Over the past two years or so, I've noticed my hangovers getting worse. I'm not sure if this is due to age (I'm not old, but have been drinking for a fair few years now) or what. It could even just be down to changing choice of beverage over the years, but I don't really think this is the cause.

Anyway, I've realised I don't really have anything I do to help my hangover. I'm aware that people must have been looking for a real cure for centuries, and none exist, but I know some people do have ways to perk themselves up after a heavy night on the lash.

I was just wondering what you consider your hangover cure, and just to add to the discussion value, how did you discover it?

The only hangover cures I've heard of scientifically are water and bread. Water hydrates you, and I forgot what the hell bread did. You'll probably want to look that up on your own some more, I saw it a while back...

I stay at a friends place near a beach for the summer. One day I had a real bad hangover on White wine. *Now that is a bad hangover* I found jumping into the water at the beach and going for a bit of a swim to help very much.

Puking is another great way to feel better faster. Although most hangovers you just have to put up with. I never drink to heavy if I know I have to do something the next day. So if I am hungover in a bad way, I can just curl in a ball up on a couch and watch TV in the morning.

..or just try to sleep it off. So I can't really say I have a cure, just ways to make me feel better. I don't usually get too bad of a hangover as I am pretty alchohol tolerant, but when I do, I just shut off for awhile and shuffle around the flat moaning, when I am not in a ball or over a bag.

*Yeah like the dude above me said, water and bread are great, but they only work if you eat the bread and drink the water BEFORE you get a hangover. The bread is supposed to soak up the alchohol. So it is good to hydrate and eat some bread before bed if you think you might have a hangover in the morn. Another pre-hangover cure is walking, go for a long walk around the block, you'll feel better in the morning because of it. That is why I like to walk home from the bar if I drink a lot.

only thing you can do for a hangover is wait it out. I suggest sleep, and water, and more sleep. Also, the bread thing is an old wive's tale and does nothing for a hangover.

I don't really think there are any proper cures, but the best thing I've ever found is to neck as much water as you can before you go to bed and leave a full glass on your bedside table, then stick to cold drinks for the rest of the next day. And even if you're really hungry, don't eat anything if you think you might be sick. I find that if I force myself to eat then I'll throw it back up straight away and still be hungry. And I've just been sick.

The best cure has always been an isotonic solution through an IV drip. But I'm guessing you want more do-it-yourself solutions.
Fatty food generally helps spread out the absorption of alcohol into your blood over a longer time. And sports drinks are in some way IV solutions for oral use.

Thanks for the replies haha. I know drinking water before bed is a great way to prevent a hangover by keeping your body hydrated, but unfortunately it's hard to remember to do that when smashed.

I remember reading a while ago that bacon is fantastic for a hangover, because of the fat and salt. I can't remember why, but they're supposed to help, and it's nice to believe bacon has a real use.

A real problem when I'm hungover is that I'll wake up, drink the water I have left over from the night before, and then spend hours desperately thirsty and making it worse because I feel too terrible to get out of bed and pour a glass of water.

I guess the real solution would be to drink less...

Rubbish. The real solution is to take steps to ensure you never fall back into the depths of depravity known widely as sobriety. So, invest a set of tumblers, fill them with various types of alcohol for variety's sake and leave them around the house, some obvious and some hidden in the places that seem obvious to look when you're drunk.

Also, a good drink of water before bed, and a full glass by your bed for when you wake up in the night or the morning with a dry mouth help immensely. Fry-ups and bread are the best choice for breakfast. There's probably sciencey reasons behind it, but I don't know them. I just speak from experience.

Thank god you've come to show me the error of my ways! I shall heed your advice immediately.

hangovers are usually caused by dehydration
make every second drink a glass of water and try to have a relatively healthy meal and you should minimize the effects the next day but always bear in mind alcohol is a poison so the day after is never gonna be great

What I do is before I go to sleep I eat a sandwich with some sort of meet in it and an big glass of milk. A bottle of water is by the bed for the mid night wake ups.

Drink water while you drink alcohol. And not just one big jug of water after 12 beers. Try to drink a little water in between every drink. Get lots of sleep, and don't get too drunk.
Bad advice: For me, drinking more often softens each individual hangover. Get drunk once a month: Epic hangovers. Get drunk 1-2 times a week, feel almost fine when waking up. In a ditch. With your ex. Who has since become a man.

The best cure is to drink more alcohol when you wake up.

Trust me I'm a scientist.

like the other pros in this thread, just make sure to drink enough water to offset the alcohol while you're drinking. you won't even have to bother with a hangover. i stick to a 1:1 ratio, but most people i've heard do 1:2 so 1 part water for every 2 parts alcohol.

The one hangover remedy that I know works is a good English breakfast. But since this isn't England the closest representation of that would a heavy Southern breakfast with the works. Biscuits and gravy, hash browns, eggs, etc. Just something with LOTS of grease.

NOTE: I didn't say that it was going to be healthy.

I take some anti-hungover pills I got. They're called "Bakis", which is Swedish slang for hungover, and work like a miracle. If I'm all out of those I grab a Resorb instead. They help a lot, but are not as great as Bakis. Not sure if Resorb is the English name... it's diarrea pills though. Restores the bodys fluid and salt levels!

Don't take one before you drink though, if you read this and plan on trying. Did that the first time and it was hard to get drunk.

I only know what my Korean friends do. Protein (eggs) and water mixed with honey.

Korea is known as Irish of the East, so I say its a solid advice.
