As some of you may know recently steam started to support mods for HL2. On the whole valve is pretty good about supporting its modding community so some of them are downloadable directly from steam. Well seeing this as an opportunity I downloaded Age Of Chivalry.(AoC) A fairly decent and addictive game based around first person medieval warfare. Also I am currently downloading Zombie Panic.

I would like to hear about any other decent mods out there as I am going to start downloading HL2 mods and compile a list of: Good and Bad

After I have compiled this list I will post it on the escapist so please recommend.

I'm pretty sure they've been offering HL2 mods for a while.

Yes but most of them you could not download from the steam server or at least that's what the update thingy said. (it was a couple weeks ago or months...)

Not officially, no. While a couple of mods have gone onto retail via Valve (the most famous one being Counterstrike) this is the first time I can think of where Valve have offered mods that are still very community based for download via steam instead of another installer supplied by the mod's devteam.

I have been playing zombie panic for a good few months. <3

Oh.... that's what you meant. Yeah, I've been playing Dystopia, that's pretty good, and Troy: Divine Playgrond Beta, but I'm normally the only person on the server so it's just me vs. a ton of bots. I haven't been on Steam in a long while.

I should DL Zombie Panic.

For a big ass list o Mods, I reconmend ModDB (google it), you find alot of little gems you wouldn't usually. For example, Project Valkyrie, which is pretty much a Metroid Prime mod in everything but name so they can't get sued. It's pretty polished, I think they need to refine the gameplay personally but thats just me.

Oh, so it's not just me who logged onto his Steam account one day and found out I had a huge list of mods on my account.

Holy crap, just now noticing that myself.

Oddly enough it offers Age of Chivalry, but I already have it installed.

There's one called The Battlegrounds about the American Revolution. It's fairly modest in scope, but also fairly awesome. You can play as the British or Americans. Each side has 3 character classes. The weapons are muskets, bayonets, pistols, swords, and Bowie knives, and different for each team. Reload times vary depending on the weapon, but are usually about 4-7 seconds. The muskets have varying degrees of accuracy, but the sights are dynamic. So, true to history, the guns aren't accurate, but you will always know exactly how inaccurate they will be. Each map has flags which serve as objectives. There are maps of all shapes and sizes. My favorite is a large wooden fort manned by the Americans, which the British must storm through the trenches.

Tip- Unless you are using a pistol: do not begin reloading unless you are sure you can finish before being bayoneted!

My two personal favorites are SourceForts (which is not too popular anymore, but its basically lego building with guns) and Insurgency (which Im sure you have heard about by now). And Rooster I agree, Battlegrounds is the shit. Its so different than most fps offerings with automatic rifles and grenades, try a bayonett and a single shot muzzle loading rifle on for size!

Age of Chiv is also dependent on no lag, otherwise the combat is completly hit or miss- literally. Combat becomes completly random.

Does Garry's Mod count? I think i've wasted over 10 full days worth of time on that.
Okay, it DOES cost $10 bucks, but if we are only posting free ones on here, then its Age of Chivalry for me.

Love it to bits.

Think I've played hidden, fun concept but wondering around waiting to get killed by something invisible requires alot of teamwork and attention to your monitor ( meaning you can't relax and drink a cup of coffee while playing )

I also recall playing something with zombies, don't know if it's panic. You started out in a garage with zombie hands and had to kill a cop.. really buggy at the time, how is it now?

Sourceforts was fun for a while, but they never changed the default hl2 weapons and imo it got overly complicated. Meaning instead of building blocks and an empty map, you had premade fortresses with just a few blocks. Not to mention the griefers ( people constantly stealing your blocks ).

Does anybody remember the name of the future dictator mp mod? One side had tanks and rts soldiers to command. The other side played rebels forced to repell them, was really fun and well thought out but a little laggy and low on players.

There are alot of heavy wip mods out there for hl2 atm, but not many great mods that play without lag and have some players ( except for battlegrounds ).
If you're interested in sp though, I really recommend playing Minerva: http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/MINERVA
And I'm assuming I'm not the only one eagerly awaiting black mesa source: http://www.blackmesasource.com/ but that one will be a while before it's released.

I only play Single Player mods, which often don't even change the original game, only add to it(The "S" in the following stands for "Super"):

SMOD 40 [http://accept.hopto.org/smod/phpbb3/download/file.php?id=247] - Bullet Time, new weapons and friendly fire. It doesn't change the game itself, but makes it more interesting by adding stronger enemies, it's also the base for every other SMOD version, but not required.

SMOD Outbreak [http://www.moddb.com/mods/smod-outbreak/downloads] - First half is packed with zombies, other enemies are increased and just about everything has a new skin, second half has an increased difficulty because of the limited(and powerful) weapon selection.

CSS Sci-Fi [http://www.moddb.com/mods/css-sci-fi] - CSS maps in SMOD, also the only one I know of that actually changes the levels, interesting gameplay but I completed it once and stopped playing.

To go away from the SMODs:

Korin Mod - Not going to link to it, it's not for younger users, or those offended by the bathing suits worn by women.(It's not as revealing as I know some of them are, but I also know there are people that are offended by an exposed female leg)

Minerva [http://www.moddb.com/mods/minerva/downloads] - I last played it a year ago, but I liked it, and that's all I can say about it.

I played Dystopia and was waiting for Caliber Mod but it seems some mods might take forever to come out. Well.. GOOD mods...

I heard Natural Selection (old HL mod) was making a source version.. that looked promising.

Seconded. I'm amazed they haven't added this already, what with the mod maker actually being hired by Valve. Possibly the best single player mod out there, and highly recommended.

Zombie Panic: Source is the shit. It got me away from every other game I play for the past two weeks. I did another all nighter on it last night. I actually feel like I'm getting a lot better at it, from when I first started i used maybe get 3 pts before the maps changed, now I'm usually in the top 3. Zombies still win waay to often, but it only makes it more accomplishing when Surivors do get the win.
