I just noticed the guild wars trilogy on steam for 20$
Now, I've heard about Guild Wars but it never really penetrated my intrest filters. However, looking at the development blog for guild wars 2 there seems to be some really cool heads behind this game.
In your opinions, is getting into GW1 now worth it?

it was cheap, i bought the trilogy, was it worth it? no and yes, yes because you know you can come back at any time in your life, no because it is boring, it is a singleplayer game, with co-op and a slight mmo feel to it, if you want an rpg with a mahmorpuhguh feel, get it, if not get something else, like dragon age, for the multiplayer..it's not worth it

oh and guild wars 2 seems to have bent under the pressure of it's peers, it has taken the mmorpg route and i think thats great, it actually looks nice, i mean guild wars is linear, you cant even jump!

Having played it. The beginning game is great casual, the endgame is great hardcore, but the middle is dreadfully tedious.

Yes. It is still pretty active if not as active as at launch. The graphics and game design are holding up well.
Are you playing the same game I am? It's nowhere near as active as it used to be. Some areas are all but dead now.

OT: Guild Wars is the only MMO I ever loved. Take that as you want.

You're a noob.

Guild Wars is more PvP than any other MMORPG out there. They tacked on Singleplayer for all the losers who like to be anti-social in their lives.

They hold weekly tournaments and even tournaments with real cash prizes all the time. The reason the level maxes out at 20 and the skill bar is restricted to eight is because of PvP. That's why from the "get-go," you can immediately make a PvP character and get straight into the action.

I played Guild Wars for two years straight. I posted in a few threads about it. I'm probably one of the best GW players on this entire site. For $20, it's a good game.

EDIT: The game is no where near as active as it used to be. Many have switched to Aion or World of Warcraft. With that said, a lot of the players are playing Guild Wars because of the lack of funds or interests for said two games.

For 20 bucks, maybe.

Otherwise, I wouldn't advise. I'm biased, of course, like everyone else when it comes to opinions, but I found Guild Wars to be pretty horrible. Maybe I don't like the setting and certain game mechanics - like not being able to jump.

Meh, it's worth a try, I guess.

I'm always confused why people mention the inability to jump as one of Guild Wars' weak points. I mean, it certainly has its weak points, but what does it matter if you can or can't jump? Is the game any worse because you can't jump? Would skipping around like a madman make the game any more enjoyable? Is jumping some kind of mandatory feature for games, even if it wouldn't serve any purpose?

I've come back to it because of this steam sale. It isn't anywhere near as busy as at launch but not long after launch there were times when some areas were pretty lifeless. I see people in the main areas chatting and recruiting for guilds.

Because when something is done, take one step back and it's considered a failure. Jumping was a strong (and fun) point of World of Warcraft. The "jump" doesn't exist in Guild Wars because of the way it's PvP system works. Dodging would be too simple for their system. Which isn't what they want.

And even stated by avid World of Warcraft fanatics, healing in Guild Wars is about 10x harder to do. Good luck being a monk in serious PvP. I can't even do it.

It's $20 worth of fun to be sure. That's a good deal and I would recommend picking it up.

So in other words, they had a very good reason not to include a jump button in GW, and the only reason people complain about it is because they want the game to be more like WoW?

Excuse me while I stop pretending to be interested in this issue.

It's kinda dead, you'll be doing a lot of the quests/missions on your own with henchies/heroes, you might find a group in various places, but it's rare to find a group of 8 people that are all doing a mission. It's a shame too, I remember playing this 4 years or so back and being stuck on the same mission for ages, and every day I'd group up with another 8 people to re-attempt it, that place is deserted now and you're expected to do everything with bots. Fortunately, Zaishen missions have been added to add some variety and team play.

It's worth it for $20 still, I play it mainly for the PvP, and it is quite awesome that still to this day no one has found the little spot I've been farming for money since Nightfall was released, as well as some other places scattered throughout the various campaigns.

It's quite lonely now, but it's still (imo) a great game.

Good news: No subscription fees
Bad news: No subscription fees (see playstation home and runescape for why this can be bad)

In addition, while you CAN single player most of it, the game will force you to play multiplayer, which is nice... if you can find the right party that is. Everything depends on a good group. Also, some of the classes are truely useless (ie most melee) for some reason, and they are constantly be pruned back more than they are getting anything good done for them. As for a lack of jump, you can get caught in the environment sometimes and it just gets annoying when that happens. It also feels like you're on rails without the ability to jump for some reason.

One of the big things it seems to love to advertise is that only has 20 levels, so there's less grinding. This sounds good until you realize that it exchanges that with constant micromanaging of only 8 skills every single time you enter a town. And the grind doesn't go away because the best armors in the game are absurdly expensive and need several components to make, meaning you will be grinding, and selling, and bartering to finally get what you need.

I would say it's worth $20, but if you don't mind paying subscriptions, I found City of Heroes/Villains way better as an MMO.

I got it as soon as it went on steam sale... Regretted not snatching it up at christmas, and was considering just buying the first section off sale.
It hasn't dissapointed so far and I've put quite a few hours in.
The strong storyline mode and henchmen make it closer to a single player experience then multiplayer, But I haven't tried the pvp.
Though I'm quite into MMOs, So I'm biased.

I did not enjoy the trial though. Whilst the actual game I am really enjoying, the trial bored me to tears.

Anyone got a good guild with any interest in recruiting someone who is GMT and probably (judging by the "you have been playing for 3 hours, please take a break" messages) pretty hardcore?
message me if you are.
