Josh Trank, best known for his directorial debut and one of my personal favorites of the year Chronicle, has signed on to make an adaptation of the classic PS2 game Shadow of the Colossus.

Not much is known about the plot framework or whether or not the original story will set the movie, but at least we know that it won't be directed by say, Josh Liebesman or Michael Bay.

In related news, Trank has also been linked to 3 comic book movies: The Red Star, a Fantastic Four reboot, and a Spider Man spin-off revealingly named Venom. Technically, he's only been confirmed as the director for The Red Star, but he has been in negotiations for the other 2 projects while it seems that nobody else has asked to take the positions.

I don't know how to feel about this.

Chronicle had some good bits, but ultimately floundered with its own framing device (the POV). I would like to see what he could pull off with a real budget though.

But seriously, how do they expect to make a movie out of a game whose script could fit on a napkin? I doubt they're going to turn it into a primarily silent movie with a visual narrative.

At least it'll probably only be tangentially related to the game. Hollywood isn't going to risk a moderate-high budget on melancholy, mostly silent art film. They'll probably try to expand on the story of the guys from Wanders' realm, have some flashbacks with Wander and his girl, and have two or three really excellent combat scenes.

I really can't imagine how you'd do this game justice as a film, but whatever they do won't change my opinion of the game!

There are a few games which you just can't make a film about, this is one of those games.

The entire narrative is designed for being a game.
This. The game is a really bad candidate to turn in to a film. If it's aiming to be anything like the game it'll be so awful. If it isn't then they should just not bother.

I have high hopes and low dreads about SotC being a movie. Imagining how it would fit together (Wouldn't it make sense to have a huge monster fight in the beginning (one or two monster battles) to foreshadow Wander's doom, then a Montague of a few of the other battles, staying faithful to how he kills them. Some explanation towards the council and the lover. Maybe give him a single human enemy sent in to stop him and his madness.

However...

Ultimately my dread takes hold of me.

SotC: the Movie will likely be about a loner teenager having to battle 16 bullies in highschool, being able to see their 'weakspot' with a magic pen, and getting more brazen and crazed with each 'enemy', through the imaginings of his pen or something, to save his girlfriend from failing. And his teachers see him as a trouble-student, telling him it's a madman's quest.

It ends with him becoming a bully, himself and - once he realizes this, he screams out, "Nooooooooo!" - is expelled from school after accidentally killing his girlfriend.

You know, so convoluted and straying from what the actual game is that people stare in shock and are traumatized towards never seeing a great game the same ever again.

I wouldn't say this film is a complete disaster waiting to happen it just happens to be more than likely that it will be a complete disaster. Josh has only a small window of opportunity to actually capture the actual feeling or emotion you get from Shadow of the Colossus. I'd be more worried if he tried changing the ending in anyway. I figure I'd give him a shot with this movie just after a good review comes out.

I can't...

[HEADING=1]How is this even a thing?![/HEADING]

Of all the games that could be made into movies, they choose this one.

If anybody needs me, I'll be in the Angry Dome.

....Yeah....they're going to fuck this up. There's no way that Hollywood can take that quiet little unique game and not try to throw in some explosions or something.

I mean I know there are intense battles with huge colossi in it, but despite that there is little dialogue, nothing especially flashy about the action (which is GOOD), and said action scenes even seem to have a kind of calmness about them.

I hope to be pleasantly surprised...but no. That game is just too dignified for hollywood. They'll overcomplicate the story or fuck up the battle scenes or something.

*sighs*

EDIT: Though I suppose I should just be glad it wasn't M. Night Shambles -_-
