No! No, don't do it! Must not watch the video! It'll just make me want to play the game. I can't afford it. My social life can't take the hit. Guild Wars 1 cost me 8 months of my life. Never again!

*watched vid*

That looks pretty cool. Maybe I should look into pre-ordering... oh, God. It begins. Back, vile demons! I will not play your games!
You will make us whole...

Like Yahtzee said: the fact that there even is a "standard fantasy" setting is kind of depressing. However, some people have said that GW2 is "more Philip Pullman than Tolkein," which is perfectly fine by me.

I wonder though... if there is world PvP servers, will it just end up being like other games with world PvP, higher levels picking off new players. I like PvP'ing, but creating a character and never being able to actually play that character is quite annoying.
No indeed. That's something I like about the game. There are no designated PvP servers.

What they've said about PvP is this:
1. There is no open world PvP. No ganking possible.
2. There is, however "WvWvW PvP," as it's been called. It's three servers pitted against each other in a free-for-all battle in a special zone called The Mists. I love this, because it leads to each server having a feeling of community that isn't divided against itself.
3. Arena battles, which can be 5v5 or guild vs guild.
4. There is no dueling yet, but it may be added down the line.
5. You can level up doing nothing but PvP, if you so choose.

So am I the only one who enjoys the Trinity of RPGs? I really can't think of how one could make it so everyone is self sufficient unless you completely change the mechanics of games. Tanks need to reduce lots of damage at the expense of damage out, so unless everyone has tank level survival and ridiculous self heals/low mob damage it would seem you would need to bounce the mob between people.

Side note: I play tanks. I like being the awesome meatshield who take a bosses fist to the face and keeps on going.

Looks good, but I'm still a little peeved that the Dervish and Assassin aren't in the lineup of classes and the Tengu aren't a playable race. Just because it seems to take place in Tyria, doesn't mean that people from the other continents don't live there too :(

Ahh, and form what I remember of people talking about GW 1, it isnt equipment driven, so there wont be "the best" PvP, PvE gear possible.

looking a lot like I found I new MMO to get addicted to...

[small]but then again, anything is better than the gank-fest that was Darkfall.[/small]
Oh, that's right. That was another thing. They give everyone a handful of items to start with in WvWvW and lock all other items (I think), so buying your own items and gaining an advantage that way is impossible. They want it to be all about skill.

Which is pretty much exactly what they've done. They've done away with the ideas of "healing," "tanking," and "DPS" entirely and replaced them with "support [http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Support]," "control [http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Control]," and just plain "damage [http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Damage]." Everyone has access to some amount of all three, but you can lean toward specializing if you'd prefer. You can't completely specialize, though.

In addition, combat is more like an action game than a typical MMO. You have to dodge and block attacks rather than take them to the face, and you can also use certain abilities to prevent damage in other ways (like applying conditions to enemies). Then you use your chosen self-heal to make up for what you can't avoid. You also have to help each other out in big battles where self-sufficiency isn't possible.

I'm having trouble getting this page [http://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/combat/healing-death/] to load, but it seems to talk about this kind of thing in more detail.

Two things.

1. The other continents are currently blocked off because of a couple Elder Dragons in the way. Once we've dealt with them, we should be seeing expansions in the new continents with new professions and playable races. (New playable races are definitely confirmed to be in the works for the future.)

2. Assassin is in the game. It's been reworked as the thief profession.

I admit, i'm impressed. I mentioned looking at TOR as something better, but maybe Guild Wars 2 can be the game I leave WoW for.

The combat looks a lot more fluid, and the ability to be self sufficient is a major perk. Which leads into the lack of class roles, i'm tired of being forced into being a healer for my guild just because i'm the only one good enough to do it. I want to blow shit up dammnit!

I'm intrested in seeing what the system requirements will be. It looks pretty and there seems to be a lot of flashy moves, i'm just concerned with lag. Part of what makes WoW so successful is the fact that it can be played on any system made after 2000. While I doubt that'll be true for Guild Wars 2, i'm hoping it'll still be able to run without having to spend $600 upgraded my memory/graphics card to play it.
They promise mid range, and considering GW1 system reqs, I'd say anything after 2007 will be able to run it.

Aren't Thieves good enough for assassins? In any case there are still two more classes TBA so theres hope for dervishes, i'm hoping for mesmers to come back as well.

*EDIT* sorry, apparently you have been quoted on that already.

Also i really wish that Tengu were playable as well. Other than humans they were the only race that i wanted to play.

Maybe Tengu, assassins and/or dervishes will be added in the inevitable expansion packs, don't think it'd be impossible to see an expansion pack about the reclamation of Cantha by a descendent of the emperor once the dragon problem has been solved in the core Guild Wars 2 campaign.

Of course you're not the only one that enjoys trinity play but for all those that enjoy it, there are tons of good MMORPGs for you to choose from, whereas everyone else only has Guild Wars 2 to look forward to as that one good MMORPG that's truly trying to mix up combat.

Also Arenanet have already made GW2 into a game where trinity combat just won't work. They've already given every player a self-heal as their most viable method of healing and a lot more effort is put on preventing damage, not receiving & recovering from damage. Also the game already has bosses that can down any player in 1 or 2 hits [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jx0QnKgQ1CI], so I really can't imagine it being possible to tank such a creature. GW2 is all about avoiding and preventing damage.

Personally I'm looking forward to GW2's more engaging form of combat, where positioning & movement is key [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pnwPcgm7-Iw] and my role is not predetermined by what class I picked. It's certainly more interesting than everyone being pigeonholed into roles; a tank always ensuring that all the mobs & bosses are beating on it, a heal always ensuring that the party's health is topped off and everyone else just spamming their rotation, taking care of all the mobs & bosses.

Sure, maybe Tengu could be a new playable race, since Arenanet have mentioned that they plan to added new races in future expansions. As for Assassins & Dervishes... Assassins have been re-worked as the new Thief profession [http://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/professions/thief/], so Assassins are now Thieves. Having both would just be redundant. I doubt Dervishes will be in the game because there isn't any Scythes in GW2 and there have been no mention of them in the novels.

However there has been mentioned of a Mesmer and some kind of Engineer in the novels and those 2 will likely be the new professions, seeing how they fall into the slot of the 2 remaining professions that Arenanet have hinted at numerous times. 1 scholar that is a returning profession (Mesmer) & 1 adventurer that is a new profession (Engineer).

Well, in the original Guild Wars there weren't any scythes and spears until the Dervish and Paragon got introduced, so if they reintroduce Elona sometime they could reintroduce those too, it's how it went in the original GW. I was just using Cantha in my example, so yeah, couldn't use the Dervish example.

I haven't played an MMORPG since before the first WoW expansion, but Guild Wars 2 looks really good to me. The battles in particular looks awesome, and no monthly fee is a huge dealbreaker for poor old me.

Sure but keep in mind that all weapons that will be in the game upon released have already been announced (no scythes, spears or polearms) and adding a new weapons in GW2 will mean adding new skills, for that weapon, for all the professions that will use said weapon.
