Overview
GUN is a western Action Adventure game developed by Activision and Neversoft. Who are also
famous for there Tony Hawk series of games. You play the role of Colton White, a frontiersmen in the late 1800's; who is trying to find out the motive behind his fathers murder. Along the way you will meet some memorable characters, abuse some horses, have sex with a hooker, and end up killing a few hundred Indians.
Story
The game has a lot of plot twists and surprises so I won't be going to deep into the story to
avoid spoilers. You begin the game hunting Elk with your father (Ned) to sell to the steamboats travailing the Missouri River. After killing some Quail, Elk, and Wolves. you get attacked by a Grizzly Bear and have to save Ned. Upon completing this task; the steamboat comes by to pick you up. On the boat Ned speaks with a young women about an item while a strange "preacher" talks to you. After the confrontation Ned requests that you keep an eye on him while he speaks with the captain. It is during this scene that you witness the preacher bury an axe into the head of Ned's lady friend. Afterwords, all hell breaks loose. The preacher orders renegades to attack the ship and find the item. You and Ned fend them off but in the end; Ned tells you to "take this token to the Alhambra in Dodge and ask for Jenny". "But I ain't leaving you pa" "God dammit boy that's what I've been trying to tell you. I ain't your father. Now go" and he throws you over board as the ship explodes. (Why the hell he didn't jump is beyond me).
Story Review
I'd have to say this game has one of the best stories of all time. It's gripping, emotional, and will keep you up all night just to find the conclusion to the epic tale. If you love games with stories pick this up. A+
Combat
Combat revolves around shooting your enemies Old Western style with guns ranging from Colt Navy 1851 revolvers to Remington sharpshooters. you can even carve them up like turkey with your knife if they get to close with the press of a button. If things get to hectic take a swig of whiskey to ease your heart and refill your health. Manual aiming may seem like a burden but with a bit of practice you'll be blowing heads off from horseback in no time. You can also roll out of the way and lean over to take shots from cover. If you need some crowd control hurl a whiskey bomb out there and watch the fireworks. You can also activate Quickdraw mode. Witch slows down time and enables Auto lock-on to replicate the skill a true gunslinger would posses. Don't depend on this however as the meter needs to be refilled by killing enemies. Combat on horseback is fun. If your enemies are on the ground just trample them with your horse.
Combat Review
Combat is really good and major work was put into perfecting it. Cover is a bit shaky but it's nothing major.

Controls
Anyone who's ever dipped into the western game genre knows controls are some of the worst ever conceived. You will be glad to know that's not the case here. Even with the absence of mouse control the game runs smooth as butter. Your four primary weapons are automatically hot keyed to be referenced at the press of a button. And strafing is enabled as soon as you draw your weapon. Horseback is smooth and intuitive and combat does the control scheme justice.
Controls review
Controls are virtually the same for all consoles and work pretty well for the most part. Just
some minor problems with rolling. A
Gameplay
Here's the part that makes or breaks a game. You will be happy to know that on gameplay GUN
delivers. Mostly. There is a huge frontier to travel between Dodge City Kansas. And Empire City New Mexico. Horseback riding is fun but you will often find yourself completely screwed if your horse dies as hoofing it on foot is impossible due to the epic size of the land. There are also a variety of side missions to take for money and to increase your stats. Need more horse health? Take a job at the ranch and herd some cattle. Or run a package for the Pony Express. Need more Quickdraw time? Help out the sheriff or the federal Marshall. Need money? Collect a bounty on someone's head or unwind at the poker tables. The stores also sell some useful items. buy a pick axe and mine for gold or a scalping knife and collect some poor saps lid. Buy an ammo belt for your shotgun or a speed loader for your rifle. Missions are well done and range from enforcing the law to breaking out of jail and leading an uprising. Ah but here's the rub. GUN is short. A good player can plow through it in about 12 hours; sidequests and all. There are different difficulty levels ranging from piss easy to being murdered by Jason Vorrhees every 10 seconds but there's no benefit. (Unless you got the 360 version in witch case there are achievements). And when it's done. It's DONE. There is NOTHING more to do and even though the land is huge. There is nothing to find except some gold mines and once you've bought everything it's just useless money. You can kill some buffalo and murder some citizens but there's no real point. (Kill enough people and you will enter a showdown with the town posse. Battle it out or flee and wait for the town to cool off).
Gameplay review
While there are a lot of side quests and the main story is fun. The lack of things to do after words and the waste of space in the land is disappointing. They really could have done more with it. It's still an amazing experience with fun missions that capture the fell of the Old West well. B-
Graphics
Graphics vary between consoles but the 360 has a edge. All 4 look amazing but the PS2 a little behind in the department.
Graphics review
They did well and regardless of the console it still looks great.
I can't give a official score due to multiple platforms But here's a general idea.
PS2: C+
GC: B
Xbox: B+
360:A+
Sound
An epic score that will truly draw you in. Racing across the land on horseback to these ballads composed by an orchestra is amazing. The down home folk tunes of the saloons are good too. The quietness of the showdown is also captured. They even used the real guns for the gunshots in the game. Truly amazing.
Sound Review
Not much here but what little there is was captured perfectly
A+
Replay Value
Good for a few times through.
Overall
GUN is a truly wonderful game that was overlooked by the public. It has an amazing story, soundtrack and design that all works together to create a truly wonderful experience. The only noticeable flaw is the shortness of the game but that shouldn't stop you from picking up a copy out of the bargain bin at your local game store.
Overall Score
B+
Highly recommended. Pick it up because you won't find anything else like it.
Buy it for cheap, or rent it. You can't go wrong with this buried treasure.
First review comments are appreciated. Constructive criticism or as I like to call it. Fancy way of telling what I screwed up on is welcome. Always trying to better myself. Just don't act like a jerk please.
