Ok, if you're a guitar hero fan, then don't read what I might say because it WILL be offending in one way or the other... I HATE THAT DARN GAME... because of the following reasons...
1. It insists on lazy people to pretend they're playing guitar rather than actually learning it.
2. Half the songs on expert are easier to play in real life than on guitar hero.

3. Retarded fanbase who think it's that big an achievement to have played a song on expert. Well when you play it with a real guitar while correctly following the rythme, then start bragging.

4. Whole concept is lame, don't know how people even got into it, try doing something that will somehow help you in life instead of pretending....

Real guitar gets my vote all the way...
Don't 2 and 3 sort of...you know...contradict each other?

Edit: And 4 can be applied to every video game. I mean, a plumber sliding down pipes and stomping on turtles? Whole concept sounds lame. How will playing this help you in life?

I had always thought one of the hallmarks of the sensible gamer (indeed, the very tenant that all said sensible gamers espouse when confronted by those who seek to demonize gaming as some kind of child desensitizing abomination) was the ability to discern reality from fantasy. To recognize the difference between a game, and a real life activity.

Guitar Hero is a game. It is not a simulation of playing a real guitar (in the same sense that, as a previous poster suggested, Call of Duty is not a simulation of killing soldiers with various firearms). You cannot learn any useful skills from the game, because games are not designed to teach useful skills. It is a game. It entertains first and foremost.

Playing a guitar is not a game. While the activity may be entertaining (to both the participant and the audience), playing a guitar does not meet qualifications necessary to classify it as a game (I.E. to be conducted in a competitive environment, with preset rules which govern how the activity is operated, and standards to determine who "wins" and who "loses" the activity).

Why then, oh humble gamers and guitarist, do you insist on comparing these two completely unrelated activities? To recall a tired cliche, it is comparing apples to oranges. Like comparing Microsoft Flight Simulator to actually piloting a jet plane. Like comparing the playing of Grand Theft Auto to the actual act of Grand Theft Auto.

Have we really lost our ability to discern the difference? Pray that we do not, lest those media watchdogs whom have harped gaming as the medium for moral decay turn out to be accurate in their assessments.

If those who play guitar in real life truly need a justification for why people would dare play a game that vaguely simulates their pastime/professional activity, perhaps they need to re-examine what exactly a game is, and why people would ever bother with such a pleasure. (Hint: it's actually a rather complex topic).

Ok, I've been in a few of these before, so let me put my light on the situation:

-Guitar Hero: It's a game that people can get into around parties without everyone there needing 4 months prior training. Although, some people can be dicks about it.

-Guitar players: Mostly dicks anyway. Can't seem to grasp the concept that it's only a controller shapped like a guitar and not a real guitar. With that said, I guess they're only blowing off a bit of steam since they spend months of practice and a load of cash. Seeing somebody boast how awesome they are playing a song on hard mode might annoy them.

Conclusion: Games are fun. I can crash cars in Burnout but it tends to cost money and lives in real life. Goddamnit, why did god make us so fragile?

I play guitar quite well, and I own GH 1,2,and 3.
I find that guiatr hero introduced me to music that i had never heard of before. A prime example is From GH3. Just because of the first 2 boss battles, I was introduced to Guns 'n' Roses, Velvet Revolver, and Rage Against the Machine. GH has also helped me to play real guitar better, because i try to play some of the songs. Yeah, If GH players think they can play real guitar, just because they can play a song on guitar hero, test them.

Guitar Hero is a game A GAME! dunno why its such a big deal for some if ppl are happy that they complete a game on expert.

I dont beleave people in the army are angry of people who brag that they are good in counterstrike.

Or F1 drivers who are angry of people who brag that they can drive good in a F1 GAME

Its a game! If you can play a quitar and cant play guitar hero fine. If you can play guitar hero but not a real guitar fine.
Totally right!

I've never heard a soldier walk up to the guy who just beat CoD4 on Veteran, "yeah, you think you're tough? Let's go fight some commies and see who gets more"

The NFS player: "You think you're tough? Let's go drag race against the traffic direction down mainstreet"

The real guitar player to the Guitar Hero player: "Yeah, great you can play Through the Fire and Flames on expert, try it on a real guiter."
The Guiter Hero player: "yeah great, you play it on Guitar Hero"
The real guitar player will answer: "why should I, it's just a game"
The Guitar Hero player: "exactly"
this just needs to be posted a few more times till the wankers actually get that guitar hero is a game and just that

Errr, what?

Guitar Hero's a stupid little party game I play occasionally for fun because I can't be bothered putting in the hours of effort to learn how to make a guitar not sound like I'm strangling a cat to death. It's no more similar to the actual guitar than DDR is to dancing, racing games are to driving a car, fighting games are to fighting, RTS' are to actual war strategy, etc.

It's a game and some people get angry at people that are good at it for no real reason. Seriously, from the impression I get whenever I come across a topic about guitar hero ever, I feel that guitar players are a bunch of pricks (note: guitar players are not a bunch of pricks and I'm saying this to make a point)

Seriously, when a Guitar Hero player brags, they're bragging to other Guitar Hero players, and them only (at least the ones who aren't, y'know, retarded). They're bragging to gamers, not musicians.

I'm trying not to be a fanboy here but you really have to look at it from a gamer's point of view, I don't see war veterans getting angry when people brag about their Halo or Counterstrike skills because they know they're only bragging about their skills in a game.

That's all I have to say.

P.S: There are things I don't like/hate about Guitar Hero and it's fans but this topic is about "guitar hero VS real guitar" and thus they do not apply to this topic.

Shiiit... Are you still going on about this..
I agree. I thought of posting that this thread was a dead issue with a pretty clear right and wrong and anyone weighing in now has missed the party and will inevitably be retreading something said two pages ago. And I thought of doing that two weeks ago.
