I remember playing long sessions on certain mmos a while back with my cousin and a few friends i recently made online, there were a few girls in my guild and i remember a few grinding sessions where usually talkative guys either go completely silent or suddenly have to leave when they discover that one of the people they've been grinding and chatting with for the last hour was a girl.

I know it sounds ridiculous, i thought so too at first until one guy only started wanting to grind when i was alone XD i asked him up front if that was the reason and set up a kinda trap (i let my guildie in on it and she basically hid and was ready to pop up when a dropped the pm)
he denied it and got back to his usual chatty self when i gave the signal and she comes out swinging (verbally, and she didn't hold back on the fem talk .. lol she's usually not like that) "hey boys, how you been" ... she didn't finish typing her fourth sentence when **return scroll** he was goooone XD

didn't log back in for a while too, i was genuinely fascinated XD ... i mean ... it's avatars man .. do you guys know anyone who's shy even online behind a toon???

Could be worse. The guys could get overly-chatty to try and impress the girl. Yes it sounds stupid as hell, but I've seen(or rather, heard) it happens quite a bit on Xbox Live.

Wow. That's really, really bad. In public, I'm pretty quiet around people I don't know. Online, it doesn't bug me at all to converse with anyone of any gender. So, I'm neither one of these people and I don't know one either.

I'm horribly shy around other women online and I'm a girl, I always expect them to be really bitchy and competative.

Exactly, you play your role and have fun .. it's why everyone else is logged in ... not sure why people feel that way on a game

I'm the same online as I am in public...not too good.

I swear I need a friend by my side everywhere to give me enough confidence to say something without feeling awkward. And this is to both girls and guys, but mainly girls.

Don't see why because he's not talking face to face. I'm a pretty shy guy in public but online I'm a chatterbox don't know why.

It isn't just an avatar, just like words on a screen aren't just pixels. They represent ideas, concepts, beliefs, and these things really do affect you at a subconscious level.

Weird people are weird. There is no negative consequences of talking, so there is no reason not to talk.

At least it's not a series of dickhead's immediately and obnoxiously flirting with the first female they find. This is rather odd though, I generally post on the Escapist totally oblivious as to the gender of people I'm quoting/talking to, hell I've at least on two occassions done the this^ quote and erroneously adressed the user as male when something gender nuetral would have sufficed (my bad, there). Your point sums it up perfectly it's just an avatar, it's a series of words dispensed by a faceless person, I don't see what they have to be so nervous about.

I've never seen or heard of that kind of scenario. For girls that I've played with in groups or guilds people usually don't react much at all or start joking/hitting, but anything but leave or go silent at the immediate prescence of a female. Do these people you play with talk to girls, ever?

I have a friend like that. and when he fails miserably, he stops talking and then leaves my party. i'm just like "chill dude, it's just a girl"

Text speak I am just fine with talking to girls, but if its over a mic I often trip over my words. I actually tend to shy away more online then I would in real life. I guess thats because I am more self conscious about my speaking skills then I am my looks, and In real life I know how to look "cool" while tripping over my words.
