When I started out it was pretty humble, games like sonic on the master system, rocket knight on the megadrive and Super Mario on the Snes. Played through them with little trouble or caring. It was only when I got a hold of Metal Gear Solid I actually started to care, the story made me fall into real games, not to denote the others but I prefer to enjoy games for fun when the only story is in the manual. Now my tastes are very varied, playing games when they interest me, sadly I have been playing some newer games for their namesakes i.e. Final Fantasy XIII and Sonic Rush. As a gamer not I simply go for that interests me, either for plot, style, or simple interest. Recently I dug out an old game called Digital Devil Saga (PS2) a game I found utterly fascinating, especially for a JRPG, its plot held my interest, as did its soundtrack and playstyle. I guess what I'm saying is that I'm at the point of gaming where I stop caring as much for hype and want people who obsess over retro to go suck themselves.
