it was cheap, i bought the trilogy, was it worth it? no and yes, yes because you know you can come back at any time in your life, no because it is boring, it is a singleplayer game, with co-op and a slight mmo feel to it, if you want an rpg with a mahmorpuhguh feel, get it, if not get something else, like dragon age, for the multiplayer..it's not worth it
You're a noob.

Guild Wars is more PvP than any other MMORPG out there. They tacked on Singleplayer for all the losers who like to be anti-social in their lives.

They hold weekly tournaments and even tournaments with real cash prizes all the time. The reason the level maxes out at 20 and the skill bar is restricted to eight is because of PvP. That's why from the "get-go," you can immediately make a PvP character and get straight into the action.

I played Guild Wars for two years straight. I posted in a few threads about it. I'm probably one of the best GW players on this entire site. For $20, it's a good game.

EDIT: The game is no where near as active as it used to be. Many have switched to Aion or World of Warcraft. With that said, a lot of the players are playing Guild Wars because of the lack of funds or interests for said two games.
Wow, having that sort of abrasive, cocky attitude and insulting people WHILE on probation? Not a good idea.

OT: Only get Guild Wars if you have the time to devote to an MMO. It's not a very good impulse buy.

I've been playing it for years and I still like it.
They're still adding new content, btw (free, that is)

Bullshit, you do not know the skill level of every single Guild Wars player on this site, so please, stop your bragging.

Besides, the point of it being based solely on PVP is crazy, both parts are designed equally. Sure, it has the best PVP of any MMO out there, but the PVE is not bad, its different.

Its different because its not about having the best skills or the best equipment, its about knowing how to use your skills and weapons to form unique set-ups to accomplish certain tasks. PVE can be just as difficult, if not more so, than PVP. Guild Wars is a strategic MMORPG. Its nothing like WoW, and personally, I believe that to be a good thing.

So, in short, its worth 20$.

I've play guild wars almost since the beginning I'd say its a good game, it can be a little hard to make friends, but having a good guild makes the game AWESOME! I have a pretty good guild with lots of friends that i made in the game, so if you guys wanna try it check out the free game trail on the guild wars site and then make your call, but all the cool stuff happens later on in the game.

Also, some of the classes are truely useless (ie most melee) for some reason,
That statement, is completely debatable. Its not hard fact by no means, in PvP, most melee is pointless. On the other hand, PVE a good tank can mean the difference between winning and losing. Its all about style, someone who's just fucking around as a melee will just screw over the group, but with any brains can be the best thing for a group. Its not the classes that are messed up, its the players.

Think about assassins in pvp . Also , warriors can provide a vital pressure to the enemy casters , especially monks , using conditions and knock-down.
Except for high-end areas where a tank might be vital , I find myself useless when playing melee especially if there is a MM present .

GW is one of the best MMOs out there. Making a character actually takes skill and strategy. The skill set is such that there are thousands of possible builds, all with there unique play style. Single player is consistently far, far more frantic then your average MMO, and the low level cap and gear selection means that you get right to the end game very quickly, relying on little more then your ability in order to survive and thrive. It probably has the best PvP of any MMO to date as well, with a constantly evolving metagame. And of course, no subscription fees means that it is great to pick up from time to time, which Henchmen and Heroes make it so it is very Solo friendly. If you like MMOs, I can't imagine not liking GW. If you don't like MMO's, there is a chance it MIGHT convert you.

Just to let you know, you can take a character that has beaten 1 campaign, and bring them over to another campaign, and screw up very little in terms of difficulty curve. Prophecy levels you up fairly quickly for an MMO, but glacierally slow compared to the other installments. Factions lets you hit level cap nigh-instantly, which is nice if you want to just get there. Nightfall is a nice balance between the 2, leveling you up pretty quickly, but at least make you feel like you did some work to get there.

It was okay back in the day. Unfortunately, Arenanet (the devs) didn't really do a good job with the updates. They updated a lot and had good community support, but they updates weren't good. It started to go downhill in... 2006? Idk. Haven't played it in a long time. Maybe its better now. When I quit the in-game economy was all fucked up and farming for good items to sell was pretty much impossible.

I guess it's a good deal. It depends on what you want. It's not fast paced like a shooter, and mobility isn't as good because of jumping issues. However, PvP is good and the PvE is ok in the higher areas.

But for the most part it has died down a good bit. It probably will mostly die completely when GW2 comes out(maybe next year?), though.

Ahh I remember guild wars back in the prime before everybody got psyched about guild wars 2.
They're starting to nerf every farming class for PvE so people quit and buy Guild Wars 2.
The PvP is awesome because it's based on skills and not on your gear.As for the guy who said the best armor is super expensive he's misinformed or stupid. The max armor is avaliable very early on in the games and is relatively cheap. It costs 10 plats for the basic set. If you want to look cool after you beat one of the campaigns which are very well written and this game has probably the best stories out of any MMO you can buy elite armor which is super expensive but looks cool. It's just a show off thing though so it's up to you if it's worth it or not. Gear matters a bit but isn't very important and is mostly based on the skills you bring into battle and how well you use your class.

In short Yes I reccomend it.

I bought it a few days ago and i'm enjoying it so far, if you want a beginners impression read on.
This is for the roleplaying side not the pvp.

So far it has a standard mmo questing set up with a bit more of a singleplayer feel to it. If you are not in the mood for a bit of a grind then don't bother getting it.
(as it happens i was getting my once yearly craving that has so far made me play up to lvl45 in wow over the period of 3 years but i drift)

That said i am loving the amount of detail in the backstory, and the main quest line is interesting so far and promises quite a bit more later.
It has a fast travel system the same a oblivion, once you have been to a major area you can teleport there at will afterwards.
The battle system is interesting, its focused on skills and points into the attributes for those skills rather than standard leveling. Look it up on youtube and see for yourself.
You can unlock plenty of skills by sidequests and so far they have been interesting and varied.
The graphics are nothing fantastic but they aren't bad at all for a game that was released in 2005.

Overall impression so far: If you are looking for a decent mmo this is nice and cheap and it is definitely worth the sale price.

It's a fun game and it has a good system. Personally I had a lot of fun with it. I only stopped playing because my brother and I pretty much mastered the game as far as we were concerned (only took somewhere around 3 or 4 years, heh heh). I just want to give the following suggestions: find a competent guild to teach you how to play, farm your nuts off, Always test builds before using them in PVP, and never be afraid to use henchies if you can't get a group. If you're serious about getting it, I suggest using this site for all your questions: http://guildwars.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page

Good luck.

I bought it when it first came out at the recommendation of a friend. This game taught me to read reviews and maybe watch some gameplay videos before dropping at-release prices on a game. I loved Diablo and the FF series, so I thought the RPG element would be enough to keep me going.

Maybe it's my ignorance of MMO interfaces, but I found the controls to be counterintuitive and painful. I got through about 2 hours of it before tossing it aside as boring and more of a pain to play then it was worth.

At $20, though, I suppose it's worth a shot especially if you've liked MMOs in the past or PvP play as many previous posters have mentioned.

guild wars tends to have different play themes in each campain.

Prophieces was grt for starters, u started low lvled and stayed low until the end, for the most part u were still lving throughout the story, at the last 10 or so missions u finally got to lvl 20.
In factions the game expects u to do all the quests because u r expected to be at lvl 20 by the 4th or 5th mission. The game gets harder by throwing larger mobs of enemies at u.
Nightfall introduced Heros which r AI controled players that u equip, give skills and weapons to, they lvl up with u and gain XP from quests like u, they also can be commanded to use specific skills/not use skills and can be stationed at an area. I found the heros to be much better then the healer henchmen who used ineffective builds. the game itself, much like factions, made u max out to 20 by the 6th or 7th mission.
Eye of the North isn't its own campain, instead, u have to travel to it, its technically in Prophicies map but there is no way to get to it. u get heros again, but these heros r lvl 20 with maxed armor and weapons, so u can go to EotN, get the lvl 20 heros, then go back to prophecies and destroy everything.

My biggest complaint is the PvP for low lvled areas from lvls 1-10, what happened was that some players bought runs to lvl 20 areas, bought the lvl 20 armor and weapons, then pvped with amazing skills and equipment. i did this and litterally took down 4 lvl 8 guys when i was lvl 5. the players just hit 0s on me while i killed them in 3 hits. as a result of everyone doing this, low lvl pvp became normal pvp, except u have to spend massive amounts of money. so low lvl pvp died.

anyone who says it's a boring single player game needs to actually play the game. it's easily one of the most well made free action rpg. the pvp is extremely good and to be honest the game is still very active especially since the game was originally released in 2004 (beta). It still looks very good given the fact it was released so many years ago. I am not kidding this thing makes all other mmos besides maybe aion look like garbage from a graphics standpoint.
