Does Halo (#6) blanket all Halo games or only Halo: Combat Evolved? And super mario kart is really number 1?? And how come if they put GTA on the list so many times they left off GTA IV?

In what twisted universe a package containing TF2+HL2+HL2:1+HL2:2+Portal is worse than Mario Kart? Also, The Orange Box cost is cheaper than Mario Kart.

Where the guys on shrooms or something?
(I know that is their opinion, but I'm still pissed off)

Final Fantasy XII in front of VII? That's a huge call. VII even spawned the Advent Children movie it was that popular.

What is this list based off of? Things like thins bother me because every persons idea of what a good game is differs. world records cannot be based off opinions, their has to be statistical facts behind it.

For instance you can say...
"Michel Shumaker is the most successful Formula One driver of all time."
That's true, its not like you can disagree, he holds that record.

You cannot however say that
"The Roiling Stones holds the world record for best musical group"
You cant say this because one, its wrong, and two, it cannot be quantified. you can quantify success, not opinions.

Halo only counts for Combat Evolved because if that was the case There wouldn't be 15 GTA's, 20 Zeldas and 42 Marios.
I feel they shouldn't put there sequels in the same line if the sequels were just ass good.

Mario Kart WTF

I agree as much with the list as I think that Bush was a good president.
I am with you. I mean Mario Kart belongs high on the list but not No.1. I thought that was downright strange and I am a Nintendo Fanboy.

Let's see. We're limiting this to console games, so I'd say Oblivion and Orange Box don't belong, because I refuse to admit that Oblivion was a 360 game ported to PC (it's the other way round) and that can't be fairly said to count.

Also, if you want to talk influence and lasting impact, of course Super Mario Kart belongs in the top 10 because it is a major cash cow for Nintendo and outsells all other racing games on Nintendo's platforms.

That said, my personal top 10 for console games (applying Guinness criteria to at least some extent):
1. Tetris
2. Final Fantasy 6
3. Super Mario Bros.
4. Tecmo Bowl
5. Super Mario Kart
6. Halo: Combat Evolved
7. Grand Theft Auto 3
8. Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec
9. Katamari Damacy
10. Pokemon Red/Blue

Also, if we're talking "most influential", shouldn't E.T. or the Atari 2600 version of Pac-Man get a (dis)honorable mention?

EDIT: Zombiepandaman, you are incorrect. Alexei Pajitnov's Tetris Company has regained the rights to Tetris and is now the exclusive licensor for the game concept.

This list makes no sense. FFVII should be where FFXII is.

Goldeneye influenced Halo.
Super Mario Bros. influenced Super Mario World.
It makes sense that Grand Theft Auto 1 is up there because IT BEGAN the crime, open world genre. So I have no problem with it being number 3.

The Orange Box is more Influential than Wii Sports?!? Really? When was the last time we have seen a great series put 3 or more games altogether in one box? What followed the Orange Box that showed its influential nature? At least Wii Sports has shovelware following it.

Gran Turismo should be in the top 10 because it began the realistic physics driving game which followed with Project Gotham and Forza.

Super Mario 64 SHOULD be in the top 3 because where would 3D Gaming be without the beauty of that game? At least it beat Tomb Raider. I would have been pissed if Tomb Raider beat Super Mario 64 (Im looking at you defunct magazine Gamefan).

Super Mario Kart is a debatable number one but it really doesn't bother me.

Wouldn't Grand Theft Auto III be in there somewhere? I don't mind San Andreas but GTA3 should take Vice City's place SINCE it came before VC.

My top 10 would have been

1.Super Mario Bros (Began the Platform genre)
2. Tetris (The "First" Casual videogame)
3. Super Mario 64 (Pinnacle of 3D Gaming that led to the classics we see now)
4.Grand Theft Auto (Began open-world gameplay)
5.Street Fighter 2 Turbo (Perfected the fighting genre)
6. Goldeneye (Showed FPS could be done on Home systems)
7. FF VII (Began the popularity of RPGs in the west)
8.Pokemon Red/Blue (Began the RPG/card based monster games genre)
9. Resident Evil 4 (What 3D Third person game doesnt use RE4's over the shoulder camera angle)
10.Gran Turismo (As I said in my earlier post, began the realistic driving physics genre)

Guitar Hero would be 11 since everyone including hot girls love to play it and Rock Band ^_^

I love Metal Gear Solid so much and wanted to put it in my list but there aren't enough stealth based games that are really popular.

Thats a real tough call. I looked at your list a few times and I cant seem to place it anywhere on it.
Also MGS3 Should have been on the list, That was Metal Gear Done right.

Donkey Kong?

Prince of Persia S.O.T?

Mass Effect? - Can definately take Oblivion's place as it was released on PC first.

Streets of Rage?

Spyro the Dragon?

Any and all of these should be on this list...

EDIT: Any top (insert number) list should be voted for by the public. Or at least given a list of games submitted by industry professionals and then have the public vote on the ordering of the list.

It's good to see Tekken 2 finally get some love.

But Super Mario Kart at #1? Really?

Also, where the hell is Majora's Mask?

I feel you on these 3, Sands of Time story line was great and I'm a big fan of Mass Effect.
Aside from Double Dragon I'm also surprised that Streets wasn't on the list. Again I guess if there was 100 top games list it would be there.

I also wonder about Downloadable console games, Some of them are full Games all together.
Braid, GTA Lost and Damned, Street Fighter HD, Megaman 9, Penny Arcade, Castle Crashers, Alien Hominid and so many more made big changes in gaming.
Megaman 9 and Street Fighter Broke sale, Penny Arcade is one of the best DL RPG's to date,Castle Crashers is like a Crack Addiction.
So shouldn't games that are Downloaded on Consoles get Recognition?

This list has several flaws but I refuse to find fault with it when they've chosen to include...

SinfulKnight said:
* Gunstar Heroes (#33)
Sure it's flawed, but you've got Super Metroid, Sonic 2, Tetris (which has fully earned it's position. How many falling block games have you ever played? Okay, now how many falling block games did you play BEFORE Tetris came out? Exactly.), Street Fighter 2, Castlevania: SOTN...

Lots of truly fantastic games which other lists have overlooked. So please stop bitching about Halo and FFXII being in there- no list is ever gonna be perfect, even if having Mario Kart at number 1 was a pretty foolish choice.

Bioshock should be replaced by System shock 2...
Lol... wait, that WAS sarcasm right?
He's right- apart from the graphics SS2 is immeasurably superior to Bioshock in terms of gameplay mechanics. But, as everyone else has said, SS2 was a PC game and this is a list for CONSOLE games. So please people, stop and read before claiming that SS2, Total War, Civilisation etc should be on the list.
