Hakers. Why?

So a bit of explanation. I play mabinogi, a korean MMO developed by Devcat and published by Nexon. The user base is, for the most part, nice and respectful. However the past few weeks I have played have tried everyones patience. Hackers have been tearing into the game.

Sure there have always been a few in the player base however their actions have been relatively minor or didn't affect anyone else. However now they are gaining GM abilities like a hide feature, the ability to attack characters without requesting a PVP match, and rumors have surfaced of a hacker gaining the ability to permaban players. While worrying these are all relatively small scale and don't affect much of the player base. Yesterday however they hit and hit hard... They killed the NPC's.

I'm not exactly sure how they managed it but they found a way to kill almost every single NPC. I'm not sure if they were able to just make the NPC's targetable then kill them all by hand or if they just made them all drop dead at the same time.

While the change in gameplay for my friends and I has been negligible, due to the nature of the game we can more or less replicate all the missing services, they just screwed over anyone trying to start the game over this weekend and most low to mid level players who use the NPC's to buy and sell weapons, potions, and other goods.

I just don't understand why they felt they needed to do this. Sure Nexon and Devcat are both rather lax in support for the game, but its a F2P game that isn't Pay to Win, they (especially Devcat) don't have the cash or resources of larger companies and the last thing they need is to pick up the pieces the hackers are leaving behind.

So how about you. Any stories about what have hackers done to you? Did they ruin a game you enjoyed, hack your compter or accounts, ect?

I found this to be more pleasant than I thought, though you did spell 'Hacker' wrong in your title.

For me, Call of Duty:WaW has been ravaged by hacking.

People on the servers fly around the map, with bottomless clips, invincibility and veriouse other perks, that come from hacking. It's not just me ranting about losing, actual messages pop up under the radar, advertising for 'Free infections'.

I don't run into hackers too much actually. I don't play MW or BF all that much.

Only time I've ever hacked was on single player games, Diablo 2 and its Hero Editor.

As for why, they do it because they get to feel powerful and important. I'm sure there's even some people who suck up to them to get items and shit which I'm sure feeds their egos even more.

Plus seeing yourself on CoD or BF going 100:0 K:D ratio makes you feel uber.

Back when i played MW2 there was a huge rush of ppl who bought mods and were selling stuff like 10th lobbies, aimbots, and permanet uavs. Then there were those who had their advertisements about infections and watch my stream bitches on the who killed who box. The majority of the ppl who did it there was to make people shell out money so they wouldnt be raped harder. Or to look good.

My Steam account once got hijacked by some guy (probably Russian, since all of the new, unknown friends in my list were Russian).

My account hadn't been in use for quite a while. I probably would have never noticed if I didn't go on-line one day so I could activate the PC version of Portal 2 that came with my PS3 version and give that to a friend, so we could play the co-op without him needing to buy his own copy. Then I noticed I couldn't log in anymore.

Luckily I was able to get it back easily enough. It took a little effort to prove my ownership of the account to Steam Support. But once done, they swiftly returned my account to me without any further hassle. Really, I was honestly surprised at how fast and worry-free my problem was solved. I was half expecting it to be a frustrating and protracted process. I wrote the guy who handled my case a nice thank you note out of appreciation. I hope he appreciated it too.

Best of all is that the guy apparently used my account to buy several games (not using my credit card, mind you), including Red Orchestra 2, CoD 4 and Modern Warfare 2. Those are now mine. None of them really pique my interest, but it does give me a strange sense of satisfaction knowing that that is the price he had to pay for hijacking my account.

So that's my story. Nothing the world will tremble for, but still, there is a sizeable amount of my money invested into that account, so learning some jackass hijacked it really pissed me off.

A Nexon game without hackers is like a fat kid without his cake.

Yet also since I also played Nexon titles in the past I do see that they're fucking bullshit at times. Let me use DFO as a example of why some will hack. The Drop rates are LOW for all those that aren't allowed into test servers. The Auction House economy is hellish with some seriously overpriced items. Then the whole random avatars pieces pretty much force money and item hacking because the avatars buffs pretty much can change the scope of a character. It can make PVE and PVP so much easier with really good avatars.

My experience with Combat Arms is a tale of hackers (more liek script kiddies.)

So yes, I've dealt with being OPK'd to the death (killed from one location), ghosted to death (killed by invisible players), aimbotted like hell to death, & many more. So I'm more than familiar with hackers & the assfuckery they bring to any game. Did I mention hacks that have crashed entire games before?

CoD4 too. It's pretty much unplayable on consoles. It blows my fucking mind that consoles have worse hacking than PC does.

I miss the good old days of Call of Duty:WaW without the hacking. It was one of the rare enjoyable CoD and had online story co-op.

This was a very big seller to me, and is a reason it is my favorite CoD. As well the split-screen co-op for local consoles. Though the actual splitting of the screen was odd, leaving very large portions of the screen unused, though this is not the thread for such discussions.

Hackers probably just receive satisfaction knowing that they changed something that wasn't meant to be tampered with. I've seen some occasional hackage in TF2, mostly with Engineers building more sentries that they should be capable of.

TF2 is pretty good for the low number of hackers. Once they get discovered they get VACced pretty quickly.

Does it though? If you did nothing to earn that K:D in CoD does it count in any way? No-one who matters cares about K:D in BF W:L is more important (Both of mine are woeful). I don't understand aimbots, wall hacks, or the like.

I can understand hacking to be a griefer though, because some people are just dicks. It is the way of the world.

You should play the single player campaign of CoD4, it won't take you long and it is enjoyable for what it is. If you aren't into milsims I'd skip Red Orchestra.

Ah mabinogi I used to play that stopped shortly after elfs and giants were released
nexon doesnt really have a good handle on stopping cheaters or at least they didnt when i played
i quit becuse of that with rampant bots and the paladin incendent enough was enough

My favorite hacker encounter was on L4D some moron speed hacked and was probably intent on causing the hord to murder everyone right off the bat by setting off all the car alarms on the level (have had hackers do this to me several times) but instead aggroed a tank and got killed in 10 seconds flat XD
