to be honest I am surprised about the lack of threads on what has been happening in Haiti, now unless you have been hiding under a rock Haiti (known as the poorest country in the western Hemisphere) was ROCKED with a 7.0 Earthquake that basically demolished the whole Port Capital of Port Au Prince with estimates of 100,000 people killed and much more buried away in rubble, because they are such a poor country they could not supply proper relief efforts or hospitals for the wounded and their buildings could not survive a 7.0 quake.

what are your opinions and feelings on this?

now I know that this goes against regulation and all that but given the circumstances I feel that IF you wanted to make a donation for Relief, go to HUFH.org which is run by Haitian Jimmy-Jean Louis who is on Hero's. and it links to red cross and other stuff, anyways Opinions??

Me too. I'm not saying it's not important, just that world-disasters and relief-efforts news isn't something I really spend much time with or look into.

Also I'm a not an overly good person, so most things cause related can go do whatever as long as they don't need me to do things for them, or spending time looking into them/attempting to care much.

Thanks for the relief info, Jenkins.

I already know people going to help there from my church and I may be joining them soon.

Despite all the turmoil, Haiti was still a wonderful place with a very open, and resilient people. One could easily see the where artists like Abelard drew their inspiration from.

Tragic.

That place gets rocked by nature all the time. Poor people need to move their country somewhere else :/

I heard about it. My curiosity had me look up the numbers but I really don't care that much.

I have some friends there on a church mission, well they were on a church mission. Now I'm not sure what they're doing, apart from the fact that they're still fine.

I can't say I thought of Haiti much before this, and apart from that little tidbit I just presented, I still don't. It seems terrible, but I can't relate to anything like that, maybe more people need to help, but it's probably not my place to say.

Agreed, when you have a revolution and drive out/kill the educated people cultural revolution style it's not surprising the place winds up being shit. "Why are our crops failing, does anybody remember how to use crop rotation?"

It doesn't matter, the US will spend a butt load of money on relief for Haiti and my streets still wont be plowed in time for work.

as long as you all don't have a problem with people from other countries feeling completely apathetic about the loss of life on, say, Bloody Sunday (Demented Teddy), or QLF bombings (Rhade and Fan of Death), or 9/11 (WhiteRat07)

It's a bloody, bloody mess. Reading today about people pulling themselves out of the rubble or a two year old found under her father's corpse. A fucked up situation. My prayers are with the families of the victims.

Thanks for the donation info.

Agreed. In my case my response to disaster is about the same whether it's a world away or within driving distance. If it was next door, like the earth falling out, I'd imagine my view might be different, but that's probably because I'd be part of it so the angle is all different. But no, I wouldn't pull a more local happening and pay it more attention than something like this.

Things happen everywhere.

You are deeply mistaken.
I wouldn't expect other people to feel sorry for me any more then others should expect me to feel sorry for other nations.

Wasn't trying to change anybody's mind, just trying to get a feel for the thinking behind it, which is apparently "nobody should care about anybody." I don't necessarily have a problem with that; just wanted to be clear.

It's horrible, and I wouldn't wish it to happen to anyone, but, while I wish the country well, it hasn't made a great impact on my life. I've just donated some cash to help and that's about it, because that's all I can do. I don't expect my donation to do a great deal, but it was equally a donation out of placation as well as a donation out of pity.

Overall, I tend not to think about it.
