Yesterday A-net announced their plans for death, healing and tanking (to some extent) on the GW2 site. It would seem that GW2 is taking an approach to death similar to L4D and borderlands, and at the same time they will have no dedicated tanking or healing classes.

More info here:

So...What does everyone think about this new and interesting information?

Hell, i've been waiting for GW2 for years now.

So far there are only a few ideas that I do not like to have implemented. Though I would not mind having these plans for death implemented! Liked the system and it's original for an MMO?

Not having a dedicated tank is what GW already is. The Mobs you fight in the worlds always target the weakest charatcer. Either the one with the lowest health or the one with the lowest armor.

It excites, and scares me at the same time, how these Boss Battles with take place if there's not tank of any kind?

this sounds interesting, i love gw and guild wars 2 just sounds like a improvment and its not going to be the same grind as most mmo's, and getting rid of the traditional healer/tank/dps/other system is good its outdated and needs something new im so happy

I did, CC'ing the Boss untill it drops?

Their Calim of not going for the trinity isn't what I'd call justified. they still have their trinity but only renamed them a bit. Control for the tank? okey, it's CC'ing the heavy hitters until they drop. Support, "Proactive gameplay. Protect up front, dont heal afterwards!" just a nifty name for the Prot monk to masquerade their healer character.

DPS or "damage class" as they like to call it. Well every game has those, Else them big Guys wont go down, do they? Nothing bad about that.

The point is here that there is no class thats specifically designed to take these roles, and that you dont need anyone dedicated to any of these roles to succeed. You could all just take a little support and a little control instead and that would work as well.

aaah, Like the Wammo's running around with Heal Party and such. God, I had some laughs at moments like those. It feels they are trying something like: Let's give everyone everything! Then we can scratch our tanks and support because everyone got a little DPS a little Healing and a little Tank/CC skills! I'd welcome that though, those comics that were added in between the interview really covered my point! "you are preparing to have fun instead of having fun!" "They died while looking for a healer, how ironic."

So... no Monks anymore? I liked them. Well, anyway I hope we still can expect some kind of support class. Maybe something like the Priest and Cleric in Aion, Cleric was fun.

Been looking forward to gw2 for a very long time. And most of what i hear sounds good. I do get worried at all the changes tho. Alot of the elements that makes guild wars special are being removed in guildwars 2. Just got to wait and see i guess.

Im also not to sure about removing the tanking/healing classes. Probably becouse i prefer to heal :( But i've seen it in cryptics mmo's Champions online and Startrek online which while were ok mmo's they certianly werent that great or that big.

Infact a few other things i read about guildwars 2 have already been in cryptics mmo's like those world events and having no need to party with anyone. Being able to solo Champions and startrek lead me to not even needing to join a guild which seems weird if its going to be similar to guildwars 2. Everyone has the own option about each mmo but i really hope they dont borrow to much of craptics gaming mechanics.

While improvments are good for a gaming series im starting to get worried that to many changes might ruin this game for me :S And there seem to be ALOT of changes.

And gawd dammit! bring back meh monk!

Remember how no Elementalist ever used Water Magic (except for me, I absolutely loved it)?
If you read this interview, water elementalists are going to be able to do damage, control the battle by freezing enemies, plus healing, protecting and buffing their team mates. Something tells me they will become very popular this time around.

I'm really tense about this game now.
I'm definately going to get it, but I'm going to be absolutely gutted if it turns out I don't like it. I try not to get hyped up for any new games, to avoid being dissappointed, but I can't do it for GW2 for some reason.

I really REALLY hope it's a good game.

It was strongly hinted that you can still specialize in supporting your party with a lot of classes (like water eles with heals etc.), you just dont HAVE to have a specialized character to complete encounters. This is a great thing imo as it gives a lot more freedom with regards to playstyle and build creation.
Suddenly you dont need your 2-3 monk backline for organized pvp, because you get tools to make do without for example.
You could still take 3 water eles for heals and prots, but you could also take some defensive warriors instead etc, etc.

You can do that in GW today but to a much lesser extent.

Just because there won't be a healer class doesn't mean there might not be a monk class. He'd just be a badass martial artist or something leaping in front of fireballs to save his friends like some crazed bodyguard. That and smiting would become a viable way of playing an attacking role as opposed to an assortment of strange defensive offensive spells. Yay or nay?

If your dude is damage-heavy, he's got a better chance of finishing off an enemy and rallying while he's down. Not bad.

I wasn't that fussed about GW2, to be honest, never played the first one. This has got my interest up a little though, particularly the lack of dedicated healers and the defeat instead of death system. My ideal MMO would be a skill-based sandbox, but failing that I'll take anything that allows me a decent degree of character customisation(and no, choosing to be a healing priest or a slightly worse at healing priest is not customisation) and strikes a blow at Trinity gameplay.
