and heard about lion attacks, i dont think it would stand up.

So in the end, (I think) the winnner would be:

...

but thats all meaningless,
<spoiler=cause everyone knows everything pales in comparison to Teddy>http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HlzshdUFnpU/TX4sj4-zf2I/AAAAAAAAAIc/Z6bsiP8Y5N8/s1600/teddy_roosevelt_pointing.jpg

hed kill both, bare handed, alone, at the same time, on his death bed.

cause you just dont talk about bears or who's toughest without talking about teddy

I remember hearing about this being done quite extensively around a hundred years ago. The bear won every time on account of it being stockier.

Well quite a while ago shows used to do this very thing and nearly every time the bear would win. It would hit the lion on the top of the head where the skull is weak and kill it.

This,

Also the lion has to go for ripping the throat of the bear, but as it were, can't get inside the jab of the bear, who used to usally one-shot the lion

There is an episode of QI (british comedy panel Show, if you don't know) which talks about this

Wrong, wrong, wrong. It must be embarrassing for you, following up an incorrect answer with /thread.

Remembering QI, the bear. Apparently lions have thinner skulls so the bear could just take it out in one swipe.

And no vs threads.
