Rome/Medieval 2 Total War.

The variety in the factions, the politics, the bloodshed and the music.
Sploosh.

Suffice to say I'm really looking forward to Rome2 and its improvements in the AI, politics and diplomacy.

Let's talk for a while about Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale. Actually, here's an image that sums up everything about it:

tl;dr: I don't normally play sim games of any kind, and particularly not business management sims. I bought this game anyway. If that doesn't mean anything to you, it also comes with a demo on Steam so you can see for yourself what makes this game so amazing.

Edit: Thanks DoPo

Rather then reaching for my bag of "memory lane" games, I'm going to mention something recent... as in just yesterday.

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West

First thing that should be noted is the inspiration for the game. They derived concepts and characters from the old Chinese story "Journey to the West". Some folks may already be familiar with aspects to the story if they have ever watched Dragonball (first series) since many concepts and characters are taken straight from Journey to the West as well (and given some unique flavour). In fact, I'd say many people who played Enslaved would have thought it was inspired by Dragonball entirely due to certain similarities, like the Brutish but lovable "monkey like" male (Goku=Monkey), tech savvy but not-so-brave girl (Bulma=Trip) and, at later points, a "Pig" (Oolong=Pigsy).

[img width= 70%]http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uVTDLOZYImI/Tcw8X4IJ98I/AAAAAAAAACo/XwtK2UUFHyk/s1600/Enslaved_NinjaMonkey+%25281%2529.jpg[/img]
Note: Monkey appears to be of an alternative design, possibly an early concept.

Of course all these characters have their origins in Journey to the West, in the form of Tripataka the travelling monk (Trip/Bulma, though female, are contextually similar to the monk, though its a rather loose similarity), Sun Wukong (The monkey king) and Zhu Bajie (or Pigsy, same as the character from Enslaved).

Second thing that should be noted is that its post apocalyptic. But unlike many games of its time and before, it was the first to run with the Urban Jungle concept for Post Apocalyptic imagery. The game has an amazing amalgam of Bright and colourful trees, flowers coupled with warming bright light and blue skies, in contrast the to dilapidated ruins, rusted metals and gaping wholes of earthy brown left in the wake of incredibly destructive forces.

The biggest selling point for this game is character. Aside from the world which has ample amounts of character and despite using a lot of done to death character types and falling into several traps of lazy writing, the characters are acted out and played very humanly. Certain expressions they pull, the pacing of dialogue, the way they animate when interacting with each other... its impressive, as good as, if not better then, the Uncharted series quality for character interactions. The only downside is that these interactions are rather few throughout the game, possibly only having 20-30 cutscenes in total. Voice work is really good, definitely a highlight, but considering there are only 5-6 voiced characters in the entire game it would have been pretty poorly to let the dialogue slide.

Animation in general is amazing too, from the way characters navigate the world (especially monkey) to the lovely flourishes Monkey adds to combat. There are a few hiccups, namely jerky transitions (Going from a run to a jump doesn't feel as fluids as it should) and the occasional bit of lag related interference (animations failing to perform properly or doing other strange things), but they are sparing enough or mild enough to look past for the most part. I would also like to add that, in combat, I believe Enslaved has pulled off the greatest form of "kill cams" I've ever seen, though it only happens for one type of attack.

Speaking of which, combat is very simple... possibly to a fault. If the game was any longer then it was (more on that later) I might have made a fuss about the relatively limited approach to combat, but for what it is, it feels solid, fluid and satisfying. Those looking for a serious challenge or something deep and intricate will not find it here, but one can't fault it for flow... combat never overstays its welcome or halts progress through the game and it helps to break up the pacing of what is essentially a pure-blood action-adventure game.

The story is good, its engaging and interesting but nothing mind blowing or unique. Its also short... too short. Without spoiling anything, it hits the end when I felt like it should only be coming into the final stages. I don't think I've ever felt "Budget cuts" or "harsh deadline" this bad. It's not dissatisfying per say, it ends on a "For you to think about it" level of ambiguity and wraps up the core drive of the story for the most part, but it just feels like there should be way more to it then we get. Its hard to describe as It isn't "Awww, I wanted more" and more "Is that all? Oh..."

Beyond that everything else is somewhat minor, so I'll bullet point them:

*Graphics are great at a distance, but textures are pretty awful up close... and they like close ups for some reason. Also, texture loading is an issue.

*Music fits the game like a glove, I'm crap at describing music but this game does it well.

*Game can get laggy on PS3, but it doesn't affect precision in combat.

*Navigating the world is fun but its, more often then not, push forward and hit X to continue. They throw hazards in occasionally to add some peril but its just a matter of timing. Its never a chore though and you never feel like its overdone and rarely feels like its been used to pad out the length of a sequence.

*There are RPG elements. They work, but aren't innovative or interesting on their own merits.

This game is a diamond in the rough. It has all the ingredients for a spectacular game, but only manages to be a novel experience. Its worth experiencing but not revolutionary or ground breaking. Its different... but abundantly safe at the same time. Its also dead in the water since it sold like ass. If you find a copy now it will likely be cheap. I got my copy for ?5, so if you want a cheap but cheerful game, get this, it shouldn't disappoint.

Now, I hate trailers as they are very misleading more often then not, but fuck it, it shows some of the game in action... just don't buy into the hype its generating... also its a stupid fucking trailer.

I adore Shadow Hearts. I played it on a fluke and my line of thoughts as I was playing it went something like this.

This is pretty ok, a pretty decent RPG with funny moments and alright graphics, and a good battle system...

Hey, this music is pretty great, and there's some wonderful character moments and that's an interesting mechanic...

wow, that's some creepy monster design, this is pretty awesome...Hang on, is one of my characters MATA HARI!? With a rocket launcher and a mobile phone in the 1900s!? WHAT!? And then there was a fencing vampire called Keith.

And that was awesome. Really, really awesome.

Ok. Fucking TimeSplitters. ************. Say hello to Goldeneye's hotter sister.

Fuck playing realistic shooters like a pussy.
In this game you travel across time to save the universe from things.
Why? Who gives a shit!
The important thing is it controls like jizz, and is funnier than fucking tutu wearing panda on a unicycle.
The weapons range from pistols, submachine guns, to fucking double wielding flare guns and tools that shoot lightning.

You want story? Well fuck story. There is one, but sexy people shouldn't care. It's all the about the multiplayer. No, no 360 no scoping online raging bullshit. The sweetest fucking splitscreen ever. You also unlock a pant tightenly good arcade mode full of challenges and unlockables.

You can kill a monkey in a brick in a chinese restaraunt whilst playing as a snowman that walks by sitting on a magic carpet!
It's got monkeys zombies, robots, and aliens.

And all this without even jump button.
Jump buttons are for pussies.
You can find any of the 3 games for about TWO MEASELY QUID.
Pick up the last one, Future Perfect, if you don't think you're man enough to handle games that didn't even give aiming reticules.

Since the perfection that is Persona 4 has already been taken i'll have to go with the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney trilogy.

Interesting cases, great twists, awesome characters, hilarious comedy and an amazing soundtrack

You can manually specify the width and height of an image by adding those in the img tag, like so (427 x 225 px)

you can also use whatever dimensions you wish (200 x 200 px)

But even easier, you can specify just one - width or height and the image will scale proportionately (width 400px)

And finally, you can use percentages, too (width 25%)

OT: Well, I think I've talked a lot about Bloodlines on these forums. Oh, if anyone didn't catch it, I love the game. But let's try something different for a change - my other major passion in video games:

Oh yeah, baby! Consider this, "balancing of the scales of fanboy blabbing" - I have to make up for all the Bloodlines talk I've done.

So, why play any LoK game? The story is fucking amazing, that's why. An interesting, well thought out narrative that is full of plot twists. And they don't get old, so you wouldn't be rolling your eyes saying "What, again? *sigh*". Also, be prepared, since the story includes time travel, you would might need to lie down before trying to get the bigger picture. Oh, if you just play the game it's fine, trying to make a deeper analysis of what's happening may give you a slight headache. A good headache, though - it comes from having to actually think and understand stuff. But as for the story itself - without going into the bigger picture (it would take too much text to make an explanation that does it justice) it starts off with Kain - a nobleman who gets murdered in Blood Omen 1. He is brought back as a vampire, so he can have revenge. But is soon dragged into trying to save all of Nosgoth (i.e. the world). Which he does, to a degree.

Then comes Soul Reaver, here - have an intro
[youtubelFiLNc46jAM]
Nosgoth is damned and is a blighted wasteland. Over the whole Soul Reaver arc (that is: Soul Reaver 1 and 2, plus Defiance), things work similar as with BO - a quest for revenge that grows into the struggle to save the world - undamn it on an even grander scale than before. Invisible puppeteers, however, want to make sure everything falls. It comes with loads of revelations, unmaskings and mystique. A chase through time to fulfil one's destiny.

Now, it should be noted that there exists a game, called Blood Omen 2. It is...the lowest point in the series. If you want good story, skip BO2, you could read the plot synopsis online, but playing the game is awful. OK, to be fair, the stealth kills are fun and brutal and the boss fights are interesting. Also, has Simon Templeman there to voice Kain. But other than those, the game is a waste of time - frustrating, tedious and boring. That's before mentioning the many glitches it comes with. Oh, and the plotholes, too - LoK has always been about the tight strong plot - destroying that was...not well received.

But other than that, the games offer an amazing story, so it's well worth getting them. And, hey, GOG recently added the whole Soul [https://secure.gog.com/gamecard/legacy_of_kain_soul_reaver] Reaver [https://secure.gog.com/gamecard/legacy_of_kain_soul_reaver_2] saga [http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/legacy_of_kain_defiance] on their site! BO, you can find on PSN also on an abandonware website for PC. And here [http://www.gamefaqs.com/ps2/914777-legacy-of-kain-defiance/faqs/25247] is an awesome plot guide for all the games. To be fair, you don't really need to play them - since the story is told in the cutscenes, you could just watch those (easy to find) and you'd have missed very little. However, you should totally buy the games, in case that proves to Square-Enix (who bought Eidos - the previous publisher) that they should finally greenlight another game to finish the series. There was one in the works, but it got shut down by Eidos.

Finally, last few times I mentioned LoK on this site, I got people telling me about a rumour that a reboot is in the works. So, I'll say this now - I know that. I was one of the people who propagated it here. But E3 came and went and there is still no other info, like the countless other rumours I've seen.

Damn it!
Both Persona 4 and Ace Attorney have been taken, guess I'll go with Ghost Trick.
Its what I consider a perfect game, I can't think of a single thing wrong with it, brilliant characters, intriguing and well told story along with its own unique and extremely entertaining gameplay.
Its also the only game I game where I can't tell which aspect of it is better, the story or the gameplay, in every other game you would have one that was definitively better but in this case both aspects of the game are so well done and do such a good job of complementing each other I honestly can't tell.

I like Too Human. I think it has a a lot of great ideas that should be in more games.

.The salvage system was brilliant. instead of hauling everything to a merchant, you could turn items into money. You could even set the game to auto-salvage all the loot that's not up to your standards.

.There are so many opportunities to make your enemies hurt each other, it's not even funny. You can hurl a fierce attack at the elemental in the middle of a crowd or watch the enemies friendly fire themselves to death. it never gets old.

.Human characters have high customization with runes and can make characters insanely powerful in just about any area.
you could roll a commando with maxed ranged stats to mulch everything from half a mile away and kill bosses in seconds

Roll a Berserker with maxed melee stats to shred through enemies even faster.

Roll a champion and spec damage, HP, armor, and fire rate/attack speed to become omnipotent as fuck.

.up to 4 different tricks up your sleeve
1. robot spider that can be spec'd to do anything from gun down enemies to giving you an invulshield.
2. send the spirit of your melee weapon out to demolish enemies and give you free combos.
3. battle cries that act as superbuffs
4. AOE attacks that can nuke entire rooms full of enemies

.And even with all that, the game maintains it's challenge becuase many enemies still pose a threat in their own way. Even Dark Souls gets piss easy by the time you're a mid level with high resistance to everything and using overpowered pyro spells.

Thanks for the tips.

Great series, LoK, I've gushed about it before, and if my Avatar isn't telling enough, have a sweet spot for the series Title Character. But the original writer (Amy Hennig), I think, is done with the series (pure rumour mill shit, I can't locate the article I heard it in but it was her own words if I recall). If another game comes out it could very well feel off, much like Blood Omen 2 felt off (gone off) as it was penned by someone who really couldn't get the feeling right...

Did you know that Blood Omen 2 is considered by some, not sure if it is canon, to be an alternative time line created by the events in Defiance? Seems like a clever way to eliminate the influence without ignoring the presence of that shitty game

That said, if the stars align and they greenlight another game with Amy Hennig at the helm, my wallet is ready for it.

As an aside, you know what I liked about Soul Reaver... well one thing in particular? It was a vampiric post apocalyptic high fantasy action/adventure game. How many games can say that line and STILL be taken seriously.

No one ever reads these threads. They just rush to post their own thing. So I read ALL the posts. Even the really long ones.

But what the hell! You're all console players! There are like, 2 PC games here. I am not well pleased. These choices are meaningless! Meaningless, I say!

She left Crystal Dynamics and made Uncharted. I don't think she's "done" with the series, as much as she just can't work on them any more, being part of another game studio. Then again, she might have mentioned something I missed.

It is an alternate history - influenced by the end of SR2. Well, and Defiance, to a point - the temporal distortion at the end of SR2 did create BO2, Defiance just traced the events that led to it. And it did that because of BO2's plot holes. In effect Amy Henning and co had to go and fix everything. They didn't manage, though (Vorador being not decapitated) but it managed to do what they can.

In essence...I don't think it needs a spoiler: Raziel was meant to kill Kain and the history would just go and repeat itself in an infinite loop - everything leading to that outcome (remember, history in LoK is not linear - it merely has always been that way, if there was a a "beginning", the whole thing would have been impossible). However, Kain and Raziel managed to change everything. Twice. Each time, history reshaped itself to accommodate the changes. The second time, it went too far, sjust as Raz says "Behind Kain?s eyes, I could see new memories blooming and dying, as history labored to reshuffle itself around this monumental obstruction... And I could see by the dawning horror on his face that perhaps we had strained history too far this time... ". The new memories mentioned are what happened in BO2. Hence why Kain suddenly knows about the Hylden, during the course of history changing, they managed to escape and he met them. In the original timeline, he probably figured that there were other things that influenced the world behind the scenes but since BO2 hadn't happened, he didn't get to do meet the Hylden first hand. Or at least, not until way later he probably didn't learn their name.

By the way, here [http://www.dcabdesign.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=143] is a Q&A with one of the guys behind LoK who talks about BO2. He wasn't part of the team, he only consulted them...and yeah, he sheds some light about why BO2 is...what it is. Also briefly skims over Dark Prophecy, and if you haven't seen it [http://nosgoth.yuku.com/topic/5561#.UDecq6PPzPo], that's the cancelled game I talked about.

Fuck that, I can't think of another good game with vampires in. Where you play as vampires, even, and they have a rich history and stuff. Well, aside from Bloodlines and Redemption but those aren't in the same league as LoK. And now let's try to think of another post apocalyptic high fantasy that's good...yeah, I don't think there are many. I'm pretty sure there aren't any others that combine both elements.

Well, LoK is on the PC. Also, consoles, yes, but I only have PC and I've played everything - all 5 games. And I saw 3 other games on PC for sure - Portal, Borderlands and Total War (the poster mentioned Rome and Medieval, actually), so there are at least 4 PC games, if you count them as series, rather than titles.

I'm not the best at describing, but I'll give it a shot.

This game is nothing short of brilliance. The campaign is brilliant; every individual mission is awesome. The multiplayer is addicting, the music is awesome, and the graphics were great -- for the time, at least... one of the best, if not, THE best FPS I've ever played.

Like I said, not the best at describing. I do not do the game justice with my poor description.

Banjo Kazooie. That series is by far my favorite series of all time. If you haven't played it you owe it to yourself to buy a Nintendo 64 and play it the way it was meant to be played. After you beat or play a few hundred hours of it without beating it, get Banjo Tooie, because that game is even better.

Because I'm an indecisive prick I'm going to talk about a couple of games.
First is a game I've only started playing recently and still haven't quite finished but I feel the need to talk about it anyway. Thief 2 is a game with a very self explanatory title and is just simply really good. The stealth actually works well although the guards do seem a bit short sighted, and there's nothing quite like listening in to conversations or reading through people's diaries, finding out their dirty secrets without them ever knowing you were there.
Next is Dungeons of Dredmor, a more recent indie dungeon crawler roguelike thing. The gameplay sounds pretty standard on paper but it's extremely funny and almost worth it solely to see the variety of skills on offer (for example, you can play as a Communist Vegan Pirate Vampire). There's also quite a lot of fun to be had trying different skill combinations and seeing what works best because I assure you, you will die a lot!

I WUV Metroid! Especially Prime.
I love the solitude, I love the exploration, and I REALLY love that sense of power every time you pick up a new ability!
