My favorite anime ever, I felt like discussing it so I maded a thread. What did you think of it? I've seen split opinion on the English dub (which I watched) and I don't see any problems with it, but hey opinions. I don't think a series has ever managed to both make me cry then immediately afterwards give a giant FUCK YEAH.
Main examples being Episodes 8 and 26
Episode 8 is when Kamina dies. Many tears. But episode 26 also hit me, when in an alternate dimension, Kamina comes back to help Simon. His speech about your universe just gave me man tears. It was beautiful.

The soundtrack is awesome, the fights are awesome... everything is just awesome!

So yeah peoples, what did you think of Tengen Toppa.... GURREN LAGANN!

Just who the hell do you think we are!?

I think it's ok, but I'm actually quite sick of everyone acting like it's the greatest thing ever (though this has overall stopped since other shows have taken that place for a while). It's definitely above average and pretty good, but it's not my cup of tea. I'm more of a Real robot type of guy.

Also, I'm sick of everyone thinking "Just who the hell do you think I/we am/are" is from that. It's actually from Godannar, which came out 4 years before Gurren Lagann did.

Yeah I'm part of the crowd who think it's the greatest anime ever :p Well ok that anime is in my top 10 favourite anime of all time and for a good reason.
Seriously there has been no anime like it that get me pumped/ hyped up from the sheer epicness that happened in it. Not even the recen Kill La Kill had topple it but I would put that anime in second place.

Name me another anime that make you go "HOLY SHIT!!!????" from this scene alone-

I had rewind that scene so many time when I first watched it!

I love Gurren Lagann. I sort of prefer the English dub as well, badass speeches are better in your own language as long as the voice actors don't fuck it up. Also English Kamina is great, his Episode 8 performance was amazing

While his Giga Drill Breaker shout wasn't quite as epic as the original dub, if you listen to it in context he portrays the spirit of a dying man's last ditch effort to secure the battle perfectly. Just listen to how he pronounces "Break" it's heartbreakingly amazing.

Manly tears.

I like Kill la Kill more I think though, just barely. It manages to pace itself better than TTGL with little to no slowing down in pace (unlike the first few post timeskip TTGL episodes) and there's no total dud episodes that they had to tank in quality because of budget constraints (TTGL's infamous Episode 4) and most important of all...

You can't really be sick of something being more well known than something else.

Well you can, but whatevs.

The final 3 episodes alone make it worth watching.

I've replayed the entire Multi Dimensional Labyrinth scene so many times. The part when Kamina is giving his speech to Simon, then Libera me From Hell starts playing, then Simon starts turning into Gurren Lagann then he flies away and rescues everybody and IT'S ALL SO GOOD OMG

Actually you can, in fact it happens pretty much every summer when some new anime becomes the new big thing that everyone is into and can't get enough of. Sometimes it's ok, but not that good (Code Geass), sometimes it's good but way overhyped (Attack on Titan), and sometimes it's legitimately a bad show (Sword Art Online). Simple fact is, it happens every year, and Gurren Lagann was it for the year it came out.

Except that Gurren Lagann came out 7 years ago and people are still into it. Very much.

I loved KlK but it didn't quite live up to the sheer godliness of Gurren Lagann. The final battle just kind of... ended.

Oh jeez, I love this anime so much.
The speeches give me chills every time and I just can't get enough of quoting each one of them in any semi appropriate situation.
As I watched it for the first time it intoxicated me with badassery and I hadn't so pumped by an anime since the original Dragon Ball, It was amazing.

Not really, despite what it may look like, things have REALLY died down for it, and compared to how popular it once was it's a shadow of what it used to be. This is exactly what happened to the big summer show which became very popular in the west each year, and unless they release more series or movies about it, its popularity will continue to go threw the half-life it has been for 7 years now until it becomes a fairly obscure one most who are not massive fans of the genre will have never heard of unless they where fans at the time, and even then it'll probably be mostly forgotten by them as well.

This isn't me saying anything about the quality of the show either, this is just how the history of the medium goes, because unless it does like Evangelion with a reboot movie series, or like Gundam or Macross with new series all together, the franchise will decline in popularity. This is just how it goes in the community, and hey, give it 20 years, you'll be able to feel like a hipster when you tell kids about this show none of them have ever heard of.

I see what you mean. Truthfully I only really got into anime last year (Well I watched DBZ religously as a kid) and TTGL was one of the first things I watched, so I guess I got into it kind of late way after it's popularity boom.

I understand. I actually got into anime right when the popularity boom started, so I got caught in a bit of sensory overload from it. I've learned to cope though, so the past few years I barley notice it now when a new thing becomes massively popular, and it's more of an annoyance on message boards then anything else.

You'll find that there are plenty of great shows and movies to find, you just need to know where to look (though clearly you've already found someplace which has it).

I fear Gurren Lagann may be suffering the same fate as Attack on Titan for me. I see it being overhyped so much and when I finally watch it. It fails to live up to expectations. Same thing will probably happen to Kill La Kill.

The hype is real.

In fact it's unreal.

But it's real.

There's only one way to find out!

And Gurren Lagann is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than Attack on Titan. Though I like both.

I loved it, but I'm a fan of that group to begin with.

I love Kill la Kill slightly more, though. I think it has more going for it in terms of story and characters. Not a knack against Gurren Lagann, mind you, I just prefer Kill la Kill in the story/character department.

Yeah I know what you mean but at the same time, as much action as there is in KLK it's primarily about the characters and how they develop, significantly more so after Nui makes her first appearance. The action is awesome but it's never strictly *about* the action if that makes sense. It's about what the action means to the characters fighting, it's one of my favourite types of storytelling and character development and isn't used nearly enough in Western shows.

Another random point is remember when Gurren Lagann did a few character deaths to show you it ain't messing around? Yeah KLK is worse, it's ruthless, it pulls no punches. In fact it will likely just punch you again for good measure.

If you want action in Episode 24 I will point you towards the 5/6/7 minute mark. I've watched that scene on repeat so many times! It's downloaded onto my phone just to take out and watch at random points in time.

"AHAHAHAHAHAHA *splat*..... Eh?"

The final episode of KLK is an exercise in how many lines sound like total idiotic nonsense when taken out of context (seriously try watching it with that mindset, it's hilarious) but it's so damn effective within the anime. It's one of the best endings I have seen in a long time.

"Every girl outgrows her sailor outfit. Go and wear clothes cuter than I could ever be."

I cried. I seriously did. Not even manly tears just straight up crying.

I do enjoy its over the top nature, if there is one thing the Japanese are the best in the world at, its doing something awesomely over the top. In related news, this seems like a good place for this

Maybe it was because I had nobody to watch it with, but it wasn't as incredibly awesome as everyone told me it was. It was great overall, but it started out pretty weakly with 2 trash episodes (4 and 6 were shoestring budget filler and hot spring fanservice filler respectively). Asides from Simon, Yoko (Viral and Kamina to a lesser degree) most of the characters were pretty forgettable. I still think it was really good overall, and the final battle was one hell of a climax.

Maybe I am not a real human being, but Kamina didn't inspire all that much and his death didn't bring tears to my eyes. Am I a bad person?

I thought the dub was excruciating. Absolute mood killing garbage- BUT having said that, I find it the same with all English dubs, so add plenty of salt and move on.

The Aniplex subtitling was fricking awful as well. Black Order did a much, much, much better job... But that's usually the case with official subs too. Eugh.

To the series itself, of course I loved it (I've had the flag for as long as I've been here on the Escapist, haven't I). I could never quite get behind Simon though... Still, it's in my top 5.
