"Man! Man! If you're a man! Then you are a man!"

Anime referances to the side i really don't know. Growing up the way i did i have an old-fashioned view of what makes a man manly. So i won't say anything more than that i think a man should be strong enough to tackle his problems on his own. I cut off there with the fear of inducing flame.

An 18 year old with testicles. That is a man.

This. So much this. Also, to expand slightly on my previous statement that is what makes you biologically a man. The term is to identify the sex of an individual, nothing more. They are a man, whether or not they are a good or earnest person is completely down to their characteristics and actions. Neither of which I attribute or associate with gender.

Personally I find this to be a biological question, since I care little for gender stereotypes.

Voluntarily taking up responsibility. And having some sort of facial hair. That's what I think of when I hear 'Manly Man'.

Having a knob may make you a man, but it'll take more than that to be a manly man.

Having a Y-chromosome, and, in most cases, male genitals. Punching sharks.
That is about it.

Erm... I'm short, skinny and have longer hair than all the girls I know. I'd choose a strong friendship over a fleeting relationship and I make sure to consider first the feelings of others before the context which has caused them. In support of one in despair, I always take the traditionally female stance in language use of providing support as opposed to searching for solution. But I'm still a man. Who, honestly, gives a shit? The gift of sentience has provided humans the ability to follow their own path, negating the stringent effects of gender-stereotypes. Natural masculinity will make itself apparent in due course: A woman I find attractive will turn my blood to fire and a threat to my close friends will turn me violent. Why question and search for definition when we need only use introspection to find our answers. Masculinity will change to suit the world into which it is born.

...I have seen every episode of Gilmore Girls. But that doesn't mean I like Cannibal Corpse any less.

I have often judged manliness on one's ability to write their name in the snow . . .

Thing is, if the whole population is moving away from what we percieve as masculinity, perhaps it does it for a reason and in the end the world will be better for it? No I'm not suggesting Intelligent Design here. I'm suggesting that humans are adapting to their environment and usually that does happen for a reason.
no, this stuff is causing birth defects.
Okay fine if it's a chemical, hormone or something similar that is causing the overal effect, yes that would be bad. But if it's human adapting to the changing cultural environment, it's just something that is supposed to happen.

Well, a Y chromosome would be a good start. I don't know, I'm more interested in what it means to be a *human*, or the nature of our very sapience. Gender shouldn't matter anymore, except in that one particular area.

Having male genitals, and being able to wrestle a bear helps. But if you need to learn how to 'Man Up' let me point you to this instructional song.

1 Corinthians 13:11
"When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me."
To me, being a man is taking responsibility for your actions.

To all the... very intelligent people saying that a penis, and chromosome make you a man, what about transsexuals? transgendered people? intersexed people? That's pretty damn offensive to 3 groups of people... I have male genitalia, but I'm a woman

And to be a man, is the same way a woman is a woman, by self-identifying, and by being comfortable in your masculinity/femininity. Gender roles are bullshit, and are just harming equality, and are persuading small-minded people to buy certain products. Not to mention perpetuating negative stereotypes and sexism.

HURRRRR A WILLY

Seriously though I think a man is defined primarily by how he treats women. A man to me is a gentleman, he does not lay a hand on a woman unless defending himself and he certainly does not demean her by calling her things like ***** and ****. I think acting as a gentleman takes confidence, self respect and self control, things I think are important in a man.

I guess I consider myself to be quite masculine. I've always got facial hair, I like cars, violence, and heavy music, I've been living almost exclusively off alchohol for the last week, I've got one pair of shoes, one bottle of bodywash, and one bottle of shampoo, and in the last 24 hours I've had casual sex with 2 different girls.

I'm pretty sure somewhere there's a salsa dancing drag queen who goes to the gym every day to make sure his ass looks fabulous in skinny jeans with more testosterone than me. Manliness is definitely not completely contingent on biology.

Now whether it's a good or bad thing is completely subjective. I didn't go "hey I'm going to do this because I want to be a man!" I just don't see the purpose of having multiple types of the same soaps, like alchohol, etc. Nobody should act disingenuously for the sake of society because that shit just makes you miserable. Plus if everyone was exactly the same life would be boring. I may jokingly chastise my friend for using a loofah, but if he didn't use a loofah that joke would have brought no pleasure to me and he would probably smell slightly worse. The world has a place for manlymen and girlymen. Now if you'll excuse me I have to pour motor oil on myself to wash the gay off me from that last paragraph.

f*ck gender roles you have to be born a man to be a man it's that simple.
On a side note, let's say someone is transgender. Would they see this statement as progressive or conservative?

I not only have no answer to this question, I refuse to think of one. Fuck. Traditional. Gender roles.

To be a decent human being however, you have to not be a coward, be willing to stand up for yourself, be willing to help others if it doesn't hurt you significantly and well... just generally don't be a spineless dick and your a decent person imo.
