Half-Life 1 is 11 years old, you haven't heard of it because you're young? Half-Life was awesome, I loved every minute of it, and when HL2 was announced and we saw what it looked like, it was the most realistic game ever conceived by man.
I'm 15 and Half Life 1 is one of my favorite games of all time, age shouldn't matter when it comes to games.
You're probably one of the few 15 year old's that have played it. Kids these days are into their DS's and PSP's.
I'm gonna call Bullshit on that, I'm 15 and I've played all of the classics (Minus HL1:BLUE SHIFT)

A true gamer wouldn't be ignorant to the classics dammit! :)

Case in point. You are one of the few who've played old school Half-Life. This is a gaming forum so I'm not surprised that the 15 year old's are coming out of the woodwork to call me out on that.

I work in a gaming store and any kid aged 15 doesn't even go anywhere close to the PC section, let alone Half-Life. It's all about consoles these days, and most kids wouldn't appreciate the original Half-Life because of it's graphics anyways.

If Doom was the Buddy Holly of games Half Life would be The Beatles.

Wow, that's the most pretentious thing I've ever said.

these days, i hear a lot about Half Life 2.
That would probably largely be because this site is full of people who hate Halo, and Half-Life 2 is the first game they recommend Halo fans play instead. Because the protagonist has more personality and talks more, the driving sequences don't suck, and there are no annoying physics puzzles.

Wait...

(not bashing HL2, just pointing out a strange phenomenon)

It's a shame the classics are going to be forgotten so fast.
Then again, it's eleven years old now. I guess eleven years from now, today's games aren't going to be talked about much.

but 1 thing i've noticed is, i've never really heard anyone ever talk about Halflife 1. i mean, if there is a 2, there must have been a 1. but nobody seems to talk about it, and no game stores i've checked have it.
what was it? why is it that it has been forgotten?
I get where you're coming from. I'm 16 and until a few months ago hadn't really heard that much about it. I'd heard it mentioned once or twice, but I didn't really know what it was. I figured it was like fallout 1+2 (as in games that had modern sequels and old/obscure prequels). I eventually bought it on steam. Here is my honest impression, being in modern times and having played the sequel: It's fun. Light on story (for these times), but fun. Unlike HL2, you don't have to know anything about what's going on. If you immediately kill any scientist you see(they give you a small amount of exposition), then you will be very confused. This is the really innovative thing about it, I suppose: no cutscenes to take you out of the experience, you know what the character knows, and it's extremely immersive. The graphics are dated, but not bad. Overall, it's a great game. It's different from its sequel in many respects, but definitely worth a look, if only to know the history of gaming.

You'll play it, and it will sound like old-school CS.

And you will be mildly frightened sometimes.

And it will have next to nothing to do with HL2, but you'll suddenly realise what some of the HL2 details mean!

It is up there with DOOM and Wolfenstein as one of the most influential PC FPSs ever made. Now, I want you to open up your Steam client, and go to the Steam Store, and Buy either Half Life, or Half Life: Source (Source is a port to the same engine as HL2, but the difference is not huge)

It is a must-play.
Get it.
Get it now.

Or I will send Lamaar after you in your sleep.
Lamaar's been debeaked, he will hump his head in vain...

Most PC gamers use Steam. You can see my opinion on this here. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.153005]
Well, I'm almost 16, and my brother's computer got a shot full of orange box, so I've been playing that for the last year, also HL1.

You claim someone is a troll because they ask a perfectly valid question.
But its not a perfectly valid question is it? 4 pages of posters so far share relatively the same opinion and all agree its such an odd question to ask. Therefore coming onto a gaming community forum and asking such a question when, like I said, he could have googled the answer seems like such a trollish action. Theres been a lot worse posted opinions than mine and I dont see any of them earning your wrath! :p

What? Last month I finished it on my PC with an old copy of the game, I guess I must be lucky, or whatever.
Well, maybe they changed it, my XP is still on service pack 1. I just wouldn't recommend it after my experience. I've never tried installing it on my laptop, no reason to when it's already on my steam account.
You don't need to buy it again; you can register the physical copy you have with Steam and then download it... that's what I did and I got a free copy of Blue Shift (I only registered a Half-Life and Opposing Force double-pack).

Am I the only one that didn't follow the story in HL1 at all?

When I played it I just kind of shot shit until the game ended.

Then again I'm 21...which means I must have played it a while after it came out. Since I can actually remember playing it :p.

That's because today's games are largely shit.

Much like today's music.

But I digress. I doubt games from the 90's will ever be forgotten. They'll just keep popping back up like herpes for oh so many football players.
