For my information, was Rock Band and Guitar Hero made by the same people, or were they seperate altogether? I never was much into the franchise, but I like the idea of seeing whether people saying 'no, it's dumb' might have made a bad call.
Rockband was made by a separate company
Well, yes and no. Harmonix (creators of Rock Band,) made Guitar Hero 1&2, which is why they were great. Unfortunately, Activision bought the rights to Guitar Hero and handed the series to Neversoft (creators of the Tony Hawks games) to develop. And so in Guitar Hero 3, the 'feel' of the first two games disappeared to be replaced by corporate sponsorship, ridiculous ports to different consoles and a general sense of dull emptiness.

Guitar Hero 3 completely missed the point of the original games by making everything far too technical and difficult instead of fun. Which is why I own Rock Band instead.

Anyway, back on topic. It's a really, really dumb idea for Neversoft to try and beat Harmonix at their own game because unless their game is significantly cheaper than Rock Band (which it probably won't be,) then it's going to flounder desperately for support. Most of the people who've bought Rock Band are unlikely to buy GH: World Tour, simply because they aren't going to want to splash out money on new peripherals.

What Neversoft should have done is tried to make a more in depth simulation of the guitar to try and appeal to their more hardcore fanbase. Instead they've chosen to go head to head with the original creators of the game that they are now remaking...

Nice, but didn't Kentucky Fried Chicken sue Colonel Sanders out of business when he tried to open up a new franchise after he sold the rights to KFC? Why can't the owners of Guitar Hero do the say to Neversoft and 'say uh, you sold this to us, we own this shit.'? Or was 'instrumental peripherals' not part of the deal or something.

personally i don't get why people have a beef with guitar hero 3....... its not a very difficult game if you play on medium and easy..... why ***** about hard...... it's for those that want to push their own abilities

I personally think that GH3 has got a rather bad rap. I play it and I find it incredibly fun, so what's all the fuss about?

In my opinion GH ripping off Rock Band is probably a good thing, since GH traditionally deals with Guitars (DUH!) and this may have become a bit stagnant lately. Since the GH songs are so fun, and rather challenging, to play, if they can transfer that to a Rock Band style party game then good on them. Rock band was a good idea (ripping GH off ever so slightly) but you had to admit the guitar sections left more to be desired. If GH can give me Rock band with GH's guitar mastery then good for them.

Also the song-mixer feature looks really interesting

Obviously they are just trying to compete with Rock Band, but I really don't think its a good idea. the GH series is so well established that throwing in adding instruments will be like your favorite rock band suddenly switching over to like country or something. Its just goning to make vets of the series uneasy. I didn't buy rock band because of its hefty price tag, but I got GH cause it wasn't too expensive since I already had a guitar. The added instruments are only going to raise the price and I think more ppl are going to turn to rock band.
