Ok, so I've heard a bit about a game called Guild Wars 2 for a long while now and it usually sounds something like "OMG gonna be best game evar!!1!!!" or "This game is awesomesause!" and treat it like the second coming of Christ. So, naturally, I decided to take a look to see what all the fuss is about. I made a quick youtube search and came across this video.

And honestly, I'm underwhelmed. I mean it looks GOOD, but not amazing.

First they show us the Biography part of the game's character customization. Doesn't seem to do anything except making the character keep describing herself as cunning over and over in the opening cinematic, but that's to be expected considering it's such a short demo.

Speaking of the opening cinematic, it looks cool, but it doesn't explain a lot. For example, even though I would be playing as one if I played this demo, I have no idea what a norn is. From what I could gather they are humans, or some sort of human-esque race, who was chased away by some ice dragon and who appreciate the sport of hunting. That's pretty much it. I also don't know anything about the world or the place I start in. A little context would be nice.

The demo then jumps right into the game and I have to admit that it looks beautiful. Love the artstyle and the graphics are great for a MMO. Then again Age of Conan also looked great back in its day...

Not long afterwards, the player runs towards an NPC with a speechbubble(which is the only thing that looks bad in the game and stands out like an infected sore) and then a conversation with the NPC begins. I have heard GW2 been compared to SWTOR when it comes to conversations. Oh how surprised was I when I saw it in action. The voice acting is okay-ish at best, but the whole setup of it is awkward. Compare to SWTOR, the other MMO with voice-acting, the characters move around, interact with objects and each other while at the same time offering a dialogue tree to give a sense of control and to influence the outcome. Here the characters stand on the opposite side of the screen from one another, doing weird facial expressions while the other one is talking and if a third or fourth party wants to join in another character has to be swept aside. It reminds me of an upphotted version of the oldschool ways they used to handle dialogue in old JRPGs back in the day. But they didn't do it because it was the best way to tell a narrative, but because of the limitations of the tech they had. Well, technology marches on and we know we don't have to present dialogue in that way anymore. It's not bad because it's bad (it thrumps the wall of text any day in the week) but it's bad because I think they can do better.

They then go on to show us some of the combat of the game. The combat looks solid, but there is one thing that stands out to me. While the player, together with a bunch of other players and NPCs, fight a miniboss up on a snowy mountain, while the developer stress how much they want to make a game where you don't stand still pressing the same button every time... that seems to be exactly what they're doing (everyone except the player that is) and it works. In fact the boss is taken down in a heartbeat and the devloper says this is the fastest take down of this boss he's seen. The strategy of standing still and spamming attacks saves the day once again.

The last thing they show us of the demo is a dynamic event which seems to be, well events you can take part of if you wish, where you cooperate with other players to accomplish an objective and hopefully gain some currency to buy phatt loot later on. Seems kinda cool, but nothing to jump out of your throusers for.

So that's pretty much my impression and my question is how does that relate to your impression. Am i wrong? Is it something I'm missing about all of this? What are your thoughts?

No amount of bad rep, no video, no opinion, not a SINGLE THING is going to stop me from being REALLY excited about Guild Wars 2.

I usually try to not get anticipated about games, so I don't get disappointed when it comes out and (as is often the case) does't meet expectations. However I just can't not be excited about this game, I don't care how long it takes I just want to play it. Forever.

So to answer your question, our impressions oppose each other completely. =)

You need to keep in mind the 2 at the end of the game, alot of the backstory was explained in the original. If there's one thing ANet does well its storyline, everything will make sense in 8 hours of playtime.

Jumping in here (hopefully) before you get flamed to death, to say that was a well constructed post, as for me this really hasn't been on my radar so I cant comment, I've been pretty much burnt out on MMO's but I think its exactly that that has led to people being so zealous over new MMO releases.

They are desperate for something new, there are so many similar MMO's out there and so anything that seems to deviate, even slightly, from the "norm" suddenly attracts vast attention.

Now I'm by no means attacking a particular game or any particular players, and hey I hope for all of you your favorite or most looked forward too games turn out to be all that you wish them to be, this is just my opinion on why people seem to get so hyped about these new games (not to mention this isnt exactly isolated to MMO's but to continue down that thread of thought would derail things slightly)

Honestly, the no subscription thing, like the first Guild Wars makes this pretty much an instant buy for me. Granted, I haven't played a whole lot of the first game, but from what I've seen of Guild Wars 2, it looks fun. I generally don't go out of my way to research games before their release, as hype tends to ruin games for me, but what I've seen of this game looks really impressive.

Wow. THAT is the conversation system people have been telling me rivals TOR? That is pathetically bad. I also enjoy the blatant ripping off of TOR's Bounty Hunter story XD

(And no I do not care which game is released first, I heard of TOR's Great Hunt months ago and this is the first time I've heard it mentioned here.)

That guy isn't doing too well at public speaking either. It pains me every time he stutters and trips over a word. I'm eleven minutes in and will keep watching but so far it looks incredibly generic. Nothing special with the combat, and interacting with the environment to summon monsters is not even close to a new thing.

At the end of the day this is looking like your average fantasy MMO, I agree with everything in your post that has been showcased in the video so far OP. It so far also completely lacks the visual charm of the first Guild Wars.

It really is the second coming of MMOs. TOR has crappy animations and its star wars(with all the horrible outdated costume design and everything). Not even Bioware can make me like it.

I'm massively excited about this game. The biggest draw for me is going to be the PvP system.

What they have is World vs World vs World (WvWvW) PvP. A world being a server. Basically, every week, your server will be matched up against two other servers in a three way deathmatch, in the Mists. There will be keeps and sieges, controllable resources, things to fight over, etc. Basically, GW2's PvP is going to be the true spiritual successor to Dark Age of Camelot...and if you've ever played that, you know how stupidly awesome this all sounds.

There are a ton of other reasons to be excited for GW2, but WvWvW is the main one for me.

while i will probably get this game, just for the fact that it is no subscription, it isn't going to replace the money/time i'm probably going to be putting into TOR, so yeah it looks good, but nowhere near the level i'm getting from TOR

(probably also based on the fact the lore of the game isn't as interesting to me as the star wars lore set forth by bioware)

I think it looks pretty good...

... for a MMORPG.

Yeah. Not much more I can say. For me, this is one of those "just not my thing" cases. If this game were being made for me, it would hold no interest for the people it is currently being made for. Which is why it is not, and should not, be made for me.

The norn are a part barbarian part human race of hunters. They are in the original guild wars so its not really surprising that they dont explain much about them here given that its only a demo and alot of information is probably assumed from GW1. They are quite a bit bigger than normal humans, generally 7 to 8 feet tall.

As for my own opinion of GW2, I CAN'T FREAKING WAIT. I loved the original guild wars and have seen nothing but good things so far from GW2.

Yes, I realised that I'd probably not understand all the nuances and themes of the story from a short demo, but I hoped for something a little bit more substantial. I mean, even though it is a sequel they still have to cater to us who haven't played the first GW by explaining who these people are, what kind of a world is this and what's the conflict of the story. From what I could gather from the opening cinematic a 'norn' (still not sure what that is) goes out to... do adventures and find a place in history? Is it because of the dragon? Is that what this is all about? I don know.

Game developers have to explain to newcomers what the conflict of the game is if they expect them to be immersed. I'm not sure that 'it would make sense after 8 hours' would be enough.

This video is from about the same time as the reveal of TOR's Bounty Hunter demo. Just because you didn't hear of this before now doesn't make it a rip off.

Going to try to address a few things.
There is a lack of background info, but there is a lot of stuff from the previous game and the books that have been coming out that isn't explained in the demo.
EDIT: I'm sure there will be more in the actual game. The demo is really more to show off gameplay and such

As far as certain things not looking as good as they could, keep in mind, they're still changing the game and tweaking things. It could look different by the time the full game comes out.

The reason the dynamic events are exciting (at least to me) is that they replace quests. Based on what has been said during other conventions, there will be thousands of these things happening in the world all at once. I'm just looking forward to not getting text quests about some event and not seeing that event actually happening.

Oh thanks! :) the more you know!

Still are barbarians a race physically different from humans? that's a new one.

They're bigger, bulkier and can turn into a bear. The day you find a human that can turn into a bear is the day I call the Norn the same as humans. But its really just the culture, size and the bear thing that makes them different from humans as they look pretty similar. But the fact that the smallest Norn are taller than the tallest humans makes them pretty easy to differentiate between them.

Why is it the second coming of MMOs? I would assume it has more behind it than being better than SWTOR (in your opinion)?

It also seems to be happening a lot whenever the consoles and PC, Bioware and CD Projekt Red, Battlefield and COD, and now TOR and GW2 is mentioned within a single paragraph.

It's really sad how we want to divide the fanbases all the time as if we're too insecure to let the other go without bashing it.

I, on the other hand, think both TOR and GW2 has their strenghs and weaknesses and I'm excited for both.

A revolutionary thought for fanboys, isn't it?
