So you would essentially want to screw over Snipers?

The Gun Sights exist to make the game look sensible and actually like first person shooter. If you were holding a gun and wanted to shoot someone, you would aim down the sites. It shouldn't be any different in a video game.

Even in that pic it just looks like total spray, hitting the cars windscreen, the rear of the other car and everything inbetween. ADS is a little accurate.

Yes, it adds to realism but there has to be some, doesn't there?
Not at all. I prefer some games to be balls to the wall jumping around spray the living crud out of everything around you and making the environment one massive mess shooters to the "realistic" shooters that are constantly being pumped out today.

Both are cool to me, although I think I'm getting more used to looking down the sites on a game.

Honestly I can't believe so many people enjoy aiming down gun sight.

The main reason why I hate it is because when you see an enemy you can't just shoot him right away. NOOOOO you have to waste a fraction of a second to bring up your fucking gun and aim the reticule at the enemy, and in that fraction of a second they do kill you. However in older shooters like Halo or Half-life you can easily aim and shoot the enemy without delay.
That's how they do it in real life. They're trained to keep the gun close to their face so they may aim down the sights at a moment's notice. Only in the most dire situations are they trained to shoot from the ready stance.

The logic behind it is, if you're not aiming down the sights, and you shoot of a few rounds (and most likely miss), you'll reveal your position, and the enemy will already have his sights on you.

Either way, I prefer neither. It totally depends on what kind of shooter you're playing.

It is ard to aim in games where you can't look down the sights in. It also makes multiplayer rather anoying

Was playing Half Life 2 yesterday, you can't look down the sights on the rifles and pistols in that game. It pissed me off, there are people 50 feet away, hip firing is really inaccurate, I went through all my ammo in that section, I didn't like it.

It depends on how Ironsights are implemented. Most games fuck ironsights up completely like MW 2 and its ilk.

A good example of proper and actually helpful Ironsights would be "Red Orchestra:Östfront 41-45" and its upcoming sequel "Red Orchestra:Heroes of Stalingrad"

Vid quality is a bit meh but it explains alot.

Depends on the programming of the game I suppose. There are some games where the iron sights is an absolute joke and the classic "crouch for better accuracy" prevails. On a personal preference, I could care less about ADS, I actually prefer the "zoomed in" part of it, it gives you a better vision of the surrounding area while still offering the same accuracy to effectively take down someone. I say if you want ADS for the game to feel immersive, you should have it so there's no HUD and no ammo count to complete the set, similar to how ArmA does it.

The last FPS that just zoomed in on the crosshair was the last Turok game, and that pissed me right the hell off! Of course I didn't mind that you couldn't zoom in for L4D because the zombies attack you in droves, and you could still zoom in with the rifle.

Yeah pretty much what Frank says in the picture. They put sights on the end for a reason. To aim. I'm all for ADS, especially in modern shooters where they are trying to be pseudo-realistic. Though I don't mind them being missing in arcade shooters like Doom and Serious Sam.

I guess it all depends on the world that we are playing. I can suspend my belief on the whole aiming business in the old Doom games but I wouldn't be able to in a shooter of today set in the modern or even future world. If the game is trying to come off as serious... Then it needs ADS. However if it's trying to come off as just random, physics killing fun... Then really there's no real need for them.

I like both styles depending on the game. Sometimes it is better, othertimes not. In Half-Life 2 for example, firing from the hip complements the fast paced gunfights a lot more.

On an unrelated note, Black has last-gen graphics that look current gen? Really? Black looks pretty crappy to me, graphically. Low-res textures and low-poly models.

Also, I played Black and quite honestly it was not very good.

I like aiming down sights. It adds realism and room for customization eg. Red dot sights. Not that I wont get bodycount and didnt love Black, I just prefer ADS.

Although Frank is actually talking about that silly "gangsta" style of holding a pistol sideways, which means you can't shoot for shit for reasons in addition to the inability to use the sights properly (transfer of force is different, you can't stabilise the pistol with your other hand, etc).

Anyway, the point of iron sights in games is not realism, it's game balance, You gain accuracy at the expense of losing some FOV and movement speed. Make yourself more vulnerable to make yourself more effective at killing a target.

Yeah I know that... I've read the comic. Read most Punisher comics, mainly those by ol'Garth Ennis. I just thought it would be appropriate for this thread. Also, if Franks telling you... Then you do it :D.

I don't really mind if a game used sights or not, both methods work equally well. The only thing I didn't like about the original Black was that everybody took twice as many bullets to kill than they should have. Games that do this in general annoy me.

Man, I love sights. I used to just be all run and gun, but lately I've started lining up my shots more, and I've gotten a whole lot better at FPS once I started being more deliberate about where I shoot.

But it's like a jump button, as soon as I notice it isn't there, it bothers me the rest of the game.

And the zoom in is terrible, it feels weird.

I think Bad Company 2 had a good system, hip firing could work well in close range, but you still had to ADS for long range. The MW2 system is terrible.

I disagree. Aiming down sights just feels so much better. In contrast, zooming in one a crosshair a la Fallout 3 looks stupid.
Exactly how I feel. If I "zoom in", I want it to actually seem like I zoom in. I don't want to the screen to just expand on where I look, I want my character to make some sort of adjustment himself and give me the feeling that I'm focusing on one exact point. Aiming down the sights deliver exactly this and in that, I wish for only more games to do this.

If you don't want to use the iron sights, just don't, I don't know a single game that forces you to use them. Rather then waste that fraction as your say, just fire "from the hip" if it's easier for you
