So for awhile I've been looking for an anime to get into and finally I've decided on the Gundam franchise. Only issue is I have no idea where to start with this behemoth. Any help for a noob or just a good place to start and watch?

I remember watching it on Tsunami. went back and watched the ENTIRE wing series. good story and character dev. start there if you just want something that's not hardcore soap opera or constant battle.

i believe that every series is a new story line, with the exception of seed destiny. Each one is as good as any to start with, i started with G Gundam, then went on to Gundam Seed, and Seed destiny, and now i'm starting on Gundam wing.

Actually, every (almost) Gundam series is a seperate continuum, so you can basicaly start anywhere.
But I have to agree with mcpop9, Wing is a good place to start.
I actually watched them in "reverse" - first 00 then Seed then Wing and so on.

depends are you into hot blood action? I recommend G Gundam

are you into amazing art and fights in EVERY episode? Gundam 00 is your best bet

are you into cool characters and politics? I'm gonna say Unicorn, 0080, and/or Char's Counterattack

AVOID! AVOID! AVOID! GUNDAM SEED IT SUX!

Well the older fans perfer the main series from the Universal Century universe so I guess you can start off with "Mobile Suit Gundam" but it's quite old school. I don't think it's that important since I've been watching Gundam Unicorn (the latest series from the UC timeline) while only knowing summaries of the other series before it.
Alternatively any of the modern shows will do since each shows are unique from one another but they still got the same terms like Gundam and Mobile Suit. So you can made do with shows like Gundam Wing, Gundam Seed (avoid the sequel Destiny), Gundam 00 or the newest shows Gundam AGE.

Turn-A Gundam!!!
Well, you may want to wait until 2012 when a DUB/official release FINALLY gets released State side.

Seriously?
It'll depend on if you can 'take' the older style of animation.
If so?

I'd say 08th MS Team:
Pure cheese, but a fantastic side story to the UC (Gundam 0079, Zeta, ect) universe.

---EDIT---
I'd also suggest tracking down the MOVIES of the older shows.
They tend to go by better, pacing and such, and you don't really 'miss' anything.

I'm currently watching Gundam Wing, but this time actually watching it... Also, Unicorn is only 3eps long, and is still going, and annoys me because I want more.

Is that before or after Gundam Wing in terms of release date?

And I think Unicorn is set in whichever universe Char's Counterattack is set in, so there is some sort of continuation there...

G-Gundam was bad, just dumb dumb bad...

SEED isn't THAT bad - It's SEED: Destiny that's the horrid, horridness.

Gundam 00 is pretty awesome, and so is Mobile Suit Gundam, it has Char!

Gundam Wing is pretty awesome too, the ending is pretty damn epic.

both G Gundam and Wing came out in 97 however G came a couple of months before and where both inferior to Gao Gai Gar that also released the same year

anyways G Gundam is a lot like a fighting game each country has a fighter and there's a world tournament the art is reminiscent of the days of old mecha anime

Wing has better designs and art and turns to be aimed more at girls still its fairly enjoyable

and Unicorn is set apparently lots and LOTS of years after the events of Char's Counterattack which is also part of the original continuity of the Gundam series

I think I'm gonna try G gundam to start with. Whole idea of a tournament sounds suitably badass.

Hmm, okay, thanks for clearing that up for me, though Unicorn is apparently only 3 years after Char's Counterattack, and 27 years before Mobile Suit Gundam F91, so there is a bit of continuity there.

Well, you could start from the beginning with the original Mobile Suit Gundam. Like someone above said though, it's really really old-school. Alternately, you can start with 08th Ms Team. You need little to no knowledge of the lore behind the universe. Just watch it for the story and relatively down-to-earth-but-still-damn-awesome mecha battles.
If you start with any other Universal Century series, you might be slightly confused if you don't drop by Gundam Wiki and look up some of the terms they talk about. As you start further and further down, you'll also lose backstory.

If you want to watch a single series instead of following an entire universe, then you can probably start with Gundam Wing. Most kids from the 90's watched it as their first Gundam show on Toonami.
Or Gundam 00, which has essentially the same story concept but that particular universe is a bit darker and reacts accordingly (easiest comparison is between their Pure-Pacifist Princesses. One becomes Queen-of-the-World, the other is mostly helpless to the plot). The scale of the mecha battles and general polish is much higher in 00.

As many have stated before me, it really depends on what you're looking for.

For a hot blooded rock-em sock-em check out G Gundam (Gundam's DBZ)
For a melodramatic soap opera, check out Gundam Wing
For a newer interpretation of the original series, check out Gundam SEED
For an elite team trying to change the world, check out Gundam 00
For a serious war epic, I recommend the original Gundam series (also known as Universal Century)

I personally started out watching Gundam Wing while it was on tv and didn't enjoy the original until I matured enough to appreciate what was going on. I didn't watch Seed until I got to college and found it fairly enjoyable (though Seed Destiny was full of disappointment). Know that nearly all of Gundam has merits and there really isn't any wrong series. Some just hit on deeper levels than others.

My ardent recommendation goes to the original series, but you might want to check out the OVAs to see what you're getting into (08th MS Team is a personal favorite, but there's also 0080: War in a Pocket)

Personally, id say start with the first, Kido Senshi Gundamu. It genesis and the first in the series, so it really lays down the foundation for what the Gundam Series is, and what the Gundam itself is. Besides which, its the first series in the UC timeline so its sort of the basis for all other series which live on the UC timeline such as 0080 and 0083, 08th Mobile Suit Team, Zeta Gundam and so on.

Start with any one of them because they are completely unrelated and they make no sense whatsoever, but there are alot of cool robot fights and of course crotch shots.

You might start off with older ones tho not to spoil your eyes on the new visual feasts.

This thread has inspired me to watch Gundam 00 again :)

Also, I'd start with Gundam Wing if I were to get into Gundam for the first time.

I have only seen a few but I will just list the ones I know.
Gundam Wing is really good.

If you want multiple series in the same universe so they do have continuing canon watch the Universal Century stuff. Here is a list of some of them in order.
Mobile Suit Gundam (There is also a 3 part compilation movie version of the show)
08th MS Team (Really Good from what I remember)
0080 War in the Pocket (Really Good)
0083 Stardust Memory (Never saw it.)
Not entirely sure on the order of the next stuff but I think it is...
Zeta
ZZeta (Zeta 2? I don't actully know it's name.)
Unicorn Gundam
there is also a few movies that go between and at the end of the UC Timeline

G Gundam is also good. It is an over the top fighting tournament series.

I personally wasn't a fan of Gundam Seed, so I wouldn't recommend that one, but I should watch it again to see if I would actually like it.

In short I would recommend the early Universal Century stuff, Gundam Wing, and G Gundam. Didn't really like Gundam Seed. The others I haven't seen.
