What I don't understand I the people who play ages and get crazy GH skills. I mean, why be awesome at an imitation. I asked my brother this and he said "Because I can't play the guitar". That just makes no sense.

Kay, I mostly play drums in Rock Band, in Guitar Hero I use a 360 controller and in real life I can play bass, drums and piano.

1) Yes, mostly bass but I can play normal guitar too, I guss it's because you can fail and not hvae the shame of real people booing you of stage (not that I fail much). But when playing Guitar Hero I use the 360 controller so it's not like playing a guitar anyway so it doesn't matter, it does help improve my hand-eye coordination as well as my reaction timing.

2) Meh, doesn't concern me.

3)Well, I already could kind of play guitar. Bass and piano I could play properly. The only instrument I really took on was the drums, but that was after Rock Band.

1.) Yes. I was school in classical guitar, mostly fandango, doble-paso and flamenco guitar.
I also play drums and right now I'm going to a music school to do a 2 year long jazz drum programme.

Playing real guitar is way harder than the plastic guitar stuff I would say, at least compared to the jazz stuff I'm used to play to + improvisation technique and shit.

Playing guitar Hero makes my brain relax and not think too much of all the other music I need to learn, also it's fun to play Guitar Hero World Tour with friends, even though I pesonally like Rock Band more

I play guitar and could never stand guitar hero, although I knew my sisters boyfriend was a big fan so I bought Legends of Rock for him for Christmas. It had Slash in so I had to have a go on it, anyway turns out it's addictive as hell. I had alot of fun with it but I agree with you completely about the people who can complete it all on the highest difficulty, why not put that effort into an actual guitar?

It is just a game though and it's not a bad one at that, I used to think "I play guitar, why would I wanna pretend to?", but nah it is pretty fun.

Also I think it's a good social game, because even though I can play One by Metallica on a real guitar I can have someone who's never touched a guitar before kick my ass at it on Guitar Hero which I think is cool.

I don't play real guitar. I never really had the desire, let alone the patience to learn.

I used to play guitar hero 2 a lot, but I was really disappointed in guitar hero 3.
I also can't really get into rock band or world tour unless I have people over. It's okay, but it's a lot more fun if you have a whole band and it's not just you playing by yourself.

If I was going to try and learn a real instrument though, I'd go for the piano.

Until then, I'm a gamer, not a musician.

Another thought I had is that it's way easier to become good enough to absolutely shred on something like One or Raining Blood on Expert than it is to be good enough to play said songs on a real guitar and have it sound like the real deal. However, as I mentioned before, I already had some good training for my fingers thanks to saxophone, so getting up to Expert level may have been easier for me.

1. Yes. Not sure why I like it...I just like rhythm games - always have.
2. Not applicable.
3. No. My skill at guitar hero may be attributed to many years of playing the piano though.

1) Yes I play guitar, but not very well. If I play Guitar Hero, I actually get to play songs I like which I wouldn't normally because I'm so crap at real guitar.

2) Can't say, but my little brother decided to play guitar after playing GH and he's actually not too bad at it.

3) Not me. I've already got a guitar, piano, drum kit and a violin which I play for real.

I play Guitar and I enjoy playing Guitar Hero whenever I go to a friends house or play it at a shop like JB HiFi or something. I wouldn't buy the game because I don't wanna plonk down the money for a bunch of plastic instruments and a game I wouldn't play by myself.

I've been playing guitar for 8 years now. It was 7 before I discovered Guitar Hero. It's fun, so what? I find it interesting how your finger movements on the fretboard of the plastic 'guitar' on songs you know differ from the movements on a real guitar. It's a good idea for a game, however the same old question keeps coming up as previously mentioned. Why play Guitar Hero when you could take the time to learn real guitar? It's not difficult and you don't get a horrible noise every time you fuck up. You can turn it into an improvisation instead. I only hope it doesn't get so out of hand and overblown that Guitar Hero becomes an instrument of its own. That would just be sad...

It strikes me after watching some YouTube videos of people beating Guitar Hero games on the hardest levels, is that you would seemingly need a certain amount of musical and muscle-motor skills to be able to do that. In other words, the same skills required to play the actual instrument itself, albeit a dumbed-down version of course.
sooooo most if not all of the songs are easyer to play on real guitar (excluding some solo parts). for example, i can't play stricken on expert in guitar hero 3 but i can play it just fine on a real guitar. (same for the trgodoor song in GH2:p)

i think anyone playing the game to pretend to be a rock star should probably reconsider their lives.

This is exactly the bit that puzzles me.

On the other hand, I can see the appeal of GH for casual gaming, which is different.

I can answer number 1.

I can master a Guitar Hero/Rock Band song on Medium in one try. 5 tries on hard. But on actual guitar it takes quite some time.

Add that I have nonmusician friends, so it's fun to get them into playing songs with me.

1. Can you play guitar in real life? If so, does Guitar Hero appeal to you and if so, why?

Yes, ...kinda =P nd yea i've been playin Guitar for 3 years nd itz alwayz fun to rock out to a massive solo on Guitar Hero. But nothing beats nailing the same solo on a real guitar.

Lol. Being a pro at GH would make you good at a 1 string bass guitar with 5 frets and 200 gauge strings. Not much else.
that's pretty much it in a nutshell

Guitar Hero is basically just playing a single string when compared to playing a guitar.

"You play DDR but don't like "dancing," why would you do this?"

It's still just a rhythm game. It's fun playing simon says, I don't know.

I play guitar, and I can pass any song in guitar hero on expert, and 5 star most of them (not TTFAF or Raining Blood, though).

It's just still a game, it's fun, it's a way that I can connect and have fun with my friends who want to do that but don't want to learn the actual instrument because it's a hundred times more work...

The game is not a simulation, it's something else entirely. I guess I like it for the same reason I like Stepmania, which is "I don't know it's a stupid game that's just pressing buttons when the arrows go up there but hell if I know, I enjoy it."

My biggest issue with guitar hero is that half the songs are more difficult/complex in the game than in real life, which is just funny and stupid at the same time.

I kind of wish they made a game that actually taught you an instrument:

Ignore the actual song, but think of the possibilities if guitar hero worked in a similar fashion?

Just watch the first 30 seconds or minute to get the concept.
