Long winded is an understatement, them books are so full of waffle that i gave up when i got to number 7. I can't be arsed reading 900 pages+ for the 300 that are actually entertaining.
I started reading the series when it first came out (in the early 90s...?) and this was my issue too -- back then I didn't have trouble with the first two books really, but then it started to drag for me in the 3rd book and I never made it past book 4...

It was fairly easy to give up (I think I started reading Feist instead back then?), as at the time WoT was still new-ish and no one knew the influence it would have -- now I feel like I need to revisit it, if but in an academic sense.

And actually the reason to go through it is because I want to read Sanderson, and I want to get a handle on the transition prior to taking on his new 1000 page work, "Way of Kings". I haven't read fantasy in a long time and I want some background review first.

Cheers,
