(And no I do not care which game is released first, I heard of TOR's Great Hunt months ago and this is the first time I've heard it mentioned here.)
This video is from about the same time as the reveal of TOR's Bounty Hunter demo. Just because you didn't hear of this before now doesn't make it a rip off.
While I cannot say if it was conceived at the same time, you are entirely wrong at least in the context of the above statement, as the Demo in the video above was from GDC 2011, while the first video mentioning the Great Hunt in TOR was released in September 2009.

There is a lack of background info, but there is a lot of stuff from the previous game and the books that have been coming out that isn't explained in the demo.
EDIT: I'm sure there will be more in the actual game. The demo is really more to show off gameplay and such
While your edit does explain that your stance and I am thus not necessarily speaking towards you in disagreement, I do hope that GW2 does not plan for me to have to read books and play the previous game just to know what is going on.

For an MMO this looks fucking awesome, compared to real games... it only hits the middle/bottom end.

I don't completely understand why the cinematics and game models diverge so greatly, don't tell me your designers didn't notice this shit doesn't fit together.

And I wonder how the combat is now that it went to a fully connected world, the old GW excelled at it because it was just your instance so precision timing and positioning were always spot on.

Speaking of the opening cinematic, it looks cool, but it doesn't explain a lot. For example, even though I would be playing as one if I played this demo, I have no idea what a norn is. From what I could gather they are humans, or some sort of human-esque race, who was chased away by some ice dragon and who appreciate the sport of hunting. That's pretty much it. I also don't know anything about the world or the place I start in. A little context would be nice.
The norn are a part barbarian part human race of hunters. They are in the original guild wars so its not really surprising that they dont explain much about them here given that its only a demo and alot of information is probably assumed from GW1. They are quite a bit bigger than normal humans, generally 7 to 8 feet tall.

As for my own opinion of GW2, I CAN'T FREAKING WAIT. I loved the original guild wars and have seen nothing but good things so far from GW2.
Oh thanks! :) the more you know!

Still are barbarians a race physically different from humans? that's a new one.
They're bigger, bulkier and can turn into a bear. The day you find a human that can turn into a bear is the day I call the Norn the same as humans. But its really just the culture, size and the bear thing that makes them different from humans as they look pretty similar. But the fact that the smallest Norn are taller than the tallest humans makes them pretty easy to differentiate between them.
Ok so let me get this straight. Barbarians are humans who are big and bulky and can turn into a bear, norns are barbarians who can't turn into a bear and humans are smaller versions of both of them without the bear thing? ... Why would anyone want to play human again :p

Was it? All I found on Google was a demo from 2011. My apologies if I am incorrect. Regardless, based on the Norn culture in the games, the idea makes sense for them.

As far as not having to read or play the previous game, I completely agree. The previous game and books are really just extra background for those who want to know about it and should have no impact on whether or not you can enjoy the second game. Same with Knights of the Old Republic and TOR.

Not quite =P. Norn are basically a larger, more barbaric human race that can turn into bears. There is not actual "barbarian" race.

EDIT: http://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/races/norn/ There's the bio if you're interested in reading it.

As far as i'm aware there are no squishy mages in the Norn so I imagine magic will draw people to the humans. Also i'm assuming that you mean for that "can" and "can't" to be the other way round. Norn's can turn into bears, normal barbarians cant. Also Norn's dont get the asistance of the Gods who in GW can be summoned in avatar form by kneeling at a statue to them.

As Gannadios, Guild Wars 2 is a sequel. If you play through Guild Wars Prophecies/Factions/Nightfall/Eye of the North, you'll come to understand much more about the game. For instance, the Norn you speak of are introduced in Eye of the North. You learn all about them, the Asura, and some about the Dwarves. Nothing can stop me from being super excited about this game. Not even the fact that I don't have a PC powerful enough to actually play it. When I have one, Guild Wars 2 will be mine the day I'm able to get it.

More the Norns dont believe in the Gods, although belief in guild wars probably doesnt mean the same in real life given that they probably accept that they exsist but care nothing for them.

Well, the game is far from release and the combat hasn't really been demonstrated very well thus far. What differentiates the combat from standard MMOs is that there is no auto-attack. You have to actively fight and block and stuff, the environment plays a role, and many abilities/spells, even those of different classes, work together to create another effect.
Everything that they're demoing is probably set to a very easy difficulty for that very purpose, and shouldn't be indicative of the final product.
The conversation system is rather bad compared to TOR, but it serves its purpose well enough. TOR is trying too hard to be a single-player RPG with MMO elements. GW2 is trying to be an MMO with some single-player RPG elements. The voice acting is meh, though, I agree.

All in all, I'm banking on GW2. I like fantasy MMOs, there's genuine gameplay innovation going on here, AND there's no subscription fee. What's not to like?
Naturally you should always keep in mind when watching trailers or demos that what they're showing isn't the finished product, but that's the only tangible thing I have to go on so... I take what I get :p

... and why showcase somthing that wouldn't be indicative of the final product? Seems counter-productive to me.

I dunno, I think the same thing about TOR. The people looking forward to it make it sound like the second coming. The more I read about it personally, the more convinced I am that I'm brushing it off. If I want a "good story", I'll play Baldur's Gate. I don't want to pay 15 dollars a month to have an amazing story with other people to bug me.

Really, the argument of "Second coming" can apply to any game that has fans following it. Personally, yeah, I'm excited for GW2. I loved the first game, and they are trying a lot of neat stuff with this one. I love the lore of the world, and the first game's apocalyptic beginning area was an amazing twist. I'll be rolling a Charr for sure, since I LOVED them in the first game.

They don't believe in them, not that they won't help, but more or less the norn don't ask. However, the great spirits (you know the ones in the fucking video) are their god, Bear gives strength, Leopard gives cunning, Wolf gives Loyalty(Team based boosts), Raven gives wits (lock-picking, and lying, that kinda stuff)

I'm really excited for it. I would not call it the second coming though, heh.

I like the ideas behind most of the design decisions, but I also recognise the limitations of those ideas. That doesn't stop me really looking forward to playing. They also have a fantastic aesthetic appeal, which if it's like the first, will be very well-optimised.

The only problem I've seen so far, is that I will waste most of my playtime initially, deciding between playing as a Norn, or a Charr.

Part one, regardless of how you feel, cause you clearly believe its ripping off the "Great Hunt" The Norn backstory and culture has been established since 2007, however you go about it, they aren't ripping off KotORO.

And to your second point. Alright, you can say that, as long as KotORO doesn't require me to have watched the movies and played the games to understand the game aswell. If you want to fully understand everything, especially a universe thats been building over the years, you need to experience certain things, and honestly thats only fair.

And how could I have possibly known that without playing through a massive chunk of Guild Wars? I played the first one, and even with all the time I devoted to it I still never got that far in.

That's not fair, that's extortion. It's like saying if I want to drive the newest Trailblazer I must first purchase and drive the previous three models. The experience should be self-contained enough that a newcomer shouldn't' have to touch any other materials to have a full grasp on what is going on and what the universe is like. And demo or not, so far the intro cinematic just isn't doing that. Let's be honest, how much are they really going to change in that sequence by the time of release? They'd need to add a whole lot to give you the whole picture.

If you can still combine classes like in the first game, then there is much to be excited about. Think Rift but actually *functional*.

I currently have a Monk/Assassin in Guild Wars 1. I hope that serves as an exciting example.
Pretty much the monk has a passive maintained enchant that boosts its melee damage (and anyone else's but it drains his mana), a signet that knocks people down, ranged cheap nuke, an ability that can only be used on a target that's on the floor, a move that restored mana and damages the target if enchanted and an unavoidable aoe melee attack that can be used more often than usual because you can use the 'move that can only be used on knocked down foes' to skip the queue of comboing-moves.

If in the sequal they maintain being able to be hybrid classes and have good functionality between the classes then GW2 will be the most sexy (hopefully sub-free) MMO to play alongside SWTOR/WoW.

As I've said earlier, while newcomers can't expect to understand all the nuances and themes of the story right of the bat, the game should early on explain to them what sort of a world they're in, how the people are and what the conflict is in order to create immersion.

I believe they (unfortunately) scrapped the secondary professions. But it will be subscription-free.

I am rather interested in GW2. The original did have a number of interesting ideas in it, and there seem to be a good few added in this one. No holy Tank/Healer/DPS MMO triad, for one - all characters are self-reliant. They have boasted about a number of interactions between different characters (elementalists' walls of fire setting friendly ranger arrows passing through on fire for one); not sure how well they'll keep up with those ideas, but I hope they will do well.

Both this and SWToR look pretty standard. Not really excited about either.
Though I'll prolly get GW2 if it gets cheaper because of the whole no subscription thing. Enjoyed the first one.
