I fully back anything that shows large corporations to be incompetant in handling the personal data of millions of people. So a few people can't play the latest tedious cash cow for a few hours...seems like a tiny price to pay if the consequence is that those people's valuable financial details become more secure. But as long as people defend the massive corporations from blame in making a system that isn't secure then those same corporations will continue to make millions from shoddy work.

I know, i know...it's the modern way...charge more, protect less.
Not sure how you could possibly support this. These goons from lizard squad attack any large online gaming service. Its not a couple of people it affects millions of people. Its not a huge deal in the scope of peoples lives but it doesn't change the fact that its irritating as fuck and extreamly arrogant. Going by your logic in order to improve the police force we must attack people indiscriminately so that they step up public security. Its not a public service its an act of vandalism.
The police often change equipment and tactics when a new situation arises that they aren't easily able to overcome so i'm not sure the analogy works.

For my own part i've been one of those millions of people who have used the service but even when i did i never left my card details attached to my profile because i knew full well that they wouldn't be safe in microsoft's hands. Everybody said i was paranoid until 2 of my friends got their accounts hacked and their bank accounts were cleared as a result.

You need to understand that until it costs Microsoft more to ignore it than it than it does to fix it you wont get a service worth shit. If a few hours/days of no multiplayer gaming is the cost to improve the service and protect you then you should be happy but of course you need to get past the knee-jerk "what about me?" reaction first (we all get that when something annoying happens to us so don't take it as a personal attack).

To the guy who got a warning: It's funny, you went for a direct attack anonymously which seems strikingly like what hackers do when they take down systems...the irony is palpable :p

At some point this topic seems to have made a ddos attack synonymous with a real attack which puts secure data at risk.

Thats a leap in logic?

I mean I understand the points some of you are making about convenience being sacrificed short term in order for a better long term online environment...

That said, Lizard Squad runs ddos attacks. They're not particularly complex, and difficult to defend against. They have no stance on anything, and just like to cause trouble for the sake of causing trouble.

And the Lizard Squad fuckers just did it again... the connectivity problems from the last attack didn't get totally ironed out until two nights ago and now it's all back to square one.

I'm getting really sick of this. :( Another night unable to play anything.

I have no stance on the issue but what really amazes me in most of the above topics is that hackers are blamed for MS not being able to provide services to their customers. Arent you - the customer suppose to receive service from the provider MS that is a binding agreement you give them money they give you service.

If MS cant handle security and/or whatever else is needed to provide the service you have paid for they are the only one to blame not hackers, god, circumstance, bad luck, bad weather or whatever.

Stuff like this reminds me of IRA members blowing up non-military targets. It's not like you're really striking a blow against your enemy, you're just pissing off people who would otherwise be on your side.

DDOS attacks are extremely difficult to defend against because there isn't really any away to tell the difference between a DDOS attack and 'legit' traffic. I think Microsoft is a shitty company, but holding them accountable for what Lizard Squad and grounds like them are doing is victim blaming.

but the problem with what you've said is that this exposes no security flaws. this isn't like the well executed PSN hack, this is a simple DDOS attack.
Tippy made a blanket statement. The response addresses how that blanket statement fails.

Could be worse. My internet's been going down like Uplay because of storms in the area. I don't even have a chance to get mad at Lizard Squad, really.

Unless....

Those bastards! They stole Obama's weather control satellites!

the only thing they will achieve is pissing off millions of people, getting caught and spending a few years in prison not to mention giving ammuntion to the "the internet needs better regulation and more monitoring" crowd

If they want me to consider them anything more then a group of 12 year old children that have learned to use tools created by other people, they might want to consider actually demonstrating the vulnerabilities they are talking about instead of just bringing down the service. I am still irked at Sony about how their security was so easily breached on multiple occasions, but attacks like this I am more frustrated with the attackers because they aren't demonstrating anything aside from they know how to click a few buttons and overload network traffic.

I've never seen what this actually accomplishes except make people's lives miserable and frustrating, both the guys who work in network security and the people who pay for XBL.
On the subject of security, there's never going to be perfection, the larger something is the more weak points it will have. Thats just basic physics translated into data streams. And people who seem to have no goal other than to ruin someone's day, no matter who it is, are despicable folks in general.
Like I said, don't see a point and don't support this kind of shit.

Well, it seems, according to my attempts to get on to PSN and the Express newspaper as well as a few other sites

http://www.craveonline.co.uk/gaming/articles/797477-psn-taken-major-ddos-attack-lizard-squad

that these 'hackers' have now also hit the PSN network. These folk call themselves, and my god it would be funny if the name wasn't so ragingly pathetic, but get this they call themselves 'Lizard Squad'.

I am not sure what the stance of a group like this is, obviously being basement dwelling losers is the first and most logical port of call but you know what I just spent a weekend busting my balls at work all I wanted to do is come home chill then go online and play a wee bit of GTA Online, I can't do that because 'Loser squad' has decided to 'hack', if you can call DDosing hacking, I couldn't give a fuck what their actually agenda is, like these losers have any agenda beyond the massive internal community circle jerk they will give each other for bringing PSN and XBL down.

Their attack on PSN also locked thousands of gamers out of getting their free games for the 20th Playstation Anniversary event.

There is no noble intent behind these random attacks. The only people they screw over are us, the gamers. Loser Squad does it for shits and giggles, and flips you the finger while doing it... especially when you come out in support of them. I'm sure they get at kick out of that!

Every time north Korea communicates with the outside world this is an immediate dilemma: is it okay to laugh at an evil and stupid regime if it so evil and stupid that it is indistinguishable from parody?
