Hey Guys and Gals, as you can probably see, I'm new here. I'm considering getting Guild Wars and would like some opinions from you and if it can match a game such as WoW in enjoyment without the time dedications.

Thanks

It's a fun game.

I haven't played it in a while, but when I did play it I enjoyed it.

The game itself is pretty good. It's community is for the most part... not. Espcially for a newbie. Don't play it unless you can get several of your friends along to play it with you.

I haven't played since the original but the PvP in the game was amazing. Don't play it if you prefer soloing or pve'ing. The game is a group pvp game for sure.

I played Guildwars alone, and i recommend it.

It's quite fun to play, just out of curiosity, which of the GW games are you considering getting?

i played it and i thought it was ok, but as far as MMOs go its not great. the only reason you should buy this over any other MMO is the no subscription fee, in terms of actual gameplay or popularity, world of warcraft, EVE online, city of heroes are all much better!

I've just bought prophecies and factions (the first and second games) after having nightfall (the third game) for a couple of years.

I really enjoy playing it, I find it easier to level up here than in WOW and find it equally fun playing alone or with friends.

I think theres a little of something for everyone, as character creation lets you choose from a good range of professions which are genuinely different. There are several paths you can choose along the main quests (and many many side quests) meaning its not always the same game if you play through again.

Id reccommend giving at a try as its pretty inexpensive and theres no monthly fee!
If you go for it and have questions feel free to message me and i will help if i can.
As evertw says, which game are you thinking of buying?

I think Guild Wars is pretty enjoyable. I have Prophecies and Factions and I play it every once in a while. Group PvP can be great fun, I never liked the PvE aspect of it though, but maybe that's just me.

I play Guild Wars, and still enjoy it to some extent. It's definately more PvP oriented than WoW for example. You can't expect it to be as much fun as a game that costs so much more, but for the price it's good. Definately more fun when played with friends though, or a guild that will help you.

I'm planning on getting the complete collection (If somethings worth doing, its worth doing properly after all), and I've had my eyes on being a mesmer for a while now. Is the PvP laggy in any way? That is one of the main reasons I want to avoid WoW (Ex-WoW Player, Too Expensive for what it is, Laggy as HECK in PvP, BG etc).

I do enjoy PvP so I think the game will be alright, I just wanted to hear the communities opinions (much more mature than somewhere like GameFAQS etc).

Thanks for the replies so promptly

I dont experience any lag, Im on a 10mb connection and have instant messenging clients and xfire open at the same time, but i dont play that much pvp in the game to be honest.

Mesmer is my secondary profession, Im an elementalist as primary with my main account.

I got a trial key for 10hrs/14days use of Nightfall when i bought the game, I think its still valid but im not certain, I havent used it, might be worth a go, if you interested i can pm it to you to try? :)

Depends on what you're looking for. I've played both WoW and GW and I think WoW is a better game, but that's largely because of the community. To be fair though, I didn't play GW for nearly as long as I played WoW, and I think I was sick of MMOs when I started playing GW so there's probably some bias in there.

I like it, I'm willing to accept that it's as grind-tastic as every other MMO out there, but I think the "grind" in Guild Wars is optional, as opposed to most other where it's absolutely necessary.

I played a lot of PvE and a good amount of GvG battles when I played and I loved it. The only reason I quit back then was my computer was going bad and when I bought the new one the person I had left my account to had stripped it completely clean and I didn't feel like starting over again.

I recently entered the game and cannibalized my old account and my mother's old account (both had been loaned to another person who quit about 6 months ago) and he had stripped the accounts fairly well before he quit but left his cash. So now I have about 150 plat and a dozen of the mini follower pet dudes and I'm going to get back into it when school is over.

I'm really interested in getting my Ranger pet build going again because I hear they revamped that build a bit and I used to love my Ranger.

A wannabe of what? D&D? It's closer to that than it is to WoW...

As a lover of both PvE and soloing, I left the game pretty quick after those became impossible (within a system I found hostile to PUGs). Still, clearly a lot of people enjoy it, so I'm not one to bash it.

I don't know. When it actually works, no one responds to my challenges.
EDIT: Sorry, I thought it said "Genre Wars". Ignore this post.

Thanks for the offer, but no thank you. I'm waiting till ater my exams finish and then i'll buy the whole thing.

Are the classes diverse enough to be interesting though? In that each class has its own role that helps a team rather than being replaceable by just about anything (Example, in WoW, a Mage could be replaced by a Druid, Shaman, Shadow Priest, Warlock etc, losing a lot of the reason for taking that class) I understand it happens at times but I would like to know that each class is appreciated rather than set into the catergory of 'Tank, DPS or Healer'
